The Last Place on Earth: Scott and Amundsen's Race to the South Pole, Revised and Updated (Modern Library Exploration), by Roland Huntford

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the South Pole was the most coveted prize in the fiercely nationalistic modern age of exploration. In the brilliant dual biography, the award-winning writer Roland Huntford re-examines every detail of the great race to the South Pole between Britain's Robert Scott and Norway's Roald Amundsen. Scott, who dies along with four of his men only eleven miles from his next cache of supplies, became Britain's beloved failure, while Amundsen, who not only beat Scott to the Pole but returned alive, was largely forgotten. This account of their race is a gripping, highly readable history that captures the driving ambitions of the era and the complex, often deeply flawed men who were charged with carrying them out. THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH is the first of Huntford's masterly trilogy of polar biographies. It is also the only work on the subject in the English language based on the original Norwegian sources, to which Huntford returned to revise and update this edition.

Amazon.com Review
On December 14, 1911, the classical age of polar exploration ended when Norway's Roald Amundsen conquered the South Pole. His competitor for the prize, Britain's Robert Scott, arrived one month later--but died on the return with four of his men only 11 miles from their next cache of supplies. But it was Scott, ironically, who became the legend, Britain's heroic failure, "a monument to sheer ambition and bull-headed persistence. His achievement was to perpetuate the romantic myth of the explorer as martyr, and ... to glorify suffering and self-sacrifice as ends in themselves." The world promptly forgot about Amundsen.

Biographer Ronald Huntford's attempt to restore Amundsen to glory, first published in 1979 under the title Scott and Amundsen, has been thawed as part of the Modern Library Exploration series, captained by Jon Krakauer (of Into Thin Air fame). The Last Place on Earth is a complex and fascinating account of the race for this last great terrestrial goal, and it's pointedly geared toward demythologizing Scott. Though this was the age of the amateur explorer, Amundsen was a professional: he left little to chance, apprenticed with Eskimos, and obsessed over every detail. While Scott clung fast to the British rule of "No skis, no dogs," Amundsen understood that both were vital to survival, and they clearly won him the Pole.

Amundsen in Huntford's view is the "last great Viking" and Scott his bungling opposite: "stupid ... recklessly incompetent," and irresponsible in the extreme--failings that cost him and his teammates their lives. Yet for all of Scott's real or exaggerated faults, he understood far better than Amundsen the power of a well-crafted sentence. Scott's diaries were recovered and widely published, and if the world insisted on lionizing Scott, it was partly because he told a better story. Huntford's bias aside, it's clear that both Scott and Amundsen were valiant and deeply flawed. "Scott ... had set out to be an heroic example. Amundsen merely wanted to be first at the pole. Both had their prayers answered." --Svenja Soldovieri

From Publishers Weekly
Huntford's chronicle of the rivalry between the United Kingdom's Robert Scott and Norway's Roald Amundsen to become the first explorer to reach the South Pole, poses a substantial challenge for adaptation into the audio format. The narrative presents events in a third-person expository fashion, offering precious few opportunities for dialogue among the real-life characters. American listeners may consider Tim Pigott-Smith's British accent distracting, while others might enjoy it as a relevant bit of flair. The story contains plenty of inherent drama, but the abridgment seems to veer off course in the concluding sections, as the long-term legacies of the two polar pioneers is rather rushed. Review
"A remarkably vivid picture of the agonies and feuds, as well as joys,
of polar exploration . . . a fascinating book."--The New York Times

"An extraordinarily rich reading experience."--Los Angeles Times

Roland Huntford is the former Scandinavian correspondent for the London Observer. He is the bestselling author of two critically acclaimed biographies of Ernest Shackleton and Fridtjof Nansen as well as the novel Sea of Darkness. He lives in Cambridge, England.

Jon Krakauer is the author of Into Thin Air, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and Into the Wild. His work has appeared in many magazines, including Outside, Smithsonian, and National Geographic. He chose the books in the Modern Library Exploration series for their literary merit and historical significance--and because he found them such a pleasure to read.

What really happened
By John L. Velonis
I recently read "Scott's Last Expedition", the edited version of his diaries from his South Pole expedition. This left me interested but unfulfilled: I wanted to learn more about Amundsen and the context for both expeditions, and to get more analysis of the bald facts as related in Scott's diaries. So I turned to Huntford's "The Last Place on Earth".
I was not disappointed. Huntford narrates the entire lives of both Amundsen and Scott, with edifying discursions on Nansen, Shackleton, and other Polar explorers. Huntford knows Norwegian and thus was able to consult primary sources for Amundsen's expedition directly; he provides many excerpts from the letters and diaries of both British and Norwegian expedition members. He also reveals some of the omissions in the edited version of Scott's diaries.
As a minor quibble, Huntford only rarely gives full dates, so that I found myself frequently having to page back a considerable way to remind myself which year or even which month it was. An appendixed chronology would have been immeasurably helpful.
As other reviewers have noted, the author is highly critical of Scott -- occasionally unfairly so, as when he notes that Scott's first depot journey brought "a ton of supplies not quite to 80 degrees South" where Amundsen's party had "moved three tons another two degrees of latitude closer to the Pole", omitting to mention that Amundsen started about a degree farther south than Scott. But from the evidence Huntford adduces, even without his interpretations, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Scott was criminally unprepared, negligent, and generally incompetent. It is not as though he had no information about what he would be facing -- his previous expedition encountered nearly all the same problems, but he seems not to have learned anything from it. Huntford shows how Scott's diaries and their careful editing combine to portray Scott in a much more favorable light than he deserves -- a case of the loser writing the history books.
Huntford also reveals what might charitably be called "traditional" attitudes toward women. For example, speaking of Kathleen Bruce, Scott's future wife, Huntford says, "She was a predatory female; more predatory than usual, that is." Fortunately, since nearly all the principal figures in the book are male, this only surfaces occasionally, as when Huntford describes Amundsen as having "an almost feminine sensitivity for the undertones and cross-currents on which a leader has to play".
Despite its flaws, "The Last Place on Earth" should be among the first books you read on Polar exploration, or true-life adventure in general. Once the race for the Pole was on, I found it as hard to put down as any fictional thriller.

Riveting

April 2000...Initial Review
I too grew up on the mythology of the "great" Scott. I understand the comments of readers who feel Mr. Huntford tends to be "relentless" in his criticism of Scott. On the other hand, when you have been duped by both the English government and Scott himself, perhaps Mr. Huntford's bias is understood. It is truly a fascinating book, contrasting the bumbling and asinine leadership of Scott with the methodical and "boringly" brilliant ways of Roald Amundsen. Not only is this a book about a true adventure, it is a study of psychology and leadership in general. Lest people are left with the impression that all ends in a fairytale manner, Huntford shows how, in a perverse way, the remaining days of Amundsen and Scott share the same sad fate. Apparently the loneliness of the Antarctic never left either man.

August 06. Since writing the review, I travelled to Antarctica. One of the members on the expedition is an historian...and many aboard had read Huntford's book. So the question often asked was how Scott could be such a bumbler. After numerous discussions, I finally came to the conclusion that it was more a matter of timing. By this I mean that Scott was a 19th Century explorer taking on a 20th Century task.....Bound to fail and limited by his background, arrogance etc. On the other hand, Amundsen was truly a 20th Century explorer, in the right era hence able to better handle the problems he faced. Does not make Scott any less of a pitiful character, but at least more understandable.

I Really Loved This Book!
By George M. Shiffler III
This was not normal read for me. But I was recently in Oslo and went to see the Fram Museum while there. The expereince was a real eye-opener to the whole history of polar exploration. Most of us know that the poles were explored at the end of the 19th and the begining of the 20th centuries and that Amundsen and Scott had their race to pole around 1912. What most of us don't know and don't appreciate is what an incredible feat those journeys of discovery were. While walking the decks of the Fram, I was struck by the notion that I was touring the 19th century equivalent of the Apollo space capsules. In many ways, the polar expolarations of Amundsen, Nansen, Shackelton, and, yes, even Scott, were even more of technical achievement than going to the moon. At any rate, Huntford's book brings the whole history and experience of polar exploration vividly to life. I usually read before going to bed and often found myself up way past my usual bedtime devouring this book. I can't think of a better introduction to the whole sweep and drama of polar exploration. After this, I'm actually quite anxious to read some of Huntford's other books on the subject.

Aussie Grit: My Formula One Journey, by Mark Webber

Mark Webber was at the centre of one of the most captivating chapters in the history of Formula One. In 2010, while racing for Red Bull, he and his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, went head to head for the world championship. There could be only one winner.

Since retiring from Formula One, Mark has concentrated on endurance racing, including the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race. He hit the front pages of newspapers around the world in December 2014 when he slammed into the barricades in the final round of the FIA World Endurance Championship in South America and was lucky to escape with his life.

But the controversy of his relationship on and off the track with Vettel, who went on to win multiple world titles, has never been far beneath the surface. Here, for the first time, Webber tells the inside story of one of Formula One's most intriguing battles - it is a story that goes to the heart of why the sport is loved by millions of fans around the world.

In his trademark straight-talking, no-nonsense style, Mark reveals his amazing life on and off the Formula One racetrack, from his first taste of karting to his F1 debut in 2002, from scoring Minardi's first points in three years at the Australian Grand Prix through to his first win with Red Bull at the 2009 German Grand Prix and the year he should have been crowned world champion. Mark Webber's journey to the top of Formula One was every bit as determined and committed as his racing. Aussie Grit is his searingly honest story.

Includes a foreword by Formula One legend Sir Jackie Stewart.

A great read for any F1 fan - you don't have to be a Webber fan to get a lot out of this book.
By William L. Cotter
I wasn't a big Mark Webber fan (but I didn't dislike him either.) After reading his book I have anew appreciation for him. He brings to light many of the unseen political actions and favoritism that goes on behind the scenes in F1. The book is not always flattering towards team owners that I held in high regard. It really shows that F1 is a large business. I guess they don't call it the Piranha Club for nothing. My eyes were opened to this and also to the amazing amount of effort Webber put into getting into F1 in the first place. This is a good read for any F1 fan.

Pretty good sports bio
By BillH
It's pretty good for a sports autobiography. Webber admits in the introduction that he, like most, had a ghost writer. That's OK. Webber tells his story, warts and all (mostly), but the writing is pedestrian. He's a guy with great passion for the sport and, I think, for like. Happy to have read it as he was one of my favorite drivers to watch.
Recommended, but buy a used copy if you can.

Excellent introduction to Ayurveda!!
By Debbie Jones
Around one year ago, I decided that I needed more peace, happiness and balance in my life. I'm so thankful that I found Michelle Fondin's yoga studio, The Ayurvedic Path, in Herndon, VA to practice yoga. During my practices, I learned of Michelle's book, "The Wheel of Healing with Ayurveda". I had heard some things about Ayurveda, but didn't really know what it was, how it worked and if it could help me. So I decided to read Michelle's book. So glad I did! I found it to be an extremely informative and helpful introduction to Ayurveda. Michelle really breaks Ayurveda theory and practice down so that readers can understand and use it in a functional way. I love everything about this book including the very helpful questionnaires, checklists and exercises. I've learned many things, but most importantly I've learned that our health is multidimensional. This quote says it all, "Health is an integration of my mind, emotions, soul, spirit, physical body and purpose in life". So true. As Michelle says, "If one of these is out of balance, they are all out of balance, rest assured." This book has really helped me to think about my health in a different way.

I highly recommend "The Wheel of Healing with Ayurveda" to help you on your path to health, healing and happiness!

A great guide for beginners and experts alike
By Lauri Lumby
One of the greatest blessings in my life has been connecting with an Ayurvedic Medicine practitioner and learning how best to eat for my specific body type. Learning that my dosha (body temperament) is Vata/Pitta and how to manage the typical imbalances of this combination has helped me to alleviate all kinds of unpleasant physical as well as emotional symptoms. Ayurvedic Medicine has been a goddess-send for me! I was therefore thrilled to discover the book, The Wheel of Healing with Ayurveda by Michelle S. Fondin. Here she describes in very simple terms the theory and practice of Ayurveda and provides guidance for you to begin your own journey with Ayurveda. I highly recommend this book for beginners and experts alike.

Best overview of an Ancient Healing System
By Susan Schenck
Ayurvedic medicine has been around for five thousand years, standing the test of time. Yet parts of it have only recently gone mainstream. Practices such as oil pulling and gallbladder/liver cleanses have contributed to the health of millions while costing only pennies.

This book is a comprehensive yet easy-to-read guide of ayurvedic medicine theory which really emphasizes balance. In other words, true health is not just about the body, but the body, mind, spirit, emotions, relationships, occupation, finances, etc. Real health involves all your life. As the author states, "It is my firm belief that most illness stems from us not living our life's purpose. Wehen we are living out of line with what we're supposed to be doing, our bodies feel it."

The book includes 10 guidelines for eating awareness, an explanation for the three main body types (doshas) and their recommended diets and exercises, 12 guidelines for better sleep, a huge list of foods with their tastes (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, astringent), 10 tips for a better spiritual life, 12 traits of healthy relationships, four rules for compassionate communication, and much much more.

"Designers take note: this book will guide you to creating the next generation of viral must-have apps. The bright light of fresh design thinking reveals that there is lots more to be done with our smartphones, tablets, and personal media. I'm charmed by the big ideas and promising technologies that will make our lives better, our relationships more fulfilling, and our communities more connected."
Ben Shneiderman, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland Human-Computer Interaction Lab; coauthor ofDesigning the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction
"The authors have served up a fresh and exciting challenge for designers, students and researchers, inviting them to dare to think differently. Instead of simply following the default framing of technological design in terms of yet another 'looking down' app they ask the reader to look up and around them and be inspired by how we actually live our lives when 'out there', app-less. They bring them into this new world order using their inimitable style that has become their hallmark: witty, provocative, engaging and highly accessible. The book draws on many insightful examples and before-their-time, at-the-edge research projects, widening the scope of topics to include food, fashion, new materials and the art of being more mindful. The secret, it seems, to creating the next generation of technologies that is not another app is to make us feel truly alive by capitalizing on how we use all of our senses in the world."Yvonne Rogers, Professor and Director of the University College London Interaction Centre; coauthor ofInteraction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction

Getting beyond the glass touchscreen
By Daniel L. Ashbrook
There's Not an App for That is a great book for thinking outside of the "glass brick" that we're used to interacting with. Unlike many other books on mobile UX, this book doesn't tell you how to write apps, do wireframing, or size buttons; it guides you toward thinking about what comes after the iPhone and its progeny.

The book is divided into sections, each with a theme: moving from simply touching a mobile device to more rich interaction; encouraging people to engage with the world around them rather than focusing on the device in their hands; thinking about alternatives to clean, streamlined design; looking at the dividing line between personal, private devices and public interaction; how to encourage more mindfulness in interaction and connection between people; and how to think more universally about design and UX, to include the developing world.

Each section has several short, easy-to-read chapters, making the book easily digestible in small chunks. There are plenty of pointers to other resources to expand on the themes in the book, from web pages and videos to research papers.

Although not structured enough for an undergraduate text, I'm using the book as a textbook for a graduate-level mobile human-computer interaction class and the students are enjoying it very much. It provides a lot of good fodder for discussion.

The book is a fun and interesting read
By Jody Schofield
The book is a fun and interesting read. For that I give it 3 stars. There is a lot of theory in this book and although it does try to get the reader to think outside the box and what *could* be. We still have the reality of creating experiences on glass boxes. Great for "what if" conversations with friends, but I didn't find a lot of practical advice for improving my current apps. (Maybe that's just me).

This is the authority on the features and equipment that belong and those that don't belong in a cruising sailboat. Rarely before has a book on sailing drawn upon as much experience and knowledge as these authors provide. Between them, they have been sailing for some 850 years, have covered more than 750,000 miles offshore (the equivalent of 30 circuits of the globe), and have owned 43 cruising sailboats.

A chapter from the Old Testament of sailing
By Riccardo
This collection of articles by a Cruising Club of America committee of the surviving gods of 20th-century sailing, especially the venerable Olin Stephens, lays down the dogmas of bluewater sailing design and safety as they were agreed upon by these worthies at the close of the century. Their lament at the undue influence of racing design on consumer cruising boats is commendably progressive, but otherwise the material is a chronicling of their conservative preferences in traditional equipment. The chapter on anchors takes a step backward, recommending as the primary anchor the fisherman, a design not in production even in 1987 (based on the author's experiences in 1962!); 4 of the 5 boats in the chapter on good designs were custom models not affordable to the general public, letting us all know where we (and they) stand in the class structure of sailing. Read this material for its intrinsic value and recover your sense of modernity by having a go at Garry Hoyt's book "Ready about", which is the New Testament and road map to the 21st century future of sailing.

Authoritative on cruising yacht design and features.
By A Customer
This is the authority on the features and equipment that belong and those that don't belong in a cruising sailboat. Rarely before has a book on sailing drawn upon as much experience and knowledge as these authors provide. Between them, they have been sailing for some 850 years, have covered more than 750,000 miles offshore (the equivalent of 30 circuits of the globe), and have owned 43 cruising sailboats.
Writing for sailors of cruising boats of all sizes and types, the authors cover just about every aspect of preparing to go to sea in a modern boat: characteristics of safe boats for blue-water cruising; latest developments in hardware, construction and sails; dimensions of proper sea-going bunks, chart tables and cockpits; lists of sails, emergency gear, and electronic instruments for different types of boats and sailing; ways to improve your boat's ventilation and refrigeration; checklists of gear and medical equipment...and much more.

Vague and inconclusive
By dc
I bought the book because I am looking for a blue water cruiser to take me round the World.

I liked the design explanations especially stability. However I was astonished at the brevity of the section on Keels. Less than a page on one of the most controversial aspects of blue water sailing.

The section on "Five Good Boats" is disappointing in that the boats are not widely available, apart perhaps from the Pearson. In an article in the Pearson Owners association web site the designer implicitly states the Pearson range were designed for coastal work.

There is no mention of any of the popular boats generally regarded as offshore suitable.

The author - the Technical Committee of the CCA, is no doubt a prestigious and experienced body, but it is heavily involved in racing and I think this shows.

The addition of a section on popular "offshore" boats and their strengths and weaknesses would have put my rating up to 4 stars.

Modern Architecture: Romanticism and Reintegration, by Henry Russell Hitchcock, Vincent Joseph Scully

Originally published in 1929, this book demonstrates the architecture of the 1920s as the product of over a century of architectural development, despite the visual evidence that seemed to indicate that it had made a radical break with the past. "Modern Architecture" crystallised the history and theories behind the "international style" for an American audience. Hitchcock was only 27 at the time, and "Modern Architecture" was his first book; yet it would substantially reshape the way subsequent generations would view modern architecture and its history. Furthermore, "Modern Architecture" is the book that would establish Henry-Russell Hitchcock as a pre-eminent American historian of modern architecture.

Subliminal Therapy is a technique that utilizes hypnotic phenomena for therapeutic purpose without requiring a formal trance induction. The protocol is effective as a sole intervention or as an adjunct to other forms of treatment. In this volume, the reader is introduced to the concepts and applications of Subliminal Therapy and taught its protocol as well This includes establishing identifiable communication with the unconscious domain, uncovering influences that are causing current problems, and resolving those influences. The logically applied protocol of Subliminal Therapy engages unconscious process to uncover the causes of presenting problems, whether manifesting physically, emotionally, intellectually or behaviorally, and then to resolve that influence through re-framing and re-conditioning. The causes of psychogenic problems are usually not consciously recognized; only the resultant symptom - the disability - is apparent. Subliminal Therapy provides a practical, efficient and logical way to identify the cause, as well as a practical, efficient and logical way to resolve its influence. Tremendous Breakthrough
By Ramondo
I am a longtime hypnotist and hypnotherapist so my understanding of this text came quite easy. I have just begin to use this method and at least preliminarily, my experience is totally consistent what I have found in the book. This appears to me at this point to be a tremendous breakthrough in healing.

Conventional allopathic medicine has a pill to cover up almost any symptom, even if it has to render the patient unconscious or in a stupor. And many of the side effects are worse than the symptom. (ie. from Chantix website: "Some people have had changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions while using CHANTIX to help them quit smoking. Some people had these symptoms when they began taking CHANTIX, and others developed them after several weeks of treatment or after stopping CHANTIX.) This is only one example.

Dr. Yager has had a 99% average success with Subliminal Therapy for smoking cessation with no chemicals whatsoever, hence, no chance of side effects.
This is huge folks. Very few book I have ever read would I rate as highly as this one.

Best Hypnosis Technique I've Seen
By James Einert, ND, CH
This is one of the best techniques I have ever used. I have been a hypnotist for almost 6 years, I have studied direct suggestion, parts therapy, regression to cause, UltraHeight, and much more, but this is the best technique I have used as yet. It is a wonder way to "hypnotize" your client without a formal induction, plus you can do changework without having to drag your client back through the emotional traumas that caused the problems in the first place. This technique will be a cornerstone in my practice from now on.
