Philippe Guillemot is a historian specialized in battles of East Europe during the Second World War. He is the author of Hungary 44-45 of the series "Of Battles and of Men" from "Histories and Collections".

The 6th PzA tries to retake Hungary

The first two chapters present an accurate appraisal of the military and political situation facing Germany in late 1944. The author lists all the recent setbacks from Operation Bagration to Finland and Bulgaria leaving the Axis Alliance to Romania defecting to the Soviet side and much more. Hitler was obsessed in keeping Hungary with him regardless of the costs.
The battle coverage begins with the Soviets sweeping through Romania and Yugoslavia on their way to Hungary. The coverage slows when the Soviets cross into Hungary and attack Debrecen before seizing Budapest. The section on Budapest was relatively large but the fighting west of Budapest and the Danube and near Lake Balaton was even larger and included coverage of the series of Operation Konrads, Operation Suwind and Operation Spring Awakening which takes you through the end of February, 1945.
According to the author, the Konrad Operations is the Ardennes Offensive in the East but on a smaller scale. Like the Ardennes, it was Hitler's last desperate gamble to break the Soviet advance. Like the Ardennes it also had bitter fighting and much destruction but once again Germany's enemy was just too strong. This story is told from the German viewpoint but considerable Soviet info is included.
In addition to the narrative which appears to be a translation, the author presents 18 color maps of the different battles that show the deployments of both sides as well as axes of attack. These maps were good and should help the reader follow the action. They're good enough to use when reading other books on the battle for Hungary.
Along with the maps are many photos. The photo quality on many has deteriorated but the pictures are still viewable and they are excellent from a military standpoint. Some of the photos were taken during battle and the rest show the destruction that is wrought from war. Also included are a number of illustrations of panzers and planes from both sides that will interest some people. If that's not enough, a number of German uniforms are squeezed in.
There are a number of tables showing the progression of panzers the Germans lost from the Ardennes Offensive to the end of Feb 1945. There are Orders of Battle for AGS including Hungarian units and the 2nd UF and 3rd UF on the Soviet side. The Soviets clearly had the superior forces.
If you like this book but want more, let me suggest two other books. Rudolf Pencz's "For the Homeland" which covers the fighting in southern Hungary during this period and will add to your understanding. If a comprehensive story is wanted then Georg Maier's huge tome "Drama Between Budapest and Vienna" is an excellent choice.
The book is the size of an Osprey Campaign with only 80 pages. Mr Guillemot has packed a lot of operational details in these few pages. A concise though not complete story, great 2-D maps, interesting photos makes for a worthy primer for new and casual students of the war.

Mixed Bag

This book is a mixed bag. It is comparable to the Osprey series in outlook although it has a cheaper magazine feel. The story never goes into any real depth but covers its subject in broad strokes. The subject is interesting enough and so far poorly covered in English the battles of the Hungarian plain and Budapest but this book doesn't go much further than say Wikipedia.
Pros:
It has plenty of pictures and color plates that are helpful for modelers along with a number of pictures of men and uniforms and having so many of these I bring it up to 2 stars since the quality of text merits little more than 1 star.
Cons:
Editing and proofreading is terrible. The original clearly written in French seems to have gone through a computer translation with minimal editing and proofreading. Some maps are funny, like on page 7 where some countries are in English and others in French. Map on page 13 is in French entirely (Unit�s hongroises etc), words are cut in the most unusual places, like the word "the" (page 37 becomes t - and -he in the second line and the text is very poor in places:
Without doubt, this is also largely unknown last "charge" by the garrison, takes its place amongst history's bloodiest military assaults like those of sucicidal Japanese banzai attacks or the first wave to hit Omaha beach.

Conclusion:
Source material of poor quality, writing and editing that is help along with a lot of pictures in a magazine format. I for one will not be looking for more titles in the same series.

Interesting and informative book

I hate to admit it but I don't know much about Hungarian Campaign of 1944-45 in any detail. I know Operation Konrad a bit but only from playing a war game long ago and read about it from books that covered it as part of a greater whole. I know that Heinz Gurderian probably broke several blood vessels over it but not much in the general detail that this book provided. So the book definitely proves to be an introduction to this campaign for me. And it proves to be quite informative and educational as well. The book proves to be somewhat dryly written, it got colorful maps, nice order of the battle charts and many photographs. Although the narrative is bit on the dry side, it was fairly written, obviously the author tries to strike a balance between the German and the Soviet sides. He must have done quite a bit of research since these narrative contains on the page footnotes for clarification. And he does a pretty good job trying to explained the situations at hand. Not knowing enough on the subject matter, I cannot say if there were any errors in his narrative or his order of the battle charts but it does look very complete. On page 72, he even compared the armor strength of four SS Panzer Divisions from Normandy to Konrad in three stages (Normandy, Ardennes, Konrad). I'll let one of you out there who like to nitpick these things apart to figure out how truly accurate the author's figures are. So for an introductory book on this subject, I found the book to be most satisfactory and until I know more, I'll take what in the book as accurate account. The previous reviewer who appears to know this subject well did not complaint about the narrative nor the charts and maps so that is another confirmation that I can rely on this book.
The reason why this book didn't' get the full five stars has to do with three things. On page 7, there is a map of Europe and I am at loss exactly what time period this map is suppose to show. The Polish borders reflects post 1945 lines but Romania got her 1942 borders. Germany's border do includes Austria but not East Prussia. Schizophrenia usually appears in human beings, not on a map! Second, as the previous reviewer wrote, many of the reproduction of photos proves to be totally inept. It look like the pixels in these photos are enlarge too much and all you see is distortion. Its a pretty poor effort overall. Finally, I kind of take exception to comparing the Siege of Budapest to Stalingrad. The author stated that 38,000 civilians died during the siege out of 800,000 civilians. If you asked me, that is pretty low numbers compared to Stalingrad or worst Leningrad and Warsaw ratios. Its a poor comparison, more hype then fact.
So overall, I thought this was a pretty good book for someone like me who don't have much exposure to the Hungarian campaign of 1944-45. It is interesting to note that even up March of 1945, only two months away from end of World War II in Europe, Germany was still conducting offensive operations in this sector. No wonder they had nothing left when their own capital was about get hit.
