About the Author
John Graham is the D. Richard Mead Professor of Finance at Duke University where he also serves as the Director of the CFO Global Business Outlook survey. He is coeditor of the Journal of Finance. Professor Graham is also a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, Vice President of the Western Finance Association, and been recognised for outstanding teaching and faculty contributions at Duke and the University of Utah.

Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. A prolific author, Dr. Gitman has published more than 50 articles appearing in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, the FINANCIAL REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, JOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, FINANCIAL SERVICES REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as vice president of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Michael D. Joehnk is an emeritus professor of finance at Arizona State University. In addition to his academic appointments at ASU, Dr. Joehnk spent a year as a visiting professor of finance at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Arizona State University. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), he served as a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee and of the Council of Examiners of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. He also served as a director of the Phoenix Society of Financial Analysts and as secretary-treasurer of the Western Finance Association and was elected to two terms as vice president of the Financial Management Association. Dr. Joehnk has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, five popular books, and numerous monographs. In addition to co-authoring several books with Dr. Gitman, Dr. Joehnk wrote the highly successful paperback tradebook INVESTING FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. He also has served as editor and contributed to several other prominent books. His articles have appeared in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF BANK RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, AAII JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, BELL JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS, DAILY BOND BUYER, FINANCIAL PLANNER, and other publications. This book itself is a quality textbook, however know that you will not get online access codes for myfinancelab.com, which could be critical in your class. You'll have to purchase that at an additional cost. You'll still be able to access a site called Pearson Smart Resources, but if I'm paying around $250 for a textbook, shouldn't registration for all the online materials be included?

On top of that, I didn't even receive a receipt/packing slip in my package for this book.

Watch out!

Incomplete formulas given. Several chapters very poorly organized. Practice quizes available on thier website let you know if you answered incorrectly, but don't offer correct method. Don't consider using with an online class.

As far as investing textbooks go this is probably one of the better ones. All to often it seems like textbooks are either too broad and beginner in nature or they're far to advanced and presumably assume you know much more than you do. This one strikes a fine line that makes it a fantastic educational read

First book about this line

Well.
Let me introduce this opening. Its very nice there is not a lot theory of this opening, you can suprise your opponent and take away from familiar positions.

The author unknow for me.

The opening set the black pieces d6, Nd7 and Nf6. Some close to pirc or modern defence merged with Philidor

Positive side of the opening.
1. Reduce a lot of study opening with this line because every player play e4 or d4, if you move d6, almost alway any opponent will set d4 e4 pawn structure.

2. Nice drawback for early attacks. You can counterattack very easily (if your opponent does know what happening in the chess board)

3. Nice for beginner and intermediate player.

4. Play unknow position versus stronger player

Negative Side.
OK
1. Versus experience player it not great deal because a very strong player, never goes quickly to attack, and can archive space advantage.

2 Does not have a nice record in strong games, maybe for player over 2200, hardly score a point.

3. There are easily drawacks but you must have a nice postional knowledge to find any counter attack.

I Took the star because the book does have minuature games, with this lines.

My recomendation is for club player. Strong player maybe this can help to play agains a stronger player if you want took away ur opponent from the chess thoery.

Worthy successor, but main line not analyzed

This is an excellent successor to the August 2001 hardcover English translation. However, it is not mentioned anywhere that I can find (except in the Introduction of the book) that the "genuine Philidor" is not discussed (the Hanham variation). For that, you need one of the previous versions, or The Philidor Files by Bauer The Philidor Files: Detailed Coverage of a Dynamic Opening (Everyman Chess) (which the authors mention by name). That gives the book more room to discuss other systems including the interesting games arising out of an early f4 by white. This is a fun system to play and not well known.

Beeke (Ph.D. Westminster Theological Seminary) is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, editor of The Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth, and author of numerous books.

Diana Kleyn is a member of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is the mother of three children, and has a heart for helping children understand and embrace the truths of God's Word. She writes monthly for the children's section in The Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth magazine, and is co-author with Joel R. Beeke of the series Building on the Rock.

A gem of a book!

My children (ages 7 and 12) and I are absolutely enjoying and learning from this excellent book. It is comprised of 34 chapters. For the most part, one whole chapter is dedicated to the life of each forerunner or reformer mentioned by the previous reviewer. Chapters 18 and 32 discuss the Heidelberg Catechism and the Anabaptists respectively. It has 6 appendixes which include among other things a map of Europe in 1550, a glossary, and study questions for each chapter. There are great black and white illustrations throughout the book. The recommended age for this book would be upper elementary to adults. Many lower elementary children could also benefit if the book is read to them. This book is a gem! L.Q.

The Years of Living Dangerously, yet Blessedly

Over time my role models have changed from sport athletes and Holywood figures like John Rambo and Jet Lee during childhood and adolescent days, to Christian heroes among whom are the servants of the Reformation, as I was exposed to their biography. The majority of today's role models, even among Christians, are measured by different parameters from those presented in "Reformation Heroes." The difference is, to borrow from Pastor John Piper, between success versus significance. One effect of reading biographies like "Reformation Heroes" is to lead us to compare the way we usually define success, as in winning a sport championship, or being popular and wealthy because of looks, skills and abilities, or living comfortably happily ever after, to the kind of impact or significance to this very day, the theology, lifestyle, character, camaraderie, loyalty, valor, and sacrifice of the Reformers, and most importantly, the cause they lived and died for that drove them to live the way they lived. This is significance. This is true success. It is not for no reason why "Soli Deo Gloria" is the last watchword of the five Solas of the Reformation that describes the holy passion burning in their bosom. Thus Hebrews 13:7 commands us to "consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith." Dr. Beeke and Ms. Kleyn have this objective in mind as they write in the introduction, "May you, dear children and young people, be among them" referring to "the godly men and women who live for His glory."

"Reformation Heroes" is a chronological presentation of the life of the servants of both Pre-Reformation and the Reformation itself throughout Europe against papacy, one of the greatest, most brutal, most cunning tyrannies in history. Peter Waldo of France, John Wycliffe of England, Anne of Bohemia, Queen of Richard II, and John Huss, both of Bohemia marked the dawn of this blessed era. Then came Luther, Melanchthon, Bucer, Zwingli and Bullinger in Germany and Switzerland, respectively. The scene then shifted to England where the Reformation leaders were Tyndale, King Edward VI, Cranmer, Latimer, Ridley, Foxe, and Knox. Next, the Reformers in the so-called Lowlands; modern-day Belgium, Netherland and Northern France, are presented, after whom came Vermigli, Calvin and Beza. If I were to pick what stunned me the most, I would go with Anne of Bohemia, Luther, Queen Marguerite of Navarre and her daughter Jeanne with the Huguenots, as well as Charlotte, the Nun of Jouarre, the last three lived to see the fateful St Bartholomew's Day.

It is natural to think that the most blessed time is the time of outward prosperity, yet somehow I see that perspective changed and it is confirmed after getting more exposure of the Reformation days through this book. Though these were the years of living dangerously, they were blessed years. Persecution was fierce. Violence was glaring. Evil was overwhelming. Poverty was rampant. Plagues were raging. Yet grace was abundant. The gospel truth was so dear of a cause. The power and glory of God blazed forth through His true church triumphant. Eternity was so close. One was not guaranteed to live through the day, let alone tomorrow. There were no boring days, no time for trifling. There were blood earnestness, sense of urgency, sweet friendships, and passionate debates, though they weren't free from flaws, pride and hatred, inevitable realities of life in a fallen world. "Reformation Heroes" is doubtless a must-read for youths and adults alike, ages 8 to 108.

Dr. Ed F. Vallowe, for many years, pastor of churches in Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia; music and educational director in Missouri, Illinois and Texas, and for the past thirty eight years a full time evangelist, revivalist, and Bible conference prophecy teacher, has written some 24 books during his fifty years in the ministry.

He served for many years as the editor of the Revival Echoes newspaper and has travelled extensively conducting over 1900 revivals, and Bible conferences. He has taught the book of Revelation over 1200 times in 45 states and is one of the foremost authorities on prophecy in these last days.

He is in great demand as a speaker and Bible conference leader, and as an evangelist, and has always been able to make the Bible relevant to contemporary man.

At present, Dr. Vallowe is President of the Valo-Tours Travel Agency and conducts tours for Christians to the Middle East annually. His ministry has taken him around the world in 60 foreign countries preaching and teaching the Gospel message.

A badly missed chance to assess a charismatic leader

I read this book because, both as a teenager and an adult, I have been intrigued by Walter Reuther. His stirring rhetoric, his youthful, dynamic image, and his sophistication all seemed to set him apart from, and way above, other union leaders. I expected to learn from this book "what made Walter tick," and to better understand the fate of American unionism. I came away with neither hope realized. Instead, I had to slog through an ideologically tinged micro analysis of the history of the UAW, and a depiction of its leader as an opportunist who all too often flinched from making decisions as bold as his rhetoric once he had achieved power. Most disappointing of all, I never came close to understanding what made him tick. While the author concedes in his introduction that it was very difficult to delve below the surface of the public man, surely he could have learned and conveyed more given the prodigious amount of research he conducted, including numerous interviews with close Reuther associates. Add to this the author's writing style--he loves compound sentences with two different messages--and this is a very difficult book to read. Then there is the author's failure to devote more than a modicum of attention to major events in the UAW history--why and how did it merge with the CIO, why did it merge with the AFL, and what precise role did Reuther play in these huge decisions? It says absolutely nothing about the crisis in quality control that so greatly contributed to the decline in popularity of American automobiles, e.g., "Be sure you do not buy a car from Detroit made on a Friday or a Monday!" Finally, in the author's otherwise excellent concluding chapter, he says nothing about the evolution of the economy to a post-industrial era, and the difficulties this poses for maintaining the continued strength and relevance of industrial unionism.

Besides leaving behind a freeway named after him, Reuther is a modern Father of the Radical Left, and has left behind a legacy of Union corruption, crooked party politics, and collective brainwashing. A fascinating book, a fascinating man, and a heck of a story, it's ideologically incorrect in that it exalts Reuther toward legacy status, and it appeases those that believe in the power of government, and the collective mentality of the masses. It's all good and well, says the author, because unions and government usurpation and regulation are all glorious. Horrible mentality, but good writing and research. Reach your own judgements.
