awesome book

This technical note is a reprint of a 1901 Van Nostrand publication. If you look the book up on Google books, you can see that they have a fairly large selection from the book available for public viewing. A digital form of the book can also be obtained from the Forgotten books website directly. I downloaded the book first and it turned out that my downloaded form had multiple blank pages on it. I assumed that the downloadable file was just corrupted. So I made the decision to buy it from Amazon.

The book that I received was mostly blank pages. The missing pages follow the same sequence as the download. I guess there is some form of a 'Just-in-time' publication process involved here that does not pay attention to the quality of the rendered image. So what I ended up with was the printed form of a corrupt digital file.

I guess the 'publishers', Forgotten Books 'forgot' to check their printing/scanning process. They mention the caveat that they use some ridiculous OCR tech to process their scanned books. I have some personal experience with developing OCR technology and I know for a fact that it is very easy to ensure a minimum quality-metric is always satisfied. Google's scanned version attests to that.

So I am left with the big question that do the Forgotten Books people actually pay attention to what they purport to do? Or does being a non-profit enable them to circumvent any rudiments of quality?

About the Author
Mark Griep is a chemistry professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he studies the function of the enzymes that duplicate DNA in bacteria. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Dr. Griep received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and was twice elected to serve as the Chair of the Nebraska Section of the American Chemical Society. He has been studying his family history since age 13 and was delighted to be able to begin investigating Marjorie's family history after they were married. Marjorie Mikasen is a geometric painter who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally; awards include an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council and the Lincoln Mayor's Arts Award for Artistic Achievement in the Visual Arts. Her work is in public and private collections including the Sheldon Museum of Art. Mikasen was able to whistle from an early age and likes to think her ancestor Joseph Maffre had the same ability.

For those interested in the musical life of mid-1800s Montreal, a new book has recently appeared filling a gap in the history of the city. Authors
and spouses, Marjorie Mikasen and Mark Griep, have written "Joseph Maffre: Master of the Band". Their book delves into Maffre's life with a
particular focus on his years in Montreal between 1838 and 1849 as a prominent musician and composer in Montreal.

Joseph and his parents fled their country of birth - France, for England where the young man first developed his musical talents before coming to
Canada as the Master of the Band of the 71st Regiment. This was early in the evolution of British military bands and masters from the Continent were much preferred to British-borne musicians.

Maffre arrived in a diverse city open to musical entertainment where musical and choral concerts were an important social activity and where the
citizenry was keen to take music lessons. This fledgling musical life was significantly nourished by military bands. The authors have found many examples of newspaper ads about forth-coming concerts in city churches and halls where the 71st Regiment's band, under Maffre's leadership, often played.

Upon leaving the army, Maffre continued as a band leader, but he also returned to composing, publishing and teaching music. With his French
roots, it's not surprising that his compositions - often quadrilles, reflected music and dancing styles from his homeland as well as being inspired by his Canadian experience. Both in his religious practices within the family and in his musical activities, he clearly moved between Montreal's Catholic and Protestant and English and French communities in providing entertainment for the citizens.

Maffre and his English-born wife, Lucy, had ten children - some of whom followed their Father into a musical life in Montreal and environs. Joseph
and Lucy passed away within days of one another during the Montreal cholera epidemic of 1849.

Mikasen - a distant relation to Maffre, and Griep devoted spare time and holidays over twenty-five years to researching this book - and this
commitment and diligence show. They have delved into marriage, baptismal and death records in Corsica, Britain and Canada, read through newspapers published during Maffre's years in various cities and searched trans-Atlantic archives for copies of Maffre's music, pictures and maps of places where he lived, and details about his military service and the musicians with whom he played.

It's a significant work of history which a British expert on the minimally explored field of the history of British military bands has described as
"one of the most important contributions" to this field. For this reviewer - another distant relative of Joseph and Lucy, it was a fascinating and
revealing read about their lives.

Slightly damaged cover on arrival but works fine for class.

The cover had some damage when it arrived, such as a folded corner. Other then that the book is fine for class and it arrived on time. What I'm not sure about is how I go about returning it at the end of the rental period.

About the Author

Sharon F. Rallis is Dwight W. Allen Distinguished Professor of Education Policy and Reform at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she is also director of the Center for Education Policy. Previously, she was professor of education at the University of Connecticut; lecturer on education at Harvard; and associate professor of educational leadership at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. Her doctorate is from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has co-authored ten books, including several on leadership: Principals of Dynamic Schools: Taking Charge of Change (with Ellen Goldring); Dynamic Teachers: Leaders of Change (with Gretchen Rossman); Leading Dynamic Schools: How to create and Implement Ethical Policies (with Gretchen Rossman and others); and Leading with Inquiry and Action: How Principals Improve Teaching and Learning (with Matthew Militello and Ellen Goldring). Her numerous articles, book chapters, edited volumes, and technical reports address issues of research and evaluation methodology, ethical practice in research and evaluation, education policy and leadership, and school reform.

A past-president of the American Evaluation Association (2005), Rallis has been involved with education and evaluation for over three decades. She has been a teacher, counselor, principal, researcher, program evaluator, director of a major federal school reform initiative, and an elected school board member. Currently, her teaching includes courses on inquiry, program evaluation, qualitative methodology, and organizational theory. Her research has focused on the local implementation of programs driven by federal, state, or district policies. As external evaluator or principal investigator (PI), she has studied a variety of domestic and international policy and reform efforts, such as: alternative professional development for leaders; collaborations between agencies responsible for educating incarcerated or institutionalized youth; initiatives supporting inclusive education for children and youth with disabilities; local school governance and leadership; labor-management relations in school districts. Rallis’ work with students on evaluation and qualitative methodology has taken her as far as Afghanistan and Palestine.

Ordered a hardcover...got the India edition (softcover)

2 Stars. I had ordered this product expecting to get it as picture (yellow cover, 8th edition, hardcover). What I got was a softcover, New Delhi, India edition. On top of not getting the book as pictured, it also took three weeks to be delivered putting me behind for my class. I had to give this product 2 stars instead of 1 because although it was not what I was expecting, the content is there and in the correct order so I cant complain too much. If i wasn't already behind in this class I would have returned this copy for the correct one as now I cant re-sell it.

Mr. Benedict Farley wants M. Poirot's advice,..but when it doesn't keep him from dying, that doesn't sit well with Hercule. Surely you can't just dream yourself to death, so to speak,.. or can you? I picked up quite a few of Ms. Christie's short stories, all for a very low price, I was quite pleased with all of them, they do not have the detailed background as her longer works, but she never fails to please. Plot is very good, and writing excellent.
