*************PREMISE**************
A British woman (Jane) meets a French billionaire (Xavier) while on vacation and they have an affair. On the last day of her vacation, Xavier's assistant lets Jane know that she's just one of many women Xavier has on tap. By this time, Jane is already in love with Xavier and flees back to England, humiliated, and intends never to see Xavier again. Except she finds out that she's pregnant.

Due to a codicil in Xavier's late father's will, Xavier's children cannot inherit if they are born out of wedlock, so Xavier and Jane marry for the sake of the child.

*************ISSUES****************
I have three issues with the book.
1. Xavier's parents had a horrible marriage and after his mother's death, his father hated the thought of marriage so much he refused to remarry, yet he included a codicil to force his son to marry. I get that their lineage was important, but it just seems weird a father who hates marriage writing a codicil like that.

2. As another reviewer wrote, the section of the book where Jane is forcing herself to give Xavier the cold shoulder started getting on my nerves after a while. I know we needed it develop tension between the characters, but it really did start to get on my nerves when it went on for page after page after page.

3. This woman is pregnant, her husband is a billionaire and there is never a mention of her seeing a doctor, getting a sonogram or anything. Not even prenatal vitamins. Come on. Shouldn't she have had at least a check up. The first time he sees her in 4 months, she faints in front of him, she tells him she'd pregnant, and he doesn't ask if she's ok, if she needs a OB/GYN or something? Never once asks if the baby is healthy? And this is a man who is in desperate need of an heir? Wouldn't he want to make sure that everything is in tip top shape? I don't know, but that scenario bothered me.

Other than those issues, I liked this book. The woman was independent, and wasn't a doormat, and the man was a definite alpha male without coming across as being a jackass or by being verbally abusive as they are in so many of these Harlequin Presents books. They are both pretty likeable, even though they could be irritating at times.

If you are looking for a lot of tension and conflict, this is not the book for you. This is a book about a couple forced together and who try to work out their respective situations to the best of their abilities while both trying to save face in a difficult situation.

A nice read I wholeheartedly recommend. Very sweet.

Excellent - Buy This Book

What I can I say? This new writer did a wonderful job with the storyline. It was very believable and realistic, yet still romantic. The two main characters have a sizzling chemistry from the moment they meet and it was maintained throughout the entire story. Both were flawed but very likeable, especially the hero. The setting was vivid and romantic and the plot flowed very well, although there were a few parts that were frustrating. However, it was not ridiculously drawn out so as to overpower a great plot.

It is refreshing to read something for a change under the harlequin title, done with a sort of old approach, dressed and spiced up so as to make it refreshing. It kept me reading until 3 am and I had to go to work the same day. Now that has to be a really good book!

I say great job to Ms. Green for such a wonderful first effort. I hope she keeps up the good work and show those other boring, no-imagination harlequin writers how a real romance should be written.

I enjoyed this one very much

When you are in the mood for an HP then this is as good as they get. Of course the H was alpha with issues and the h was innocent and probably not up to the challenge of handling him and his past. Anyway the story moves along nicely and although there is the period of celibacy, it built up the tension quite nicely between the 2 main characters. As I said if you are in the mood for this type of romance then this is well worth reading.

THE existentialist play

As an actor/aspiring playwrite/existentialist I figured this was right up my alley. It was. I borrowed No Exit a while ago, and read it straight through twice (once during an important math class, and later during chemestry). I'm buying my own copy now. Don't just read this (or anything...especially plays) only once! Do you think Paul McCartney only listened to Stevie Wonder once? (wink to anyone who can identify this quote) This is a great play, even if you're not into reading plays, or not into philosophy. The Bauhaus theatre dictum of form following function is great to keep in mind, as this is similar to didactic theatre. The post before mine is a bit misleading in writing it off as 'weird' and an unconventional view of hell. It could be both things if you want to stay in the shallow end all of your life. No Exit is best read with an understanding of the anti-naturalism, but this is only to understand why it's 'weird' and is not nessesary. I don't want to tell you how to interperate the play or anything, so I won't go into why it is not an unconventional view of hell. If you want to know, or discuss the play (or pretty much any other play/theory) IM me on AIM: Digestingtrevor or Email me at Don't_spam_spit@the-cowboy.com Just remove 'don't spam' from it. Know also Sartre was not primarilly a playwrite. He was a prominant existentialist philosopher/essayist, but turned to playwriting (thank god[though he won't respond!]) as a new medium for expression. He's also quite good as a playwrite for a philosopher! REALLY good! It's great to be frustrated with the characters and really feel like you are going insane. (possibly the birth of reality TV? it's funny how much it is like the real world.) This is a GREAT read for the Arist(of all mediums),philosopher,and the person who just wants to read something cool. I suggest this book to all different types of people, and they all love it. You can easilly read this with no desire to put any interperative thought into it, and love it just as much as if you want to delve into it's infinate levels of meaning and relevance. It is both entertaining and enlightening.

If you want to gently progress from Western medical acupuncture into a working knowledge of TCM, the second book on Basic Theories would be a good place to start. -- JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists), Dr Val Hopwood, Course Director This is another book in the series International Acupuncture Textbooks and, as such, is very much up to standard. It is beautifully produced, carefully laid out and offers a very complete view of TCM diagnostics. It is also very reasonably priced... Combining practical instruction with helpfully detailed theory, this authoritative textbook is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels. I would not hesitate to recommend it. It may take a while to assimilate but it really is written so well that any physiotherapist could make sense of it and begin to make their acupuncture treatments certainly more subtle and sophisticated but, most importantly, more effective. -- JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association fo Chartered Physiotherapists), Dr Val Hopwood, Course Director Combining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, complied by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels... This drawback is largely compensated for by the consistent use of clear tables that facilitate both learning and quick reference. Despite the drawback of the simplification inherent in such texts, some of the chapters are excellent. The chapter on emotions and elements in Basic Theories, for example, is particularly good, as is the chapter on bianzheng in the Diagnostic volume. The chapters on pulse and tongue are also well-written, and designed for quick navigation to allow mere seconds to access, for example, the description and significance of a tense pulse or a grey tongue coating. As such...These texts offer simple, portable, concise and well-structured information that is consistent with the TCM literature already available. On occasion, refreshingly original insights come from the teaching experience of the authors. Whilst this series does not necessarily offer an educational panacea, it may just offer what is missing on the market - an affordable, accurate and accessible series of texts written specifically for a Western mindset and understanding. If the rest of this series of text books are as good as the two reviewed here, (Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine and Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine), Singing Dragon Textbooks will definitely become part of the recommended reading of Chinese medicine courses; student in the early stages of their TCM studies o those that require a fresh angle or portable material for revision should certainly consider buying them. -- Journal of Chinese Medicine

"The Great Lobster Cookbook" is filled with gorgeous photos of the many dishes one could prepare. Some are relatively easy to make while others are definitely for when you entertain. I love the fact that this treasure trove of recipes includes the simple recipes for lighter meals. The Lobster 101 section is really useful to find tips, such as "How to buy and store lobster" or "How to cook lobster".

Alleyn's first visit to New Zealand

Roderick Alleyn of New Scotland Yard is visiting New Zealand on holiday for health reasons in 1937 - a very long journey in distance, then and now, and in those days by sea voyage. He'll be away from Fox, Bailey, Thompson, and the rest of his team for quite a while - more than 3 months in New Zealand itself. The story opens during a long train trip across South Island with some of his fellow passengers from the ship - the Carolyn Dacres English Comedy Company.
Ms. Dacres is the sparkling leading lady; her middle-aged, humdrum husband, Alfred Meyer, runs the business end of the company. Hailey Hambledon, Carolyn's handsome leading man, wants her to arrange a divorce with Meyer and marry him. Carolyn refuses, claiming religious scruples; it's hard to say if Carolyn loves Hailey, or is merely being diplomatic. Some of the character actors have been gambling heavily. Valerie Ganes, a mediocre actress (a dilettante with a rich father) suffered the loss of a large amount of cash, but isn't keen on even a quasi-official investigation. Meyer's business partner, Mason, seems habitually worried about money.
Meyer *seems* oblivious to all this, and after a successful run in Middleton (fictional city), arranges an elaborate birthday party for Carolyn, with an eye toward publicity, and including a flashy gimmick of lowering a huge champagne bottle from the rafters. But someone apparently decides to launch a venture by aiming the bottle at Meyer's head.
At this point in his career, Alleyn had only had one murder case entangled with the world of the theatre - _Enter a Murderer_, which occurred 2 years before this story opens - so the matter of the earlier case (and the name of the murderer) are mentioned several times. In fact, a character actress in the company was a minor character in the earlier book. While one can enjoy and follow the plot of _Vintage Murder_ without having read the earlier story, it has added depth after reading the earlier book - and if they're read out of order, the solution of the earlier book is given in the 1st chapter of this book.
While this is only the second 'theatrical' case Alleyn investigated, several more were to come, and other changes took place shortly after the events in this book. Taking ship for the return journey to England as _Artists in Crime_, the next book, opened, Alleyn was to meet Agatha Troy for the first time. :)

Entertaining Novel Marred by Patronizing Racism

Like her contemporaries Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh possessed a sort of patronizing racism typical of the “British Empire” mentality. Sayers was very mild; Christie would shake hers after the horrors of World War II; but Marsh persisted in it throughout her career, and it is particularly noticeable when she writes about the Maori of her native New Zealand, which is the setting for her fifth novel, VINTAGE MURDER.

Today Marsh is best recalled as a writer, but she was also a professional stage actress and director, and once again she gives her story a theatrical setting, with Alleyn unexpectedly involved with a touring theatrical company that stars noted actress Caroline Dakers. Although Alleyn is on a long vacation after an unspecified illness, Miss Dakers herself reaches out to him when her husband and manager declares someone has tried to murder him—and then, in almost the same breath, a supporting actress announces she has been robbed of a large sum of money. Most of the company (including Susan Max, who we met in ENTER A MURDERER) suspect the attempted murder was really an accident, and the robbed actress suddenly seems unwilling to pursue the matter of her stolen cash—but crime strikes again in a particularly bizarre way when Alleyn is invited to attend Miss Daker’s birthday party in the aftermath of a sold out performance.

In telling her story, Marsh has characters state that there is no “color barrier” in New Zealand, but at the same time presents Dr. Te Pokiha, an extremely Anglicized, high caste Maori who is nonetheless intrinsically “savage.” By 1930s standards Marsh’s attitudes are enlightened, but in the modern world it is an unattractive gloss. The novel is further marred by a not-entirely-successful denouement. Even so, Marsh knows how to cast a spell, and she captures the off-stage drama of the theatrical world she knew so well and she also endows New Zealand with an impressive literary beauty. Worth reading for those points alone.

A late train, a provincial theater, a great actress

This one is mixed, though let me say from the outset, it's worth reading.

The bad, or at least not-so-good?

The center of this mystery drains your energy, possibly in part because of the almost Tolstoyesque proliferation of characters - almost, because nobody in this novel has a half-dozen nicknames you have to keep straight. There is also a heavy and almost repetitive ladling of timetables and alibis that a more stringent editor might have pared down.

Too, you might get a bit tired of the way the New Zealand police force sucks up to Alleyn, especially since he seems never to be wholly on top of his form. (As another reviewer says, except in one letter from Alleyn, there's no Fox to act as an intelligent sounding board. When at his boss's side, Fox serves to reveal Alleyn's sharpness, and without Fox, much of that sharpness can't surface.)

The good side?

There are moments that bring the story to life. Amazon and the publisher have enabled the "search in this book" feature above: search on `fascination train' without the single quotes and read the page. Late-night, cross-country passenger train rides are rare in my country, the US, but I've been on a couple, and Marsh clearly has captured the essence.

Plus, the backstage world is well depicted - you get to see a little about how the technical side of theater lives and breathes. The novel revolves around a fabricated tech "accident" and there's a bit of foreshadowing that brings depth to a later statement, "when men are working aloft. I remember the stage-manager told me the [stage] hands always have their tools tied to their wrists." The reality of backstage is that when everything is perfect, nobody really notices - and when something goes awry, the stagehands could not feel worse.

There is also a crystal moment between Alleyn and Carolyn Dacres, a picnic excursion that the smitten Alleyn orchestrates to soften the usual grilling session. Here, Marsh expresses both the essential goodness (and grief) of the actress and the essential attraction of the New Zealand back country.

There are also memorably complex characters. Is it coincidence that surname of the Oxford-educated Maori physician, Dr. Rangi Te Pokiha, is about as close as you can get to "paheka," the Maori name for European settlers on the ranges of their land? And don't miss St. John Ackroyd, the acrid comedian.

And the last lines of the book, quoting a letter from Miss Dacres to Alleyn sent to him after all has been said and done, presents a touchingly human denouement.

I guess this is a roundabout way of saying, all Marsh is good; some are better than this; but this has fine moments.

Some of these work great, some not so much..

I purchased this book in order to make my own natural cleaners rather than buying the commercial ones at the healthfood stores in order to save money. Initially you'll have to spend some money on buying essential oils(these cost the most) and so forth.
I have tried several of the recipes. The Tough Dirt & Grease floor cleaner works great. I've also tried a couple of the different copper cleaners on my Revereware pots and both worked great.
The castille based dish soap, I'm not too crazy about for several reasons, 1. the water turns white 2. it doesn't suds up much and 3. if you don't towel dry your glasses they look cloudy. I used Desert Essence castile soap with tea tree oil the first time and the second time I use Dr Bronners and both had the same results. My hands don't dry out but that didn't really balance out having to towel dry every dish. So I guess I'll be using BioKleens' dish soap again.
The overnight toilet bowl cleaner was just the same as adding plain borax, letting it sit for an hour or overnight and scrubing with a brush it just smelled nicer due to the essential oils.
Basically it came down to this: borax, washing soda, baking soda, white vinegar and castile soap, which all of us green cleaners keep on hand this book just tells you what essential oils to add to the mixture.
The author also has a section about drying your own herbs to make scouring powders and such. Baking soda is a fairly good scouring powder on it's own.
It does have very handy tips on how to clean everything in your house except for leather furniture.
You can find almost all of these recipes online on different green sites, but it is nice to have handy in a little book that tucks nicely away in the cleaning cabinet.
The index is rather confusing, if you are looking for say scouring powder it won't be listed under scouring powders, you would have to look under bathroom cleaners for them.
Overall the book is okay, but I guess I was hoping for more than just adding essential oils to everything.

More good than bad in this handy little book

I bought this book looking for natural cleaning solutions, not necessarily cost-effective cleaning solutions. In that respect, it has met my expectations. Please note that on pages 26 & 27, the author includes a list of herbs and their beneficial properties, which comes in handy when you are substituting herbs and oils for the recipes (hint: this means you do not have to buy every single essential oil or herb listed in the book. For example, you can substitute Ginger for Lemongrass, etc). So far:

Recipes I have been impressed with:
1. pg 33: Citrus Sparkle Automatic Dishwasher Powder (I add table salt to the recipe and use white vinegar in the rinse compartment to cut back on the white residue stuck to the dishes)
2. pg 50: Tough Dirt and Grease Formula floor cleaner
3. pg 64: Germs-Be-Gone Toilet Cleaner
4. pg 104: Lemon Fresh Dust Buster (substituted "Lemon Balm" tea with black tea and it worked just fine)
5. pg 132: All-Purpose Citrus Wall Cleaner (even dried blood came off the wall with this)
6. pg 143: Heavy-Duty Herbal Carpet Steamer Formula
7. pg 182: Fruity Travel Wipes

Recipes I have been not-so-impressed with:
1. pg 58: Mold Deterrent
2. pg 168: Mold and Mildew Destroyer (seems like 10% bleach solution is still the best deterrent and destroyer for mold... sigh...)
3. All of the laundry detergent recipes. They are almost the same recipes you can find online, but the author directs you to use much more of it. Someone new to green cleaning might not realize that there are more economic (and still natural) alternatives out there.

Bottom Line: I have deducted one star for the recipes that I have found not up to par. However, if you are looking for a simple green-cleaning book that will meet many of your needs, this book should be a good start.

I love this book!

This book contains recipes for any cleaning product a person could ever want to use around their home, including carpet shampoo, laundry soap, garden and pest control (even deer), potpourri and sachets, tarnish remover, wood cleaners and polishes, computers and office equipment, oven cleaner, BBQ grills, wicker, cars, exterior siding (including stone and brick), and garden tools! And all of the ingredients are completely nontoxic. Not only that, it teaches you HOW to do the jobs and properly care for your home and items you own. It is an excellent all-around instruction book for green housekeeping in every sense.

Gormley does a good job of focusing on her subject's spiritual life while providing a solid biographical context against which to examine it. His personal relationships, from his troubled one with his father, to his late-in-life marriage to Joy Davidman, are thoroughly explored, both for their import for him as a Christian, and as a writer. Other influences on his work are also discussed. Gormley describes Lewis's relationship with J.R.R. Tolkien, who did not like the "Narnia" books, and with other members of his writers' group, the Inklings, who played integral parts in his life. Quotes from the subject, his family, and friends lend a certain intimacy to the presentation. Pictures of Lewis and those close to him also enhance the book. This title continues what Michael Coren touches upon in The Man Who Created Narnia (Eerdmans, 1996), albeit with a stronger emphasis on Lewis's spirituality. Gr. 6^-9. Gormley does an excellent job of introducing Lewis, a Christian philosopher and author, to the many young people who have enjoyed his Chronicles of Narnia. As the author's note and the annotated bibliography show, Gormley has used many sources, including Lewis' own writings, to piece together his story. In doing so, she focuses on how Lewis' early life, including the death of his mother and his uneasy relationship with his father, had a continuing impact on his adult life and his writings. Most central to her story, however, is Lewis' personal journey from atheist to committed Christian, and Gormley frames this inner conflict in a way readers will not only understand but also identify with. Small black-and-white pictures break up the text, but the layout is not particularly inviting. A readable biography that should attract Narnia fans. Gormley wonderfully takes you through the journey of C.S. Lewis' childhood story writing days, and continues you onto his more mature and very obscure writing style as his life progresses. Through the whole biography she slowly gives you little hints about Lewis' humor, fear, and family problems. We not only learn about this intuitive storyteller but we are introduced to a man that followed earnestly after the heart of God not only in his personal life but also we see this through his novels. Nearing the end of this life explained we receive the background of one of his most famous novel sets, The Chronicles of Narnia.
When reading this there is one thing that will stand out among any other biography written about Lewis. It not only talks about Lewis' profound ability to create wonderful stories that can take a person to places that were previously unimagined. But this book also shows the very hard and personal adversity that Lewis had to triumph over in order to create a great world for others that he wishes he could actually be living in.
Doing this not only gives us a better background on Lewis but it makes him more of a personal author by showing that he struggled with some of the same things that we struggle with, and not just a high and mighty man of fiction.
Even with all of the great attributes of this book there was one drawback when reading it. Gormley moves very very slow through his life. I feel that she has included too many useless facts about Lewis that do not give us any insight into his personal life or his writing style and motivation. This not only makes Lewis' life appear to be boring, but it also makes you the reader loose interest at key points in Lewis' life. But all in all if you want to delve into the mind and life of one of the most influential writers of the 19th century this is your book.

Dymanic and Superb!

This book tells the life of one of the greatest storytellers of all time. It tells of his life in step-by-step review in easy wording for the average reader. I find this book extremely touching in many ways. One of these is how spiritually he was in his books. Each having a Christian theme to it. It also tells of his hard lfie in childhood which eventually led him to the Lord. This book recognizes his master pieces such as "The Chronicles of Narnia" and my all time favorite "Perelandra". It show the humble life this man lead and directed to his readers. This book gives a accurate description on his life. The only problem is the "choppyness" (gaps in his life, etc.). But other than that this book holds a spiritual and mental meaning for us all.

An excellent text for those considering the field of forensic science.

About the Author
Karen Ramey Burns is a practicing forensic anthropologist, teacher, writer, and human rights worker. She received her graduate education in forensic anthropology under the direction of the late Dr. William R. Maples at the University of Florida and developed experience in major crime laboratory procedures while working for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Division of Forensic Sciences. She continues to serve the state of Georgia as a consultant in forensic anthropology and as an appointed member of the Georgia Council on American Indian Concerns. She has testified as an expert witness in local,
state, and international cases.
Dr. Burns has devoted much of her professional career to international work, providing educational and technical assistance in the excavation and identification of human remains in Latin America, Haiti, the Middle East, and Africa. She documented war crimes in Iraq after the Gulf War (1991) and provided testimony in the Raboteau Trial in Gona�ve, Haiti (2000). She is the author of the “Protocol for Disinterment and Analysis of Skeletal Remains,” in the Manual for the Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-Legal, Arbitrary, and Summary Executions (1991), a United Nations publication.
In times of national emergency, she works for the National Disaster Medical System, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She was deployed for the Katrina/Rita Hurricanes disaster in 2005, Tri-State Crematory incident in 2002, the World Trade Center terrorist attack in 2001, the Tarboro, North Carolina, flood in 1999, and the Flint River flood of 1994.
Dr. Burns has contributed to several historic research projects, including a study of the Phoenician genocide in North Africa (Carthage), the identification of the revolutionary war hero Casimir Pulaski, and the search for Amelia Earhart. Dr. Burns is a coauthor of the award-winning book Amelia Earhart’s Shoes, Is the Mystery Solved? (2001), a discourse on the archaeological investigation.
Her research interests include microstructure of mineralized tissues, effects of burning and cremation, and decomposition. She teaches human osteology, forensic anthropology, and human origins at the University of Georgia, as well as forensic anthropology and expert witness testimony for the U.S. Department of Justice’s International Criminal Investigative Training
Assistance Program (ICITAP).
Dr. Burns is presently the Director of Field Investigations for EQUITAS,the Colombian Interdisciplinary Team for Forensic Work and Psychosocial Assistance, Bogot�, Colombia.

Outdated for 2013

Unfortunately this book is seriously out of date with the current forensic knowledge. If you want some bathroom reading material this is a good book for it. There are wonderful illustrations and graphs but for real forensic study, you should check out some other titles. The concepts, wording, and how to go about things are outdated as of 2013 when I got this book for a forensic anthropology class with a professor currently in the field. She used this text as a 'what not to do today' in the field and as a history lesson. When this was actually written (late 1990's it is said but I cannot prove this statement) it was a good look at forensic anthropology and is a good read in learning the history of the science. But not for today's field practice. I am not dissing the author, she was wonderful in her time, I just wish the publisher didn't put this outdated text to print just because she died.

The publisher has not updated any of the author information since the first edition run as Karen Ramey Burns died January 7, 2012 and this edition came out a month later. According to her LinkedIn account she was a Forensic Anthropologist at the University of Utah Department of Anthropology from 2008 until her death in 2012 which is 4 years, she did Equipo Colombiano Interdisciplinario de Trabajo Forense y Asistencia Psicosocial at Miembro del Comite Directivo Equipo Colombiano Interdisciplinario de Trabajo Forense y Asistencia Psicosocial for 7 years (2005 - 2012).

She was also part of the Directory Committee for EQUITAS from 2005 - 2012 and was first concidered an Forensic Anthropologist for TIGHAR 1999 - 2012 as well as working at the University of Georgia as an Adjunct Professor from 1995 - 2006 (11 years). The years tally on her LinkedIn is incorrect as they do not have her listed as deceased.

Amazing Forensic Anthropology Training Manual

This book is amazing for the beginning learner on forensic anthropology. Even for someone who needs to brush up on their skills, this book is awesome. It has absolutely everything you would need to know from locating a grave to court trial procedures to professionalism guidelines and report writting skills. This book is SO helpful for a student just starting to learn about forensic anthropology and everything that goes along with it. I definitely recommend this book for beginning forensic anthropology classes as it is extremely useful. It will help with field work, court work and everything in between.
