Get Your Pulp On!

Ki-Gor was the most successful Tarzan knock off. Like Tarzan, he is a white jungle lord in an Africa that bears little resemblance to reality. Ki-Gor is almost always accompanied by his beautiful redheaded bride, Helene, who wears what amounts to a leopard skin bikini, and N'Gesso, a pygmy warrior chief. Ki-Gor tended to meet more exotic foes than did Tarzan. In the first story, "Seven Skulls Of L'Gonda", the trio encounters a tribe of scantily clad Amazons in the midst of a war against a nearby patriarchal tribe. The men of the Amazon's tribe are weak, unimposing vegetarians. Naturally the queen of the Amazons has carnal designs on studly Ki-Gor.
Par for the course Helene falls into the hands of male evil doers. Here is what happens in perhaps the most racy passage in either story, "Instead of tying her to a post, Tykar had a warrior get on either side of Helene and pull outward on her arms. Thus she was held painfully erect, virtually spread eagle in the thin air for it was necessary for her to brace her legs wide to resist the brutal tug of the blacks.
""Strip her!"" commanded Tykar, his narrowed eyes running over her slim figure."

Needless to say our fair maiden is rescued before the metal studded flail begins to work on her sun bronzed white flesh. The second story, "Slave of The Jackal Priestess" is more conventional, with Ki-Gor and friends pushed to the limit by a scheming, legless adventurer and a very sexy, very power hungry black woman. Here Helene is also menaced, primarily by a witch doctor who wants to take Ki-Gor's bride for his own.

What you get out of these stories pretty much depends upon your expectations.If you are a fan of pulp literature, and have a weakness for jungle adventure, these stories will appeal to you. Keep in mind the era in which they were written. In no way what so ever are these stories "politically correct." However, if you can read past casual racist and sexist attitudes, there is much to admire in these compulsively readable tales.

Jim Schutze combines natural details about the sawgrass marshes and roaring alligators of the area south of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with keen observations about the fantasy lives of teenagers hooked on surfing, steroids, and instant gratification, to paint a harrowing picture of seven suburban kids who slide all too easily into moral depravity. At the heart of his tale is a kind of love triangle: the "bully," his best friend Marty, and Marty's girlfriend, who fiercely desires to rescue Marty from a strangely destructive friendship with strong homosexual undertones. Schutze's account of the aftermath of the murder includes interesting details on how the police skillfully lured confessions from the kids involved. I found the writing to have a few inconsistencies, and I wished the author had provided more background about how he reconstructed the dialogue, but those are small reservations about an excellent book overall.

In 1993, seven young people from the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, area joined together to kill Bobby Kent, an acquaintance of them all. In the group were Marty Puccio, Bobby's lifelong friend; Lisa Connelly, a sullen and overweight girl obsessed with Marty, her first boyfriend; and Alice (Ali) Slay, a former teenage prostitute and Bobby's chief sexual partner. All seven were white and middle-class, described by one detective as "mall-rat wannabes," and all were indulged by their parents. Bobby was a latent homosexual and a sadist, the latter tendency increased by heavy use of steroids. He regularly beat Marty and Ali and delighted in teasing and abusing the mentally handicapped. The murder plot was hatched by Lisa, and Marty was one of the major participants, two of whom turned state's evidence. The other five were found guilty, with sentences ranging from death (Marty) to life (Lisa) and other long prison terms. Houston Chronicle staffer Schutze (Cauldron of Blood) has captured the mindset of the intellectually and emotionally shallow killers: far from feeling remorse or regret, without exception they admitted to feeling put upon, if not victimized, by the law and its agents. Victim, perpetrators equally unlikeable

The book held my interest, but as much as I hate to say this about a murder victim, I didn't have much sympathy for Bobby Kent. This guy would've wound up dead or in prison sooner or later.

The perpetrators were equally worthy of contempt. These kids are totally lacking in morals or ambition. It's depressing to think that they represent the future of this country.

The parents of these perps are just as guilty. They allowed their minor kids to drop out of school and not work, while they continued to support them, bought them cars and looked the other way as they used/sold drugs, prostituted themselves, etc. Ali Willis' parents were unbelievable: they let that girl do whatever she wanted because they were afraid of her tantrums...please! And SHE has a CHILD? The poor kid!

Fred and Farah Kent seemed to think their son was some sort of saint, while Marty Puccio's parents seemed too busy to notice that their son was being abused physically and psychologically.

It wasn't Lisa Connelly's weight that boys found unattactive, but her lousy attitude, her slovenliness and her temper tantrums. I would like to have a dollar for every time she was described in the book as "sullen." She came off as pathetic, willing to stay with someone who abused her both physically and emotionally (and who let his buddy do the same). I guess when you get down to brass tacks, no guy really respects a girl who doesn't respect herself. I feel sorry for her daughter by Puccio, Megan. That kid isn't swimming in a very good gene pool.

The fact that Connelly (and her family) didn't seem to grasp what she had done made me wish I could reach into the book and slap her. She should have gotten the death penalty as well.

I cannot believe that Marty Puccio's death sentence has been commuted to a life sentence. It appears that the lives of people like him (and Rod Ferrell, the subject of Aphrodite Jones' "The Embrace") are deemed by the Florida courts to have more value than than those of their victims.

Recommended, but unsettling

The story is riveting, but truly unsettling. It's hard to believe there is a generation of young people that could be like this and do what they did. However, the author does a fine job of filling in the family histories, giving a glimpse of why these young people could veer off course. The author's style is quite good, in that the action is quite disjointed, but he amazingly presents it in a fast-paced manner without leaving the reader wondering what's going on or who's who. One minor complaint is that the author often adopts the language and vernacular of the young people he documents. This is a shame, as it indicates the environment that our culture has become (and in which the characters in this story were raised), even in such an otherwise astonishly well-written and documented book

Mere exploitation, but good and thorough exploitation

This is pure true crime, no fiction and only limited analysis. The story really is tragic and the kids are ignorant as hell. It is a quick read but the lesson we learn about these kids devaluating life is an important one. Jim Schutze's writing is concise and he doesn't waste a single line on anything but facts until the end. I recommend the book because the story should be told and Jim Schutze does a great job telling it. I love his last line.

Philip A. Hastings is Professor of Marine Biology and Curator of Marine Vertebrates at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. His studies include the systematics and phylogeny of fishes, marine biogeography, ecology and behavioral evolution of fishes, and marine conservation biology.

H. J. Walker, Jr., is a Senior Museum Scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. His research and interests include the taxonomy, systematics, and zoogeography of marine fishes and the observation of these fishes in their natural environments.

Perfect companion for an Ichthyology course

I am currently teaching an Ichthyology course, and this is the book that I used as required reading. It is great for classes, particularly because the figures are based on preserved specimens. This makes it an invaluable resource for students because it serves as an excellent reference for how real preserved specimens of fishes look, particularly for the lineages of fishes one may potentially include in a lab. No it does not provide detailed information for all 500+ families of fishes, but that is certainly not the goal of this book. It is absolutely the perfect companion for an Ichthyology course that is focused on the evolution and biodiversity of fishes.

I highly recommended this book to anyone that teaches courses on the biodiversity of fishes, or as a general reference. Having a focus on preserved specimens alone makes it an interesting and unique addition as an ichthyology resource.

I have been studying fish biology for twenty years, and I teach the ichthyology class at a large state university. I cannot convey how much I like this book or how excited I was after reading it. There are few fully developed resources for ichthyology classes. There are a few ichthyology textbooks that are adequate, but they just don't cover the material that I want to cover in my class. And forget about any resources for the laboratory component of my class beyond a dogfish dissection guide. Well this book has changed all of that. This book is, without exaggeration, exactly the book I need for my ichthyology lab. This will be the one required text that I have the students purchase for future ichthyology classes (and the price is absolutely reasonable to downright cheap). This is an excellent reference, and I love the use of high quality photos of real preserved specimens. When you are teaching a specimen-based class having these real photos of preserved specimens is critical and it counts for a lot. Beyond the images, the text provides diagnostic characters for hundreds of families as well as a diversity of natural history, biology, and evolutionary information (including a vast literature cited) that students will love. Beyond an ichthyology class, this is also a great resource for training undergraduates starting in my lab. I can hand them a specimen, and they can work through the pictures to get close to a family-level identification, eventually using the diagnostic features to identify the fish's family. It is a large commitment to develop a working knowledge of fish families, but this book goes a long way toward giving new researchers the building blocks necessary to create that foundation. I cannot say enough great things about the book. It is an absolute must have for any professor or student interested in ichthyology or anyone interested in the diversity of fishes. I recommend it without any reservations.

An Instant Classic

As a self-identified naturalist, I buy a lot of zoological guides. I expected this book to be like a traditional field guide with some rough identification hints and a little bit of natural history. It is so much more than I expected. It does a fantastic job of showing the key characters for many of the group. Better yet, it actually does this on photos of actual specimens rather than drawings, which makes it much more valuable because drawings can be so idealized. But what really surprised me was how this book actually allowed me to get into the literature on fishes better. I have had the hardcopy book for a couple of months now, and I have used it to explore some groups that I knew nothing about. It provides easy access to a somewhat complicated literature. On a related note, what I think is particularly great about this book is that the authors have presented the work such that it is somewhat immune to the ongoing higher-level changes in fish classification. By focusing on the family level for the core information and providing references to recent literature at the family level and above, the book will remain useful and great for fish identification for the next 10 years. Anyone interested in the diversity, evolution, and natural history of fishes should buy this book; it will be a classic!

On the publication quality side, the hardcover is great. I worried that it would be a dust jacket covered book, which would be terrible for laboratory or field use. Instead it is a true printed on hardcover. The color printing is high quality, emphasizing the preserved colors of the diversity of fishes (which greatly aids identification...). The text is remarkably error free and the print quality is fantastic.

Eye-Popping , Entertaining & Educational

I'm telling all my friends about this book. It's the most complete, in-depth book on 4-wheeling I've ever read. It's packed with so many eye-popping color photos, at times, I thought I was actually on the trail. Jim Allen's down-home style had me laughing out loud. Whether you've been 4-wheeling for years or just bought your first SUV, you won't be able to put this book down.
The 224-page book covers everthing you need to know before, during and after 4-wheeling. Topics include: attitudes and ethics, preparation, emergencies, beginner to advanced mechanics, tires, traction, vehicle modifications, tools, equipment, recovery techniques, navigation and much more. In his unique, tongue-in-cheek style, Allen talks about testosterone poisoning, Chop Suey Mud, vehicular hemorrhages, the battle for traction, what's the diff, manhandling, and the winching hall of shame. You'll learn such things as when anti-lock brakes are dangerous, what to do when a spotter holds up two clenched fists, how to safely step over a winch cable and how to avoid embarrassment by having that one piece of equipment every 4x4 should have.
Don't miss this chance to capitalize on Allen's 28 years of 4-wheeling experience. A lot of info, maybe not all useful

This is a good book. It contains a lot of information, although not all of it is useful. This is a great book for someone just getting into four wheeling.

My personal thoughts are that this book should have been Jeep or LandRover specific (Those are the authors obvious favorites) instead of trying to be all encompassing of 4x4's. Basically, there was not enought specific information on any type of area or vehicle, and not enough gereral information. The author seemed stuck somewhere inbetween, making this book not really good for either use.

I did read the book cover to cover, so I guess it couldnt have been that bad either. I gave it four stars because it did have some info and was a pleasant book to read.

Jim Allen's 4-Wheeler's Bible

Jim Allen's casual style will keep the seasoned off-roader's turning pages without overwhelming or intimidating the new comers.
The 4-Wheeler's Bible doesn't simply proclaim a technique "right" but explains the reasoning behind it. The vehicle and trail shots are not the typical 4x4 book's fluff, but are excellent tools in demonstrating both good and bad driving techniques. Jim Allen spends as much time documenting and illustrating the common mistakes as he does the proper techniques, in doing so he allows the reader to not only learn from his experience but from other peoples mistakes (I know I'd much rather learn from someone else's crunched bumper or seared drive shaft than my own).

This book should be required reading in high school. I have 3 friends who left God's green earth by suicide and I don't think any of them would have done so if they knew and practiced what Dr. Leaf explains in this book. We MUST learn to focus on the positive side of our lives rather than focusing on the bad! Obviously we have all suffered thru something if not ALOT! We still have the Awesome Promises of God to encourage us and give us hope! What you focus on is what you will become! I nearly became a casualty myself after losing my wife to bad circumstances and focusing on the negatives and would have, could have, should have... Dr. Leaf saved my LIFE with her many years of research! No longer do I focus on the negatives for more than a few minutes as God is not through with me yet and he came so that I would have life and life more abundantly! PLEASE read this book and learn what your "Stinking Thinking" is doing to your body, mind and soul! YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!!! HALLELUJAH!!!

Awesome Book!!!

My father in law let me borrow this book to read, and it has helped so much with my anxiety. I just had to buy my own copy because I needed to go back and reread. As anyone knows who suffers from anxiety you have to retrain your brain. Dr Leaf has an awesome way of explaining things and she rely' s on The Great Physicians word to do it; we cannot over come anything without Jesus Christ!! Would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from anxiety!!!

Hope for Creating Right-Thinking Patterns

This book is well written from a knowledgeable scientific perspective and has a fair number of schematics for helping to explain the concepts. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The results of wrong-thinking are easily explained in light of the types and amounts of chemicals that are released into our systems, with far-reaching consequences at the DNA level...which Ms. Leaf also explains are easily reversible as we unravel and resolve the thought processes that got us there in the first place.

She has presented her material in an easy-to-understand and engaging manner and inspires hope in the heart.

I adore the author

Any student who is taking analysis/advanced calculus course should read chapter 2 of this book, especially if he is confused or is struggling on the excellent but relatively abstract/concise texts of Rudin, Apostal, Bartle, Marsden et al. I've never seen a book which can explain the concept of Jacobian and Inplicit function theory in such a clear way!!

great for engineering and non-theoretical science majors

I learned from this book during my sophomore year advanced calculus class. The best thing about this book -- answers to all the problems are included. What a novel idea -- answers! I can't speak for others, but I can still remember doing problem after problem from this book and knowing that I could always check my understanding, or lack understanding, of the material by checking my work against the answers.

As to why do I think this book is for engineers and non-theoretical science majors? Very simple, it does *not* cover real analysis as the books by Rudin, Shilov or Johnsonbaugh and Pfaffenberger (my favorite). These other books follow a very traditional approach -- axioms, lemmas, theorems, corollaries. Kaplan's book presents all the mathematics that an engineer, etc. will typically need and with a clear explanation. You won't find delta-epsilon proofs here, but you will find multi-variate calculus, vector differential and integral calculus, orthogonal functions and expansions (Fourier series), complex variables, and ODEs and PDEs. Everything is covered. The explanations are generally very good. There are examples, and of course, answers to the problems are included.

You can think of this book as a Schaum's Outline on Advanced Calculus, but with real explanations, not just statements. I'm not knocking Schaum's Outlines. I own several of them.

great didatic

I study this book entirely in a calculus review. The points are:
1- The exposition is clear and didatic even in points difficults and delicates
2- The sections are short and with exercises in growing level of dificulty with much adequates hints
3- It's necessary to resolve all (or half all) exercises because there are many new stuff there
4- There are responses to all exercises with is good for self study (like mine)
5- There are very litlle typos
6- My only question is that the book would have more exercises
(I supply this doing exercises of other books like M.Boas)
So I recommend this book based in my (good) experience
