Meet Ben
“Ben was touring a small village in Costa Rica with a group. During the tour, he got distracted and saw this beautiful woman. His heart skipped a beat and was eager to approach her. But there was only one small problem. He didn’t even know what to say to her. In Spanish.
But he approached her anyways. He said “hello” to her in English and started talking to her. But the look on her face wasn’t all smiles and giggles. It was confusion. She had no idea what he said. “I’m such an idiot,” Ben said to himself. He turned around to go back to his group..only to see that they were long gone. ‘Oh no!’, Ben said to himself. His heart was beating fast. He was lost. And he didn’t know a word of Spanish to ask for help. He searched the entire village for an hour until the group finally returned. Thanks to his lack of knowledge in Spanish, Ben missed out on a lot. His tour group went on a jungle adventure and explored caves. He was disappointed. But on the bright side, he did relax at the beach later that day. Perfect for the stress he went through. But the old ‘I wish I knew Spanish’ kept echoing in his head.”

So..What’s The Situation Here
Ben was in an unfamiliar place. He didn’t know a single word of Spanish. And it created a huge language barrier between himself and the local people. Of course, not everyone around the world can speak English. So, he got lost and missed out on a lot of things he was excited for. All because he got lost and did not know even the basics of Spanish.

Spanish for beginners..
By Kimberly
A great guide for beginners. It's a great way to start learning the Spanish language. The author starts from the very basic level- the alphabet then goes into simple greetings, then basic expressions and daily vocabulary. This step by step guide really helps in learning Spanish quickly but very in depth and progressive.

Informative guide with sample phrases
By Theo Martin
I think this is a good collection of Spanish phrases and words to learn. There are also charts and tables that are filled with information such as the past, future and present tenses of the words. I think this guide made it easier to remember spanish phrases, words and sentences. It made learning Spanish really fun and easy. I'm impressed with this guide as it helped improve my vocabulary in Spanish and understand the sentence patterns and common phrases to learn for tourists.

Better than I expected
By Sabooski's Hip Meow
I'm not a gamer at all, I'm a reader. I do love the whole mythos of this WARHAMMER universe, especially the Trilogies and Omnibuses. I decided to give a 'Time of Legends' trilogy a try and settled on 'The Rise of Nagash' (RoN). There are two other 1000+ page 'Time of Legends' tomes which comprise what is refered to as the Warhammer 'Old World', 'SIGMAR' and 'THE SUNDERING'.

One thing that is very cool about the overall Warhammer Universe is how all the books' (there are alot of books and alot of authors) kinda link up with each other (some more direct than others of course). This aspect is what gives The Rise of Nagash an extra kick. Not only is a HUGE story presented here, this 3 parter flows well when read as a whole.

Though RoN is more fantasy oriented, the basic WAR CULTURE so prevelant in WH40K remains sacrosanct. This book offers up a BIG feast of battles, sorcery, and EVIL. In effect, The Rise of Nagash is bigger and badder than anything from Lord of the Rings. It's not that the book is written better (lets be honest, it's not) but when you take into account ALL the books' that feed into it, all the history yet to be explored (as a fantasy or sci-fi, or both), the scope of vision becomes VAST. You can get lost in it. I did.

My main quibble is not in the story itself, it's in the 2 page MAP provided at the begining of this 1000+ page read. If you can hark back to the days when Lord of the Rings was published it included a map of Middle Earth which gave the reader a decent overview of the land our adventurers traversed. I remembered back in the late 60's I even purchased a 2 1/2ft x 3ft poster of this same map from the books. I could track my progress through the books from this map. It gave the whole Middle Earth landscape a 'real' feel.

The problem here is that the map included is all screwed up. There is no time reference on the map's Legend/Key, or any way to gauge distance. In RoN the book takes place over centuries (each book delves in specific periods). The place names and particular events shown on the map are from several different timeframes. In other words they never existed as such during the same time. So, some cities go by different titles under different rulers; many places mentioned (alot) in the trilogy are not labeled with the same identifiers on the map, including rivers, trade routes, etc. I was never quite sure if I was reading the map correctly.

When reading and refering back to the map it's very hard to figure in what (ie: specific "era"), where (ie: descriptions do not match map geography) and who (ie: certain characters' have limited knowledge of topography and make references to places I could not find). The fact that several battles (hundreds of years apart) are listed along a certain route make it extra confusing because nothing of a chapter's current war(s) is clearly shown.

If only the Black Library publishers had spent more time on this it would have really enhanced the overall tale's historic range.

Add to this the fact that author Mike Lee writes primarily in 10 page chapters where the story timeline can jump about with each chapter. Thankfully more times than not several 'chapters' do follow chronologically and much ground is covered then, giving the book pace a much needed progression. There were great swathes of pages where I could not put the book down.

Bottomline: best read as a single complete read, not as 3 separate installments. This book will give you a great partial perspective on the WARHAMMER 'OLD WORLD' with the focus on the origins' of the Undead and Vampyres found throughout the WH40K History to follow. Easiest to follow the flow of the story by using the 'Imperial Reckoning +/- (in years)' calender that is located beneath the title of each chapter. Very enjoyable read.

Great Read!
By Bossk
I really enjoyed this series and I must admit, even though Nagash is a vile villain, I was rooting for him! I had never read any other Warhammer books nor have I played the game, so I am completely unfamiliar with the lore, but this series seemed to be a great way to get involved.

The series spans a long number of years which keeps every book fresh, and even focuses on another group of characters in book 2. I didn't mind that at all since I felt like the series was to help people understand the characters in the Warhammer universe. If you enjoy necromancy and antiheroes, you should enjoy this omnibus.

Excellent anthology in the Time of Legends series!
By M. Hubbard
I thoroughly enjoyed all three of the books that make up this anthology. If you have read Gotrek & Felix books and have been curious about the occasional references to "Nagash the Great Necromancer" or "Nehekara" or about the origin of vampires in the World of Warhammer, then this is the anthology for you.

An angry, long-winded tirade
By MuzikJunky
Shahrazad Ali, controversial author of such books as "The Blackman's Guide to Understanding the Blackwoman" and "How Not to Eat Pork (Or Life without the Pig)," offers us this supposed survival guide for Black people living in the USA. Using her Nation of Islam-influenced beliefs, the author quizzes the reader about how one lives in the USA. The book is presented in the form of a multiple-choice test, and one's score, from answering the various questions about history, lifestyle, and culture, determines whether the reader is living as a slave. Unfortunately, this book is laughable at best.

Ms. Ali provides no evidence whatsoever to back up her claims. She presents her material as fact--without a single bit of research--and yet she drops the names of such classical Afrocentric thinkers as Molefi Kete Asante and Cheikh Anta Diop. Do not confuse Ali's anger with scholarship. The Nation of Islam and other Black nationalist organizations must not be mistaken for Afrocentricity, a legitimate philosophical discipline.

Furthermore, while Ms. Ali attempts to be universal with her beliefs, it is evident that this form of writing is a most American phenomenon, in both flavor and presentation. If you are interested in classical Afrocentric philosophy and scholarship, there are many books available, including those of the authors mentioned above, that will satisfy your curiostity.

Don't Waste Your Time!
By Andre M.
This book continues Sharazad Ali's sad tradition of whacked out, mean spirited pseudoscience and pseudohistory that appeals only to extremely bitter and half educated African-American social rejects looking for an outlet for their misdirected anger.
Essentially, the book is a series of quizzes that imply that any Black American who has any positive encounter with Whites are still slaves. One particularly outrageous Q&A states that any Black person who laughes at a White man's joke is still a slave (so does this mean that I belong in the cotton patch for laughing at Jakcie Gleason and the Honeymooners)?
A good subtitle of this book (as well as Sharazad's other epics of nonsense) should be "The Miseducation of a Negro" (with apologies to Carter G. Woodson).

Some mistakes are worth repeating…

Tasha Riordan's one night with Luc Bradshaw was the best of her life. The following two—when he left her to be thrown into a Bahamian jail on bogus charges—were her worst. Now, seven years later, the undercover DEA agent is back. Invading her town. Her restaurant. Her fantasies. She can't trust a man who lied to her. Yet neither can she trust herself—not when their chemistry burns even hotter than before.

Learning he has two half brothers shocks Luc. Discovering they live in the same town as Tasha—that's a different kind of thrill. Their mutual lust is still off the charts, but he can't get her to listen to his side of what happened on that long-ago night. Good thing he's got powers of persuasion that go deeper than words. Because nothing has ever felt this right….

"Crap," Tasha whispered as she pulled up behind the other cars in Max's driveway. She was beyond late.

And this comes as a big surprise to you? her inner smart-ass demanded.

Well, no. But not seeing the men hanging out on the porch, grilling up a storm as usual, and knowing they likely weren't out back, either, since it had been raining off and on all day, just drove the truth of her tardiness home. Because that could mean only one thing, couldn't it? Everyone was either in the midst of dinner or—an even worse possibility—were already cleaning up.

She climbed out of the car and went around to the trunk to haul out her contributions to Harper's mom's going-away party. Dammit, not only had she not meant to be so late, she'd fully intended to get here early to help with the preparations. She certainly hadn't counted on the new man she'd hired for her pizzeria turning out to be a lush. A freaking on-the-job lush.

You had to appreciate the irony here. She'd thought she had it all figured out. With the drop in business now that Labor Day was behind them and most of the tourists gone, her big plan had been to hire another cook to work part-time. She really could have used help with the summer rush this year, yet with it over, they were spared the crazy thrown-in-the-deepend, sinkor-swim pressure. Now the new hire could take his time getting up to speed, and she'd add to his hours as he progressed. Stress-free had been her aim, the end goal to be sitting pretty by the time next summer's rush began.

She snorted. In theory it was such a lovely, proactive idea and one that should eventually provide her some honest-to-God days off. And who knew, maybe it'd even give her a shot at an actual life. That was certainly something she'd had damn little of this summer. Once she got accustomed to the luxury of occasional free days, she might go totally hog wild and build her way up to treating herself to an actual vacation.

Okay, so the mere idea made her heart pound with anxiety and left a coppery taste in her mouth. But wasn't it way past time she got over that?

Not that it mattered now. At this point the question was purely rhetorical. Her new cook, who had interviewed brilliantly, had in all likelihood already been drunk when he'd shown up for work. And if he hadn't arrived with a good head start down Knee-walking Avenue, he'd definitely been fall-on-his-face hammered by the time she'd thrown his sorry ass out of Bella T's. On her own house wine, no less, which just added an abundance of salt to the wound.

But the final straw, what truly and royally most pissed her off, was the way the bastard had tried to blame the wine theft on Jeremy, the Cedar Village boy who'd started bussing for her just the other week. The Village was a group home outside of town that helped troubled boys get their lives together, which was precisely what Jeremy was doing. The last thing he needed was for some ass to come along and falsely accuse him of larceny.

She climbed the porch steps but stopped before she reached the door. Setting down her goodies, she did her best to brush lint off her shorts, then reached into her purse for her lipstick.

One of the first things she'd noticed about Harper when the elegant mixed-race woman had come to Razor Bay was that, no matter what the occasion, she was always dressed perfectly for it. And clearly her mad style skills were directly inherited from Gina, because that went double for Harper's sophisticated mother.

She, on the other hand, had been so rattled by the time she'd gotten the drunk cook out of Bella T's, locked up and run upstairs to change that she'd pretty much grabbed the first thing to come to hand. That had turned out to be this linty pair of black walking shorts and—more fortunately—one of her nicer tank tops in a rich blue that almost, if not quite, gave her more-gray-than-blue eyes a hint more blue. After topping it with her little black cardigan and grabbing the foodstuffs she'd put together for the party, she'd dashed back out again.

Without a speck of makeup on, aside from the mascara she'd applied this morning so people would know she really did have eyelashes—even if they were so pale one might be excused for thinking otherwise.

She swiped on some lipstick, knocked on the door and let herself in. "Hey," she called out over the laughter and voices coming from near Max's unfinished kitchen. "Sorry I'm so late. But I brought a couple bottles of red to make up for it. And some homemade guacamole and veggie-tray fixings."

She strode in sight of the long table full of people and spotted her bestie, Jenny, first, sitting next to Jake. "Hey, girlie," she said, then greeted the Damoths and Mary-Margaret, who headed the Village, and their hosts Max and Harper and Harper's mom. But she stopped dead in full-out shock as her eyes met the velvety dark gaze of a golden-skinned, chiseled-faced man. Images of a younger face flashed across her mind's screen with lightning speed even as the heat of remembered kisses, caresses, sizzled through her veins, and she blinked, certain she was seeing things.

But, no. Dear God. It wasn't, shouldn't be possible, but it really was Diego NoLastName, the rat bastard who'd landed her in a Bahamian jail cell back when she was younger and stupider—or at least stupidly naive—and the last person she'd ever expected to see again. Yet there he sat at Max and Harper's table, all black hair, black eyes and dark stubble, looking muscular, vital and bigger than life.

Her brain began buzzing with the staticky sound of a radio dialed half a notch off its station, and her hand went lax. The reusable cloth bag she'd stuffed full of wine and party food dropped to the floor, then tipped on its side.

She barely noticed when its contents scattered in all directions.

Holy shit. The scene unfolding around him went into slo-mo, and Luc Bradshaw came half out of his chair along with every other person around the table. Everyone seemed to be exclaiming and generally making a commotion in their desire to help the long-legged woman who'd stooped to gather the bottles of wine and plastic containers that rolled and skittered across the floor.

To him it was muffled white noise. He stared down at her bent head and unconsciously rubbed his diaphragm over the lower lobe of his left lung. When had all the air in here turned the consistency of Jell-O?

Jesus. It was Tasha.

Like he hadn't known that the instant she'd blown into the room. Still, how many times this week had Jenny, his newly discovered half brother Jake's fiancée, mentioned her BFF Tasha? His damn heart had seized a little every time he'd heard the name, even knowing Jenny was talking about someone other than the Tasha he'd known. It wasn't until maybe two hours ago that he'd finally reached the point where it didn't start up a chain reaction in his chest. So you'd have to excuse the hell out of him if for a second there he'd actually believed he was imagining things. Because what were the odds?

Damn good, it turned out. For this was his Tasha. Of all the women in his past he would have been perfectly content to see disappear without a trace, she had never been among their ranks.

He watched her vivid blue tank top beneath the cropped hem of a little sweater pull free from her shorts' waistband, exposing a slice of pale satiny skin as, sitting on her heels, she stretched to grab one of the runaway bottles. Then he gave her a comprehensive survey from head to toe, concentrating for a moment on her round rump. She was quite a bit more…womanly now than the barely legal girl he remembered.

He swallowed a snort. Well, big surprise; it had been seven years since he'd seen her. So, yeah, she had a little more curve to her. But she still had no hips, and by no stretch of the imagination would anyone call her voluptuous.

Those riotous curls of hers were different, too: more sleekly defined than he recalled. But her long-lidded pale blue-gray eyes and that pillowy mouth with its fuller upper lip hadn't changed a bit.

So screw the minor differences. She could have grown a mustache, sprouted a hairy mole and packed fifty pounds on her long frame, and he would still know her anywhere. He hadn't the slightest doubt in his mind that this was the girl he'd spent two days and one memorable night with in the Bahamas.

"Tash!" Jenny moved to squat alongside the tall strawberry blonde, and it was as if the speed and sound of a movie had been switched back on. "Are you okay?"

Strawberry blond. He'd discovered after his night with her that that was what people called the pale redgold color of her hair. Staring at her, he felt his entire face light up with a delighted smile.

It died an abrupt death when she suddenly raised her gaze and looked straight at him. His entire body recoiled as if a fireball were hurtling straight toward his head, and he dropped back into his seat. Because those eyes, that expression.

If looks could kill, he'd be sliced and diced into tiny bite-sized bits of steak tartare. What the fuck?

She glanced back at Jenny and apparently didn't level that scary look on her as well, because there was no recoiling on Jenny's part.

"No," Tasha said in answer to the are you okay? question as she handed the little brunette first one wine bottle, then another. She must have gathered the rest of the containers as well, for she rose to her feet and extended the cloth sack to Gina, an elegant, slightly darker version of her daughter, Harper, who was Luc's other half brother Max's woman.

Christ. All these relationships were making his head hurt.

"I'm so sorry," Tasha said as the older woman accepted the bag. "I hate the thought of both you going back to Winston-Salem and me missing your party, but I don't feel so hot."

"Yes, you look quite pale, dear," Gina agreed, reaching out to give Tasha's forearm a soothing rub. "You go home and go to bed. Hopefully you can sleep off whatever this bug is."

"It's not the flu, but bug sure seems like an appropriate word for it." Tasha shot him another lightning-fast malevolent glare, then said a touch grimly to the older woman, "I suddenly feel like a hairy, nasty spider is crawling up my spine. I haven't felt this awful in almost a decade, and what I'd like to do is shoot the bastard between his beady little eyes."

Twisting to set the wine on the table, Jenny narrowed a thoughtful gaze on Luc, then turned back to study Tasha for a second. "Poor baby. You want me to drive you home? Jake can bring your car back in the morning."

Luc watched a look perilously close to panic flash across Tasha's face. Or maybe he only thought that was what he'd seen, because when he blinked, she appeared perfectly calm.

Tasha patted Jenny's hand. "No, I'm fine to drive. I've just been burning my candle at both ends since tourist season started, and I guess it's finally caught up with me. I desperately need some sleep."

"Good thing you've got an extra helper in the works," Jenny said.

An edgy laugh escaped Tasha. "Ah, yeah, about that. It turns out that's not going to happen." She suddenly seemed ready to wilt as she shoveled long, pale fingers through her hair. "I'll tell you about it tomorrow." She looked away from the little brunette to the rest of the company gathered around the table.

Well, except for him. Now that she'd finished eviscerating him with her death-ray stare, she evidently had no desire to even glance his way again.

"I'm sorry for the drama," she said to the group at large, then focused her attention on Gina once more, bestowing on her the sweet, generous smile that had been branded on Luc's brain for seven long years. "Have a safe journey home," she said, giving the other woman a hug. When she pulled back, she gazed at Gina with warm-eyed affection. "I've just loved getting to know you. I really hope you'll come back soon."

"Oh, I intend to, darling," Gina said. "My favorite daughter lives here now."

"Uh, Mom?" Harper said dryly. "I'm your only daughter."

Gina gave an elegant shrug. "But you're still my one and only Baby Girl."

Harper's olive-green irises all but disappeared behind the lashes-fringed crescents her eyes became as she grinned. "That's true."

Tasha exchanged a few more pleasantries with the guests. Then between one moment and the next, she'd said her goodbyes, strode out through the kitchen and was gone.

Luc pushed back from the table and rose to his feet. "Okay if I grab myself a beer?" he asked Max.

"Help yourself," his half brother invited even as Harper said, "Here, let me get it for you" and started to rise to her feet.

No! his mind snarled. But he hadn't spent more than a decade in deep cover for the DEA for nothing. He flashed her the friendly charmer's smile that years of practice had rendered second nature and merely said, "Please, Harper, you don't need to wait on me."

"Yeah, Harper," Jake said. "He's family. Which means he can do the dishes, too."

"Or at least fetch my own drink. Anyone else want anything while I'm in there?"

No takers chimed in, and he left the room with an unhurried stride that nevertheless ate up the distance between the table and the back door. Silently letting himself out, he spotted Tasha heading toward the end of the attached garage, with the obvious intention of making a beeline for the parking apron around front. Clouds the color of a day-old bruise hung low in the sky, but for the moment at least, it was dry, and ignoring the few back steps, he dropped directly to the lawn, landing lightly on the balls of his feet.

He could move fast and silent as ground fog when the need arose, and he came up on Tasha's flank just as she rounded the end of the garage. He moved into its shadow one step behind her and reached out, his fingertips brushing her arm. "Hey, Tasha, wait—"

With a gasp, she whipped around. Wild panic flared in her clear gray eyes, and watching her suck in a breath and open her lips, Luc knew she was about one second away from screaming down the house. Snaking a hand around her nape, he clamped his free palm over her mouth to keep her from cutting loose with a screech that would bring everyone inside stampeding to her rescue.

Not that there was anything she needed rescuing from—Jesus, he would never hurt her. All the same, he really didn't want his deputy sheriff half brother thundering down on him. He didn't doubt for an instant that if Max heard a woman scream, he would be out here in a red-hot hurry, his big-ass service pistol drawn.

"I'm sorry," he said in the most soothing, nonthreatening voice he could summon. Her lips were soft and her skin warm beneath his hands.

The Queen of Romance Continues Her Reign.
By Nanadeb
This is the third book in The Razor Bay series by Susan Andersen and, by far, my favorite. I love couples with a past and Diego (uh huh) and Tasha have it in spades. Everything by Susan Andersen is on my Kindle and she is an automatic preorder for me. The way her novels flow and the ease in which they progress makes her one of my favorite authors. Her heroines are always feisty and take crap from no one. The heroes are alpha and always brought to their knees-for more than one reason. This new book was worth what seemed like an eternal wait. The love scenes are steamier and the fight scenes are verbally choreographed for the readers complete entertainment. This book downloaded last night and I just finished it. But her books always do that to me. Chapter 16 is awesome and Diego, or Luc, is now one of my favorite "Susan" heroes. One of her strengths is the appeal of the supporting characters. I am hoping we get to see Peyton and a couple of the others get a story later on. You cannot go wrong with this book or the series. I highly recommend them both.

Boring
By Claire
I enjoyed Susan Andersen's early books but found her recent ones much less compelling and went on an "Andersen break". I thought I'd try No Strings Attached to see if things had changed. They haven't. In fact, this book was very hard to get through. It started out pretty well but within a few chapters the tension was all over, the dialogue was uninteresting and the rest of the story felt like a hard slog. The characters were attractive but were hardly developed at all and while there was definitely lust between H/h, I just couldn't see why they would stay together once the sex became more routine; the secondary plot involved a couple of teenagers I just plain didn't care about even though it rang "truer" than H/h; and there was a lot of filler about the back stories of the other secondary characters from earlier books. In all, this was a bore and it certainly did not deliver any kind of emotionally satisfying HEA (for the reader). I would pass on this one.

My kinda LOVE story.
By DAJS
Excellent characters, friends, local ongoing work and life, plot, romance and some sex. Every day normal life. This story depicted a town, people, troubles and romance that reflects what one could find or expect to find/do in REAL life.
However IF YOUR looking for a book 3/4's filled with explicitly descriptive raunchy sex, GO find an author who writes about nothing but overly explicit sex, most of which doesn't - couldn't happen within a 24 hour time span, let alone a the time span depicted in those books. Neither a 'he or a she' is physically capable of what of "those so called author's" describe. I can only imagine how screwed up, our youth and anyone inexperienced, will be by those books. How many real life romances, partnerships, marriages will break down because of unrealistic sexual expectations. How many mental breakdowns, deaths will happen because "they" (the reader) never feel, experience what those overly explicit authors describe, there by thinking there's something wrong with themselves, that their inadequate, abnormal.
So be careful what you ask publishers, writers to do to their 'normal' stories.
Susan Anderson's No Strings Attached, is a really excellently crafted life and romance story with a bit of hot sex.
I highly recommend this book and this author.

A Strong Outing
By Drstatz
I have long been a fan of Steven Ehrman and have all of the Holmes/Watson books he has written to this point. This one is a strong outing although not quite to the caliber of some of his earlier works. This said, it's a good read and well worth the money spent. I totally recommend it to new readers and the others of the series as well.

Excellent pastiche in the best Doyle tradition.
By Dan - Cleveland, Ohio
Excellent pastiche in the best Doyle tradition. Steven Ehrman is one of my favorite SH authors, with his effective use of period settings, characters and dialogue. The plots are sometimes a bit "out there", but they are always believable and make for a very worthwhile read.

A pretty good Holmes story
By Brian Fenocchio
The author has concocted a pretty good story, one that even Conan Doyle would be proud of. However the author is fairly uneven when it comes to dialogue and setting the scene. The author has a better handle on Holmes than he does on Watson, and since Watson is the lens through which we see Holmes, the author sometimes has trouble conveying the role Watson plays in Holmes life. The less intelligent he makes Watson the crueler Holmes sounds, and when you read the Canon you can feel that Holmes really does care for Watson. This care is not evident in this book. All in all though this book is a good read.

From the Back Cover
Ivan The Terrible (1944/46) was envisaged by its director, Sergei Eisenstein as a trilogy. But, Eisenstein died before begining the third part. Part One had been a resounding success, winning a Stalin prize, but Part Two met with the Kremlin's disfavour and was eventually banned until 1958. Using research gathered from Soviet archives, Yuri Tsivian offers an insight into Eisenstein's grand project. He reconstructs the director's "mental film" that underlies the finished work. The book attempts to follow the train of thought that connect the aesthetic construction and visual design of the film to Eisenstein's knowldege of iconography and painting, psychoanalysis and philosophy, Shakespeare and Balzac - and much more.

About the Author
Yuri Tsivian was born in Latvia and received his Ph.D. from the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinema in 1984. He is Professor of Art History and Cinema Studies at the University of Chicago and author of Silent Witnesses: Russian Films, 1908-1919 (1989), Early Cinema in Russia and its Cultural Reception (1994), and, in collaboration with Yuri Lotman, Dialogues with the Screen (1994).

A psycho-historical trip through Eisenstein's last classic.
By darragh o'donoghue
The story behind 'Ivan The Terrible', Sergei Eisenstein's last masterpiece, is the stuff of cinematic legend. Approached by the Kremlin to make an historical epic emphasising the paralells between the first true Russian Tsar and Stalin, Eisenstein intended his film to be a trilogy. Part 1, narrating Ivan's consolidation of absolute power, was well-received by its patrons, and Eisenstein was awarded the Stalin Prize. Part 2, which focused on Ivan's rule of terror and his increasing reliance on a ruthless secret police, so enraged the hierarchy that it was shelved until after Stalin's death. Part 3 was never made, and Eisenstein, never directing again, died two years later.
This is not the story Yuri Tsivian chooses to tell in his study of 'Ivan' - he is not interested in its historical context (conceived in the heat of World War 2, finished as the USSR emerged as one of the world's two superpowers). He does not discuss 'Ivan' in terms of Soviet culture at the time, the contemporary world of art, or film history in general. He doesn't even really place it within Eisenstein's oeuvre.
'Ivan', though much admired, is probably Eisenstein's least popular film. Its apparent staticness, pictorialism and theatricality seem precious compared to the dynamic energy of silent films like 'Strike' or 'Battleship Potemkin'. Tsivian attempts to galvanise that staticness, to show how the film moves - not by a conventional, linear story, but through ideas, motifs, patterns, correspondances. By using Eisenstein's diaries, notes, production memos, sketches and essays, he traces the contours of the two 'Ivan's - the complete one envisaged in Eisenstein's head, and the abandoned one left to posterity.
This book is too dense to synopsise in a couple of sentences, and the very act of reading it (preferably with the film at hand, although the book is impeccably illustrated) provokes the act of understanding. But there are three basic ideas:
1. Each frame in 'Ivan' has a number of sources from Eisenstein's intellectual canon, be it the writings of Rabelais, Shakespeare, Balzac, Freud or Bakhtin; the art of the Renaissance or Russian murals; the traditions of folklore, alchemy or the carnivalesque; or American films by the likes of Chaplin. These sources feed into the complex system of correspondances that comprise the movie, each character, gesture, location, lighting set-up or composition repeated again and again, but always transformed. Despite this formidable cultural arsenal, the audience is not expected to intellectually grasp all this in one sitting; rather, the film, as all art should according to Eisenstein, uncovers 'primitive' memories buried in our own and in the collective unconscious.
2. Although it is nominally a historical epic, dramatising the major events and characters of their time, and their relationships to one another, 'Ivan' is truly a 'monodrama', Ivan's 'inner monologue', with all other characters and events functioning as doubling aspects of Ivan's self, persona, symbolic matrix or whatever. Tsivian works through Eisentein's complex theories about bisexuality, language, prenatal memory etc. to explain how this works.
3. Eisenstein's old practice of montage, where contrary elements were bound together by editing to create new meaning, is replaced by montage within the image, where contradictions are held in tension in mise-en-scene and acting style.
'Ivan' is a dense and difficult film, and this study is a dense and difficult book, reliant on bold speculation and seemingly capricious connections. If you are new to the film or Eisenstein, I would advise you to start with something more user-friendly (e.g. David Bordwell), and then come back to it. Tsivian is eager to analyse the film's mechanisms and origins rather than its meaning, giving his reader the tools with which to 'work' this forbidding film. In spite of his valiant effort, though, his approach actually makes the film appear even more static: by focusing on the various steps leading up to each frame and its components, he makes it seem like one of those 16th century paintings full of recondite emblems that have to be decoded by an expert before you can understand them. It makes 'Ivan' seem like fine art, not cinema; and, to be frank, that is the experience of watching this awesome but dislikable film.

Deeply insightful!
By findkeep@eburg.com
At the opening of this book Tsivian cites "Ivan the Terrible Parts I and II" as one of the most complex films ever made. by it's end, he has justified that statement. His book is a dense, incisive, and deeply insightful look at a great film. Also, it is a very fast read (I recieved and finished it in a period of a few hours). Above all the book serves as a telling detail of Eisenstein's brilliance. He was, after all, a director who's films were always difficult to approach, harder still to understand, but hardest to appreciate. If only Tsivian would write a similiar companion piece to "Alexander Nevsky."
