My favorite book of 2013

Fantastic book! Bailey's ethnography of Ballroom in Detroit, illuminates the ways Black sexual marginals resist multiple forms of exclusion to create a new gender and sexual system and kinship through a dynamic form of cultural production. Read this book if you want to be challenged and inspired!

So I used this text in an Anthropology course, specifically to understand the experiences of those who are in the LGBTQ community. This text helped alot since it centered on the black LGBTQ community in Detroit. I never knew that in Detroit the culture was accommodating of gender variant individuals. As I soon found out, from watching the films Paris is Burning and The Aggressives, even though a community may appear accommodating of queers and transgender individuals power hierarchies exist within their own identities and categories. This was a good enthography to read as introduction into the world of the black LGBTQ community in Detroit. This would be a good text for most anthropology courses which focus on gender variant individuals. The book arrived on time however, due to its packaging the back spine was torn. However it was able to serve my purpose for my anthropology course and that's all that I needed. So I gave it three stars due to the packaging which resulted in a tear on the spine, however besides that the book came in good condition and was ready for use.

I am from Detroit and had no idea about the burgeoning Ballroom Community in the city, which speaks to the author's point. I love the critical analysis being brought to bear on the subject matter. The author effectively combines his personal voice and experience with an academic analysis.

Boyer's "The Basic School" -inspirational and humbling.

Ernest Boyer's book, "The basic school", is the result of considerable research and involvement in elementary school education. Boyer has set out what is probably the most comprehensive description of what excellent education is. For all principals and teachers who are buried beneath the avalanche of daily crises, the book offers a periscope, a `big picture view of education' and a sense of direction.

I see this book as one of the most comprehensive, inspirational and practical books on education that I have read but I am humbled when I realise how much further we in education still have to go.

If the book has one shortcoming it is that it's a brilliant description of contemporary education and it does not engage in the debate of future pedagogy and future schooling.

Still, if you want to be inspired, revitalised or even educationally `quickened' this is book great value, a great read and a great motivational tool.

Loaded with communication tips and tools!

I am so glad this book was written. It is not an easy task to always be able to get a point across but learning how, when and why really makes a difference. Johnson is straight to the point with a bit of humor, his writing style is easy to read and full of 'ah ha' moments! This is a great book for women seeking to choose a 'good man', especially helpful to divorced women re-entering the dating world and a real gift to the new bride! Myself, married more then 25 years found it to be refreshing and uplifting. Thanks!

A Whole New View

This book was amazing! It offers amazing insight into the qualities that constitute a good man and a good father, particularly to those of us who weren't blessed to have that role model as a child. It helped me to understand what to value and expect, as well as what to seek after in raising my sons. This is a must have for any woman who is still looking for the love of her life or for the woman who has him and thinks things could be even better. There is something for everyone.

Do you want to positively influence your husband? This book explores how to communicate better with him and change your marriage. You will learn ways to encourage him and build his self-esteem. By following the guidelines in this book you will have a more supportive and happy husband.

Although a man wrote this book, it is primarily for a woman to read. As you read this insightful book you may disagree with some of what is written. However, there are many principles to apply to your everyday interaction with the man in your life. There is advice on how to encourage him to be the leader in your family. The author advises you do this by stepping back and letting him be the lead decision maker even if you don't agree with the decision. The author does point out that the women should be allowed to voice her opinion. He states that in the end, to teach her husband leadership, a wife should let the decision be his. Letting him be the final word in the family decisions will also help build his self-esteem.

The author repeatedly comments that praise and admiration are the best tools to having a healthy relationship with your husband. When your husband feels respected he will show you more respect. This book is funny at times, always easy to read and definitely filled with practical advice.

Excellent backing tracks

Tired of playing along to the original albums? Me too.

I got this book because of just one song: "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" which has been a favorite of mine since the very first time I heard it. Though I've been playing it for years, it's really fun to have such a good backing track to jam with.

If you want to learn Duane's and Dickie's solos for these several songs, the transcriptions are very well done. The recordings are of complete songs so you get entire solos (keyboard solos included--on CD only). Even the drums sound like ABB.

As a personal preference, there are a couple songs I'd have left out. "Little Martha" is one. Only Duane's part is transcribed. Bummer, because it's really not too hard for a single player to combine the best of both parts and play them at once. You won't get that here, but you may not care when you're playing Duane's part over the backing track of Dickie's part. Another song I'd have left off is "Revival". Not a bad song, I just don't think I'd ever want to play it.

In place of those two I'd prefer "Hot 'Lanta" and the *Live at Filmore East* version of "Stormy Monday" or even "Ain't Wastin' Time No More". Really, it's not my place to criticize what's not there, because this book is worth every penny. Maybe Hal Leonard would consider an additional Duane Allman, or Allman Brothers play along some day. It would sell.

There is A LOT to like about this book--my petty complaints aside. Who wouldn't want to jam out on "Blue Sky" or "Trouble No More"?

Over all this is a keeper. Good recordings, good transcriptions, good selections. Want more? Buy another book. The *Definitive Collection For Guitar* is out in 3 volumes, but you don't get play along CDs with those.

I'm perfectly happy jamming over "Liz Reed" until the neighbors can't stand it anymore.

This book is great as it comes with a CD that allows you to copy cat and play along with the lead guitar or play along with the rhytym and you supply the lead. A BLAST.

About the Author

Board certified in internal medicine, Soram Khalsa, M.D., is a clinical professor of medicine and past Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Environmental Medicine Center of Excellence at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also a member of the Bureau of Naturopathic Medicine Advisory Council for the State of California and serves as Medical Director for the East-West Medical Research Institute. In 2007, Dr. Khalsa was chosen by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors” in America and serves in this capacity as a consultant for integrative medicine.

Dr. Khalsa is a founding member of the American Holistic Medical Association, a founding member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, and was also a member of the Outside Scientific Advisory Board for the NIH-sponsored Center on Botanical Studies at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In his private medical practice, he integrates phytotherapeutics, homeopathy, acupuncture, and environmental medicine with traditional internal medicine.

Dr. Khalsa is also an associate physician in the Division of Internal Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Good information clearly written

Dozens of medical research studies leave no doubt that having enough vitamin D will provide strong protection against cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and diseases that collectively kill over 2 million Americans every year. The studies typically show that after 5 years or so, those in the highest quartile of vitamin D status die from chronic degenerative diseases less than half as much as those in the lowest quartile. Dr. Soram Khalsa does a good job of explaining the benefits and cutting through the confusion and misinformation. The Vitamin D Revolution is a good starting point for anyone wanting to prevent serious illness or supercharge their immune system.

There is so much good information contained in this book I would recommend it to anyone. It is clearly written in non-technical language and is carefully and extensively researched. Starting on page 67, Dr. Khalsa's explanation of long-latency vs short-latency deficiency diseases sheds important light in how and why the government recommends an inadequate daily dose of 400 international units. (They were addressing bone disease but were unaware at the time of vitamin D's role in other far more serious diseases that take decades to develop.) There is an excellent description on page 8 on what makes vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) better than D2 (ergocalciferol). On page 140 he points out doctors sometimes mistakenly prescribe the 1,25(OH2)D blood test whereas the only reliable test is the 25(OH)D.

The ultimate message of the book is that we should all be trying to obtain a blood level around 50 mg/mL based on the 25(OH)D blood test, which in most people requires supplementing with 5000 IU of vitamin D3. Semiannual blood test are a good idea to track your progress and insure you don't overdose. If you take away nothing more than this message you and vow to follow through on it, you will be well on your way to better health.

I am giving this book a rating of 5 stars. Dr. Khalsa is to be highly commended for his dedication to the health of his patients and readers of this excellent book. If everyone everywhere became knowledgeable on vitamin D and optimized their blood level, the impact on public health would be extreme. Dr. Khalsa states that widespread vitamin D supplementation has the very real potential of putting a serious dent in the health crisis that costs over $2 trillion per year in the US alone.

The Vitamin D Revolution starts with you, and reading this book and implementing its suggestions will place you squarely at the front lines of this important grassroots movement.

Highly recommended for any clinician doing aesthetic injection treatments.

Excellent illustrations. The blended images of the patient's face and underlying anatomy help enormously with one's understanding as do the anatomical cross section illustrations. The text is useful as a manual for any new injector. As a full time cosmetic medicine doctor for the past 7 years I still found a great deal of useful information on some of the less commonly taught indications for botulinum toxin. Highly recommended for any clinician doing aesthetic injection treatments.

Populism is a widely used concept but it is rarely fully understood. For a term which appears so frequently in both popular and specialist writing, the social sciences have given it remarkably little attention. In this study, the author surveys the field and concludes that populism has suffered from being considered usually in relation to particular contexts and has therefore become a rather fractured and elusive concept in general terms. To remedy this, the author introduces several themes which illuminates populism across different historical and contemporary cases. he provides a new definition of populism, a survey of other definitions and perspectives, and a guide to populist politics around the world, including the United States, Russia, Latin America, western Europe and Canada. The second part of the book focuses on the problems of populism and how it relates to democracy, particularly to representative politics. Written in an accessible style, this book should be of interest to those with an interest in politics and sociology who are studying political ideas, ideologies and social movements.
