Exciting installment!!

After reading This Is Not a Test last year, I was highly anticipating this sequel.I loved the fact that we got to be inside of Rhys' head this time rather than Sloane. No offense to Sloane, but after a while, her "wanting to die" narrative got to be too much. Rhys's point of view was refreshing, and we got to see another avenue of this story.

In this book, the two are basically on the run the entire time. They are not safe behind walls or locked doors but are outdoors trying to make their way toward safety despite the fact that there are zombies all around them. They end up being separated, and this is where things begin to really get interesting, as Rhys meets a man, his wife and small child.

I liked the introduction of these new characters very much. I think it pulled Rhys and Sloane more into the world around them, rather than them being an us against the zombies. Choices are made, fights are necessary, people are in major danger, up close and personal, which I thought added a lot more to this sequel than the first book had. And there is some heartbreak in this book that upped the emotional factor for me.

The ending was interesting. Yes, it's a cliffhanger, and it's done in such a way that it was kind of eerie, where you're meant to puzzle over what this could possibly mean.

Courtney Summers is once again showing off her wonderful storytelling ability with great characters, excellent characterization, emotion, and pacing. I really liked this installment to the story and I'm looking forward to the third book.

Please Remain Calm satisfied by zombie fix on so many levels.

Please Remain Calm is told in Rhys perspective and picks up right where This is Not a Test ended. He and Sloane are escaping and heading toward a safety. They have his Dad’s car and a crowbar.

Summers knows how to build suspense and deliver a tale and quickly drew me in. Narrow escapes, panic and deadly twists will have you holding your breath. I liked getting Rhys perspective and when he and Sloane are separated, I feared the worse. Summers’ introduces new characters and despite being only ninety-six pages, she managed to flesh them out and have me invested. There were moments that had me cringing, crying and sitting staring at the pagees slacked jawed.

The zombies and danger at every turn had my heart racing. The tale managed to pull at my heartstrings too as I became attached. Do not become attached! Summers’ manages to give me one heck of a ride every time we get together. The ending made me scream. *I mean out loud- the kind that makes my hubby come running to see if I am OK.* Yes it wrapped up, but OMG. I want more. I loved it and hated it, I really did. Fans of Mira Grant will love the This is Not a Test series. full review at caffeinated book reviewer.

Amazingly suspenseful conclusion - Courtney Summers is amazing!!

This book was more of a novella; it's only 100 pages. But in those 100 pages, Courtney Summers has ripped out my heart and torn it to shreds with absolutely no remorse. Don't listen to the title; there is no calm in this book. There is just tragedy and endless danger and heartbreak. This book is actually told from the POV of Rhys. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but I grew to love him. He and Sloane are trying to make it to a safe haven when they get separated. This boy has so much resilience and determination and yet, he is still at heart a teenage boy. Honestly though, I am not sure I would have the same determination to survive that he does. There is way more zombie action in this book and some of it is gruesome. Actually, much of it is gruesome. Think of it as a book version of The Walking Dead. And just like The Walking Dead, no one is safe. No one. And that ending . . . . WHY?!? That ending was tragic!!! I am pretty sure there will be no sequel to this one and that is just as tragic. Who knew that Courtney Summers could write an apocalypse novel that is just as good as her contemporary stuff?

Great book, balances concepts and details very nicely

Anybody interested in reducing manufacturing cycle times should read this book (among others) to get some great examples of what can be done. It has many very specific examples and strong fundamental concepts. Very easy to read as well.

This is THE book for hands-on actual implementation of lean production techniques. This book answers the difficult problems accompaning implementation of the Toyota Production System. It is written in an easily understood straight-forward style. In my opinion this is the best book on boosting shopfloor efficiency. It does not shy away from discussing the problem areas. The author proves he has "been there and done it". An example is the Kanban system usually described in most books as a sytem where cards control the shop floor work flow. This book describes in detail various Kanban systems to handle the situations where the work flow is interrupted by processes requiring outside vendors or where an operation such as heat treating will slow the process. I rated this book five stars because it discusses real problems and solutions.

The book covers the basic concepts often associated with Toyota Production System. Suzaki takes it one step farther by adding his own creativity and experiences as a lean manufacturing consultant. Having just started on a Gestalt training myself, I found this book to be an easy read and also very informative about Gestalt principles.

I would have liked to give it a 5 star rating but didn't have anything else to compare it to as it's the first Gestalt book I have read so far.

Definately recommend it to Gestalt fledglings like me!

Clarkson's writing is appropriate to present time. The straightforwardness and depth of her writing is true to transcendence, and the core of Gestalt therapy, in philosophy and practice. Balanced and egalitarian, this book is a good example of writing that integrates masculine and feminine energies.

Dr. Andrew Lockie, M.B., Ch.B., MRCGP, M.F. Hom., Dip. Obst. RCOG, is a qualified homeopathic physician and a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Faculty of Homeopathy. He has practiced as a homeopathic physician for the past 22 years and was a founding member of and teacher at the Homeopathic Physicians Teaching Group in Oxford, where homeopathy is taught to doctors and other health professionals. This is an excellent read with true healing benifits.

This is a great book to own if you want to learn and heal with homeopathic medicine. The secret to homeopathic remedies success is "the laws of similar" like cures like.

* Homeopathy is Gentle and Powerful

*Homeopathy does not wage war on disease and seek to destroy the symptoms of disease through brute force.

*It does not bring substances into the body as is done with allopathic drugs, for the purpose of doing hand to hand combat against disease. Instead, homeopathy and its remedies are intended to gently stimulate and strengthen the body so that it can overcome illness through its own vital force and strength.

*Homeopathic remedies restore the natural ability of the body to defend itself against illness and to heal itself. When this happens, a person is truly cured of what ails him.

I think anybody that wants to learn and heal with homeopathic medicine should own this book. 5 stars all the way.

Interesting read

I was turned on to homeopathy recently, as I am continually searching for natural remedies for ailments and allergies... and just regular "human maintenance". I purchased this book, and while I am glad I did... I wouldn't personally recommend it to anyone.
The book is full of information and does a good job of explaining Homeopathy. It is filled with color and images and examples... you won't run out of things to read or get bored reading it.
My problem is... I could not figure out the chart tests! And when I THINK I got them figured out, I didn't match up to things I know about myself. I would be more interested in using this book with someone that knows more about homeopathy... to see their viewpoint.
it's a fun book to read to gain understanding, but I didn't find anything in it I felt I would be able to apply to my personal life.

About the Author
Cory Booker is the junior United States senator from New Jersey. He was born in Washington, D.C., and his parents, who both worked for IBM, later relocated the family to Harrington Park, New Jersey. A star high school athlete, Booker received a football scholarship to Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar before earning his law degree from Yale University. Booker won a special election to fill the term of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg to become New Jersey’s first African American senator and only the twenty-first person in American history to ascend directly from mayor to senator. Booker lives in Newark’s Central Ward.

Powerful but missing a piece...

Booker does a fantastic job of connecting anecdotal moments from his time on city council and as mayor to give life to infuriating realities that Michelle Alexander conveys in her work, The New Jim Crow; furthermore, he connects to themes that promote reforms within the criminal justice system that Bryan Stevenson has dedicated his life’s work to rectify.

There is a refreshing theme of humility throughout this book that was not always evident in Booker’s “larger than life” presence when he was first elected as mayor. Despite “having more degrees than the month of July”, Booker acknowledges a difference between schooling and education since many of his most revered mentors throughout his post-academia journey lacked the prestige tied to so much of the education portion of his resume. Booker’s recognition of the prevalent “poverty of empathy” is powerful, his connections to Gandhi and Martin L. King are uplifting; however, there are moments of hopeless that he conveys without resolve - clearly, he has much work ahead of him.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I was really disappointed that there was no mention of lessons learned from successes and failures of education reform - specifically the $100 million from Facebook. This was such a highly publicized segment of his mayoral tenure before he took the vacant senate seat. As an educator, it made me think that the political tensions around this topic could not plausibly be "United".

Regardless, I hope Senator Booker continues to write because his prose is passionate. It made me believe that he does have the power to uplift the masses to unite through an "interdependence" that he beautifully conveys through both personal anecdotes and parables.

A great read

I listened to the audiobook version, which is narrated by the author. Booker's purpose for the book was to help the reader understand his own personal mission in the government and how he hopes to help better the lives of Americans. He illustrates his family's journey through segregation and the combination of hard work, kindness, and luck that helped to get his family (and him) to where he is today. He discusses his own work in Newark and the various people who influenced him. He avoids name-dropping his celebrity friends and instead highlights the people who were on the ground doing the work when he came along to offer his help and his vision.

I appreciated the fact that Booker highlights many of the mistakes he made during the journey from Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law School graduate to Newark mayor and later U.S. Senator. Not only did he make mistakes in his approach and vision as to what he could accomplish when he first moved into Newark, but talks about mistakes that led to significant consequences. He perspective on helping alleviate poverty and racial division is inspiring and it is obvious that he is still the optimist, despite nearly twenty years of public service.

The only criticisms I have are that 1) he can be a little repetitive with facts/data/sayings through the book and 2) that he did not provide a list of sources for the data he cited in the book. I know on a recent interview someone mentioned that and he said they have the information but decided not to put it in the book because it can be easily recalled online, but citations would have been preferred for me.

This is really an extraordinary book. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired in their daily lives or to solve bigger problems in work, family or society. I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel uplifted. The vivid stories make me think about my own ancestry and heritage, my connections with my own parents and children, and with my neighborly community and the wider community beyond my small town.

In the first chapter, Cory tells about his wise and sharp-witted parents and grandparents (and ancestry behind that, and the dramatic story of learning about them), and how his family came through incredible circumstances to live in a white suburb in the early '70s. The next chapter is vivid detail of Cory's moving into a housing project and the mix of people - all of whom make up a powerful and humane narrative that applies to cities all over America. Each chapter is an incredible new experience.

The book is focusing me on my connections -- which I'm more inspired to call brotherhood/sisterhood -- including with people I don't yet know, but with whom I want to take more time to know. During the few days I read the book, I jumped out of bed in the morning to hear what's next, and because I felt more positive and inspired that day, with the greater feeling of power and optimism to improve my own kids' lives that very day. Cory's stories and attitudes ring so true, so vivid. After reading the book, I was inspired to get the book on my iPhone to listen to in the car, something I highly recommend because he reads it with both the heart and charisma that he developed, through his own hard work and the network of friendships and love that exist in his life. There's a lot of everything for everyone in this book!

It would be very sad indeed if only politically-minded people read United, and even sadder if only, say, urban Democrats read it. It's a book for everyone, the general public. It's just a great, great book! It lives up to its title. We are all united, and in ways that we're not, we should strive to be. The book inspires me to move toward that in my internal, family and outward life.

Old-fashioned bread the new-fashioned way, Betty calls it. Easy, convenient, modern. There's no knead for loafing. Not with that fabulous combination in the kitchen: Betty Crocker and the bread machine.

The construction of this book, first of all, is wonderful. The cover is hard and the binding is heavy, enameled spiral. Each page lays flat on the counter, or you can hold the book open on one arm while doing something with the other hand. This suggests that Betty Crocker wrote her bread-baking cookbook with serious use in mind. She certainly tested her recipes. A variety of bread machines were used, which means that each recipe was tested a number of different times. Betty tells you exactly what kind of flour she used, as well as salt, size of eggs, kind of yeast, etc. She leaves nothing to chance.

Bread machine baking has its own peculiarities, and Betty addresses all these right up front, the hows and how-tos (as well as the whys and wherefores) of getting the perfect loaf every time. There's a troubleshooting section, as well as a frequently asked question section. Then it's right into the recipes, all 130 of them.

Good recipes to add to your repertoire.

My daughter was using this book, and when I visited her I knew I just had to have it as well, and we even have the same bread machine. I love the recipes. We eat home-made bread exclusively, and I make a lot of it by hand, but the bread machine is a plus as well. And actually you can use these recipes in just the 'dough' mode and then finish them up by hand anyway you want. I now have a sourdough starter going from which I've made several loaves. The 4-pepper bread is great, as is the Mediterranean herb bread. I really like the wheat breads. There are just the two of us now, so it can take awhile to eat all the bread, but I can't wait to try the bread bowls and serve them up with home-made soup. I have a couple other bread machine books, as well as the one that came with my Panasonic bread machine. I have a lot of fun with all of them, and this one has added some yummy recipes to the mix.

I LOVE this Betty Crocker Best Bread Machine recipe book!! So many different varieties, very easy to understand and make. Every time I make a new one I write my own notes at the bottom so I remember what I did to create a successful loaf. Every recipe I have made in this book so far has came out very well! Best investment for a recipe book that goes with my bread machine. Totally recommend – it has pitches in the troubleshooting guide if something goes wrong – but I haven't had to use it yet. Excellent excellent! Would definitely recommend everyone to buy this that has a bread machine.

A must have for the bread maker!!

This is absolutely the best bread machine cookbook I have ever owned and I have had probably a dozen over the years. The recipes are in a simple form that make it easy to read and follow plus the writing is a good size as well. Just glancing through the book, I found several of my favorite recipes from many different books and now are all in one. Wonderful book and very well made. It feels sturdy plus I love the way it lays flat and I even bought mine used! Can't wait to try them all from cover to cover!
