At last! A book that tells it like it is....

Real Rape, Real Pain is a must have for any individual working in the allied health professions or ministry. Easteal and McOrmond-Plummer have blended the voices of real women on the journey of healing after being raped by their male partners. Between the stories which enable the reader to see how the stages of recovery occur differently with each survivor.

The last three chapters are a pure joy to read. The authors discuss reclaiming healthy sexuality, self-esteem and physical intimacy. Easteal and McOrmond-Plummer provide tips for secondary survivors, how to educate children and call churches to speak out against rape for what rape is: a sexual crime against an individual. This book is a must have for both a woman who is struggling with the aftermath of rape by her partner and those individuals who are courageous enough to sit with the woman on her journey.

Too hard to enjoy or learn from!

This is book is incredibly hard to maneuver and understand. The chapters are incredibly long and are not organized in a way that is conducive to fully understanding the concepts. There seems to be an overload of information in this book that really isn't necessary to get the general points across. The questions/exercises/cases at the end of the chapter send you on a merry-go-round in search of answers, and in some instances, don't seem to relate to the material in the actual chapters themselves. I am extremely frustrated with navigating this book - and this is coming from someone who has been an accountant for more than a decade. I am able to answer some the questions in this book just based on my work experience and prior undergraduate educational learning, but I think this book would be very discouraging for someone who is trying to get a deeper understanding of what really are some basic accounting concepts. I think if the author/publisher cut out some of the material, this book would be a better educational tool.

I did enjoy the real world company examples strewn throughout the book of Campbell and Colgate.

Available information on habitat, diet, reproductive mode, egg size, developmental pattern, developmental times, larval type, and conditions for settlement and metamorphosis is reported for over 450 species.

Excellent reference material on larval biology

Meg Strathmann (and her colleagues) put together a wonderful reference book that is a must-have item for anyone doing work on the reproductive biology or larval biology of marine invertebrate animals along the Pacific coast of the North America. This book is also a great source of reference material for invertebrate biologists anywhere in the world.
This book includes information about methods, and hints about culturing and maintaining marine invertebrate larvae. It also contains published or unpublished (but documented) observations on the reproduction and development of marine invertebrates of the northern Pacific coast.
The book is divided into chapters devoted to different invertebrate phyla, including methods for culturing their larvae, as well as information on the timing of spawning and development of as many Pacific NW species as have been studied.
The book, published in 1987, is now approaching its 15th year in publication. Even though some parts of it are slowing slipping out of date, this book remains the best reference book on this topic.

A Must Read

I've come to learn that my story is not much different from that of other IBD sufferers. I was living a happy and healthy life, when one day, for no apparent reason, I suddenly began to experience abdominal cramps and loose stools. Over time, this progressed to debilitating abdominal pain and 20+ bloody and mucoid bowel movements each day. As I am training to be a medical doctor myself, I naturally turned to traditional medicine for answers. Definitive answers, though, were far from what I got. Nonetheless, traditional medicine was all I knew. So despite its obvious gaps in knowledge on this matter, I took a leap of faith and followed the directions given to me. I tried just about every anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and over-the-counter analgesic available. I went through numerous courses of steroids and even an immunosuppressant. For about a year, I let the doctors adjust and readjust medication dosages in the hopes that they would eventually find the key and would be able to protect me from having a colectomy. During this year, life as I knew it, was over. I had to take leave from school, lost about 60 pounds, spent 10 days in the hospital, experienced indescribable abdominal pain, became house-bound due to the frequency of bowel movements, took around 20+ pills daily, incurred numerous side effects to these various medications, and spent thousands of dollars on treatments that did not help.

My own observations led me to believe that the treatments I was being given were actually worsening my condition. But what could I do? After all, I had to follow the advice of my experienced doctors, right? Wrong. One day, I finally realized that if all these medications weren't helping, then how could I justify the side effects and expense. I understood what the doctors were saying when they strongly advised me not to stop my treatment, but I also realized that no study that they quoted could ever hold a candle to my own experiences. I was slowly and painfully dying at the age of 27, and nothing that they were doing for me was of any help at all. Traditional medicine has done wondrous things for many people, including myself, over the years, but in the case of IBD, it did not have answer for me and I needed to look elsewhere.

Everything changed for me when I MIRACULOUSLY found Dave's book online. I don't doubt that I likely would have dismissed his theories as nonsense if I came across them month 1. But I was now in month 11 and was meeting with a surgeon to discuss having a colectomy. So, I read his book and for the first time felt like someone else understood my predicament. The things he said were in direct agreement with my own experiences and observations. For the first time in a long time, I was filled with hope and felt as if this illness might be manageable. I am now at month 15 and have been free of medications and doctor visits. I've spoken to Dave numerous times over the telephone and through email. He has done nothing less than nurse me back to health. Dave has given me my life back. How do you repay someone for that?

A few of these doctors tell me that they have heard similar stories from some of their own patients, but in the end, these doctors have no training or understanding of nutrition and natural healing and can do little more than simply listen to my story.

THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE!

I have suffered from colitis and crohns for 7 years. THIS BOOK changed my life in 7 DAYS! I also suffer from celiac, and will not belabor the pain, physical and emotional struggles of having these 3 diseases. I have refused treatment w/ modern prescriptions and went the so-called "natural" route for 5 years. I only became moderately better in beginning, only to experience flareups that became progressively worse. I had spent every dime I had on traditional doctors, natural doctors, vitamins, remedies, to no avail. In desperation I found this book. Having already been vegetarian for 4 yrs and vegan for 8 mos, the transition was not so hard, except for giving up the decaf coffee and salt. As soon as I let go of these things, on day 7, my world turned around! My bowels were normal after 7 years of dysfunction! I replaced my coffee with warm, pure water in the morning. I replaced my grapefruit or gluten free toast with ripe bananas and date smoothies for breakfast and enjoy the lunch and dinner guidelines for the healing phase. I am in DAY 8, after being sick for 2,555 days, not one day without pain and problems, and I am eating without pain, and can feel my body detoxing all the garbage I put in it, hoping to fix my body. Dr. Klein's analysis is brilliant and true. MY BODY HAS BEEN TRYING TO FIX MY BODY all along! I just had to stop interrupting it. I know several people suffering w/ C&C and am urging them to get off the Big Pharm merry-go-round that just keeps them sicker, promotes disease, and makes a lot of people rich in the process. The anti-inflammatories don't work. Eating a diet of meat, scrambled eggs, toast and mashed potatoes certainly won't work. Please, please, please, if you are sick with an inflammatory bowel condition, or just want vital health to be yours, buy this book! It has literally changed my life in a short time. I know because of years of damage from celiac and C&C, I have a way to go and the cravings for the offending foods are tough sometimes, but I know after a few days this is a healthier way to live. Dense, water rich, ripe foods, raw, tasty, nourishing. I never believed I could give up salt, but after a day or two, I actually started tasting the food. Beyond anything else, I, like many C&C sufferers reached the point where I would do anything to get better. I am grateful for this book and carry it with me every day so I can re-read the foods and plan for the healing stage I am in. I can't wait until I am in post-healing! Thank you Dr. Klein for your revolutionary work in this area.

This book gave me a second chance at life

Dr. David Klein is an exceptional human. He has an in depth understanding of Ulcerative Colitis and has the steps to take to cure this disease down to a "t". With his guidance I was able to get my Ulcerative Colitis into remission in just 26 days! The vegan healing diet plan outlined in the book will allow your body to detox and heal itself the way that nature intended. There is no book or doctor that I could recommend more. In addition to purchasing the book I also hired Dr. David Klein as my doctor. Together we were able to modify my diet on an almost daily basis based on the current state of my body. Not only was he able to provide a wealth of knowledge, he was also able to provide me with the emotional support that I needed to get through this difficult time. I am forever grateful to this man for allowing me to live a life not only free of disease, but a life full of health and vitality!

In What it Felt Like, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Henry Allen captures the spirit of the 20th century decade by decade in a sparkling little book that reads like a Lily Tomlin-meets-Gallagher monologue (minus the watermelon). Ten brief chapters describe the sights, sounds, and smells of the decade, from the "good years" of 1900-1910 to the "whatever" decade of the 1990s. Allen also manages to convey the "feel" of the times, dispelling some myths along the way. For example, he points out that for most people, the Depression of the 1930s was not so much about what one saw (breadlines, Hoovervilles), but what wasn't there: cars on the street, new babies, factory whistles, construction sites. Allen, a longtime feature writer and editor for the Washington Post , examines the last century, decade by decade. To capture a particular decade's "feeling," Allen incorporates small mountains of details--food and clothes, slang and posture, issues and idols--in each essay, often including fictional conversations between individuals who are somehow representative. These essays are sometimes contrarian, reminding readers, for example, that most 60s young people neither fought in Vietnamese jungles nor marched for civil rights and against the war. Still, the dominant news stories of that (or any) decade are inevitably part of what defines the experience of the era. ALLEN KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE

In this book, Henry Allen, one of the Washington POST's big dogs, has written beautifully of our past century. He celebrates America from the start of "Modern Times" to the edgy reality of Today.
His unerring hand captures the essence of each decade with the keen eyes and ears of a participant. Remarkably, his skill reveals even the rich patois of early dialogues; capturing the meter and parlance of the day-to-day conversations of the early 1900's and beyond.
As he takes us on this compelling jaunt through the decades, a marvelous story of The People of the past unfolds. Allen treats the reader's senses to vivid visual history, too, seasoning our "conventional wisdom" with a masterful dash of his always believable characteriztions.
Originally published in The POST, the series was immediately snagged by the publisher for this release.
Allen, a Pulitzer Prize winner, has captured my imagination with "What It Felt Like." In this highly readable, enjoyable book, he moves easily from scenes of the chattering bustle of the Industrial Revolution to the brilliant sunshine of the acid-drenched, screwy Sixties. From the agonies of the Thirties to the boomtime of the Fifties.
I urge you to pick up a copy, curl up on a lazy day and enjoy one of my new favorite books. A thoroughly enjoyable "read."
PS to GRAND PARENTS: Why not give copies to the kids and the family this Christmas? "What It Felt Like" is a great conversation starter.

Henry Allen Really Knows What It Felt Like!

What It Felt Like is the perfect description of this little jewel of a book. I read it, I looked at the illlustrations, and I could smell the leaves burning on the road outside our house at dusk; I could hear the sound of my jump rope swishing across the pavement of our small town street. I could smell the bacon and eggs my mother cooked for us on school mornings (and then I could remember the smell of the grits which I hated!). I know, I finally know, why the sixties seemed so dizzying to me, not because Allen lectures me on them, but because he wakens my senses of them -- the sights, the sounds, and the sweetness of them.
How lovely to be reminded and not "talked to." This book is not a "tome." What It Felt Like is an invitation to recall, to reflect, to rejoice. How delightful to read a book where the mere phrase, often followed by an electrifyingly exciting tour de force of word combinations, does all the work, and I have all the fun. How extraordinary to find a writer who so clearly treasures the true glory of words, and not just the abundance of them.
What a wonderful Christmas gift Mr. Allen has given us. I'm going to give it to my children and my friends, and my neighbors and ....

What It Felt Like

It is a daunting task to capture the essence of the 20th Century in one book, but Henry Allen has done it to a faretheewell. The format is one that holds one's attention with wonderful language and imagery. It is humorous and enchanting at the same time. Obviously, Mr. Allen did not live through the entire century, but he writes about each decade so believably that he takes you on a journey with him that places you in the middle of daily life in each of the decades. The technique is wonderful, and the book is a joy.
