Car Lovers

This is a great kit for explaining the mechanisms that go into making a car work. It comes with heavy cardboard pieces and plastic bolts and wing nuts that you use to make the various car part. We have made several of these and it really is fun to see the kids "get" it and connect with how a real car works. I would highly recommend this kit for kids that have an interest in cars.

Got this as Christmas gift for my grandson. I also got him Auto Repair For Dummies, How Car Work and a large 8 cylinder plastic model so that he can put together. This way he can get some what a visual and hands on without destroying our cars. He is now my official sidekick when i work on my trucks!

Learn how a car really works

I am excited about giving this book to my 7 year old grandson for Christmas. He loves cars and he can learn a lot from this little book before he's old enough to get under a real vehicle and get his hands dirty.

About the Author
Born Luigi Santomauro in 1951, Lou Di Palo grew up behind the counter at Di Palo’s in New York’s Little Italy and the Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Beloved by both his customers and those in the food community and media, Lou Di Palo is considered to be a preeminent Italian food expert. In addition to running Di Palo’s (for forty years and counting) with his brother, Sal, and sister Marie, he works as an Italian food educator and consultant for supermarkets, trade associations, and even Italy itself, which has given him many awards for his efforts to educate Americans in the ways of Italian food. He travels all over the United States, speaking about Italian food products on behalf of such regions or groups as the Consortium of Grana Padano or Speck from Alto Adige. With this, his first book, he hopes to bring his knowledge and passion to those who can’t make the trip to visit Di Palo’s in person.

Rachel Wharton has nearly twenty years of experience as a writer, reporter, and editor, including four years as a features food reporter at the New York Daily News. She is a contributing editor of Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn magazines, and a James Beard Foundation award-winning food writer with a master’s degree in food studies from New York University.

Incredible History of Italian food and life/Incredible Family

This book is so heart-felt throughout. You even want to be part of Lou's family. Seriously. The information is so well researched that you feel you have taken an advanced course in Italian life and Italian food. It is not a once-read book, it is a book you go back and read again and again, as you don't want to miss a part of anything this man has written. I recently brought my book to Di Palo's in hopes of meeting Lou and having him sign my book. The three siblings - Lou, Sal & Marie - were all working diligently behind the counter as a team. Lou and Sal were so anxious to please the customers, to share various kinds of cheeses, to answer any questions about products. These are genuinely nice people. I just wish I had brought a larger cooler to take home more products than I purchased, especially the most wonderful ricotta and fresh mozzarella I have ever tasted. My time was limited, or else I would have stayed in that store to observe and absorb so much of the culture this family unit was exhibiting, the kind you only read about in books anymore, as they rarely exist in real life. It was like stepping back in time to the turn of the 20th Century. If you can't get to New York City to go to Di Palo's, read this book. Trust me - you will either drive to NYC, take a bus or plane to experience in person what this book is all about. Can't wait to go back.

A monument to the Little Italy of bygone days when Mott St meant an Italian Feast 24/7!

Lou and his brother and sisters were my first friends when I was a child in the 1950's. Back then Louie and I were more interested in throwing "dirt bombs" onto 70th Street in Bensonhurst and looking for nickels so that we could go to the candy store to play "The Flying Purple People Eater" on the juke box. Good times when little boys were able to explore their territory. My mother's family was comprised of fish monger immigrants from Sicily and similar to Lou's family being milk and cheese peddlers in southern Italy, there was an immediate connection between our families.
Lou has put together a book that is much more than a cookbook. It is a historical monument to the generation of immigrants who came to America and did what they knew best.....and better than any commercial mass manufacturing enterprise could ever duplicate or even create to compare with the real thing. He teaches what real quality is and where he finds it for all to share. Rare to our generation of transient children and grandchildren of immigrants, Lou and family are a gift to the people of New York.....a treasure of what once was but is rare to find today. A family who loves what they do and enjoy passing their knowledge to their faithful customers....always willing to give samples describe why their delicacies taste the way they do and AND.....you don't have to be Italian......but it helps! Which reminds me....what ever happened to Levy's Real Jewish Rye?

Perfect book for anyone that wants to know a little history about the delicacies they eat. My favorite part is that Mr. Lou DiPalo answers all the questions we are always embarrassed to ask. And remember a great Espresso is all about the crema, 20-25 seconds is all it needs! Thanks Lou.

William Laird Kleine-Ahlbrandt earned a doctorate from the University of Geneva, where he attended the Graduate Institute of International Studies. He has written a number of books, including The Burden of Victory: France, Britain and the Enforcement of the Versailles Peace, 1919-1925 and Europe since 1945: From Conflict to Community. He was also a chevalier in the Order of the Palmes AcadAmiques.

Interested in the Holocaust - Learn from those who know.

Being a graduate student at Purdue University, I was lucky enough to personally know many of the authors of this book. During the six years in West Lafayette, IN and participating in several annual Holocaust Remembrance programs, I heard many of the authors describe their experiences first hand. This book is written as if you were sitting there with them as they talked. In this book, their stories are not written as if they are trying to win a Pulitzer Prize, instead they are telling them in their own words to create the hoped for visual pictures in the readers' minds. Their ultimate goal is to continue the Suvivors' Creed to "Never Forget", and with this book they take a long stride in that direction.

If youre into Kant....

Well obviously if youre into Kant you have to buy this book. Allen Wood (I took two courses with him last year) is perhaps The Kant Scholar alive today (him and Paul Guyer). Hes a really interesting guy to talk to as well: quite a radical, Marxist I think, and hes got a deep and I mean DEEP commitment to egalitarianism. This said his book which I bought last year was very interesting. Basically Wood tries to paint Kants ethical thought more attractively than most of us have usually seen it as. Some things I liked about the book were that he really proved his point about an overemphasis on the Formula of Universal Law, and his contention that Kant's ethical thought really is deeply rooted in his somewhat pessimistic realistic view of human nature. I think however that Wood often dismisses criticism or alternative viewpoints far too quickly and unconvincingly. This would be I think the main detraction in his work. Also the tone of the book at times is somewhat arrogant. Buy the book though. Very interesting reading, a bit dry at times, but in general a must read for someone interested in Kant.

One of the top science fiction books that I have read!

I love Sci-Fi books and I have read them for over 60 years. I have read thousands of Sci-Fi books. This book, written by Eric Nylund, is one of my favorites of all time. Just as a note, I don't play the Halo game so my review is only about the quality of the book.

This story is absolutely full of action, aliens, military combat and of course the superhuman feats of the Spartan II warriors. This is a team of warriors that know no fear and each one can fight like a thousand other soldiers combined. Trained since the age of 6, genetically mutated and enhanced they have become the strongest military force in the galaxy. Coupled with a super smart Artificial Intelligence, AI named Cortana, they are unbeatable. Put them into their Mjolnir Assault Armor and they are almost virtually invincible.

This book cames after the story about The Flood. Eric Nylund is the best author to write any of the Halo books. His books are by far the best stories and they are just superb Sci-Fi. I won't ruin the plot of the book as to many other reviews have already done that but if you love Halo stories this is one of the books you must read. I liked the book so much I purchased the Kindle version, then the large paperback version for my library and then the audio CD version to listen to in my car. I have read or listened to the book 5 times already.

If you love super heroes you will love the Master Chief and what he does in this book. Get it, you will love it.

Good, but not the best

Eric Nylund has proven himself as a stellar author helming Halo novels, including his first and perhaps best work, The Fall of Reach. I don't feel that First Strike quite lives up to the level of quality you'll find in Fall of Reach, but it is a good addition to the series. To date, First Strike is still the last book in the main story arc of the Halo universe, following Master Chief. Ghosts of Onyx is technically further on in the timeline, but it deals mostly with characters that do not appear in the games.

First Strike Happens between the games Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, from how Master Chief survived his encounter with Halo to how he gets to the beginning of Halo 2. There's a lot of adventure to be had along the way, from cramped hallway firefights to interstellar battles between multiple spaceships. You'll get lots of new information about the universe, such details on the operations of ONI and a glimpse into the secret lives of Covenant Engineers. Nylund continues to do stellar work, writing good characters and better action sequences.

First Strike came dangerously close to falling off the rails with a few overly complicated plot points. Keeping spoilers to a minimum, part of the plot revolves around Master Chief and friends gaining posession of a crystal that alters time and space. During one space battle in particular, ships aren't where they appear to be and technology stops working in normal ways. This makes things very messy for the crew, and for the reader. Nylund is a really gifted writer when it comes to action sequences, but I don't think any author could fully accomplish juggling everything that's at play here. Things are just too jumbled, and the story suffers as a result.

Aside from the bits where there's just too much going on at once, this is an overall very good book. I'd definitely recommend this book to fans of the game rather than fans of the novels. It's clear that Bungie wasn't settled about what they were doing for the second game by the time First Strike was going to press. Because of this, Nylund ties up all his loose ends. The ending of the book wraps everything up in such a neat package, that even if there are more books to come in the timeline, they can safely ignore the events of this book and pick up elsewhere. Things are just a little too neat when it's all said and done, which would make this a very forgettable read if you're not playing the game.

This is also not the best entry point for the series. If you're new to the Halo universe, you should either play the original Xbox game, or read The Fall of Reach. Fall of Reach serves as a prequel to the first videogame, and is notable for being one of the better books in the line. Fall of Reach is good enough that I recommend it to readers regardless of whether they play videogames or not.

If you want to continue on in the series, you would read First Strike before playing Halo 2 (or reading Ghosts of Onyx, which overlaps with Halo 2). It is not necessary to read First Strike to appreciate anything else in the Halo universe, and it doesn't even add much when read between playing Halo 1 and Halo 2. In this respect, First Strike ties The Flood for being one of the most expendable works in the series. Speaking of which, do not skip playing Halo: Combat Evolved in favor of reading The Flood, which is generally agreed to be one of the least well-written of the novels.

Highly recommended to Halo series completionists, First Strike comes weakly recommended to general sci-fi readers who may or may not play the games.

Nylund does it again with First Strike!

For some, the Halo Series has been at it's best when written by Eric Nylund. While the Flood certainly wasn't bad, combined with the fact that it was written by a different author with a plot that most of us knew, made it a little boring but nonetheless a more indepth version of Halo.

However, Nylund is back and so is his brilliant style of writing and conveying scenes of non-stop acting in First Strike.
Those who have loved the series so far will continue to be impressed with the newest novel until the one which will tell the story of Halo 2.

First Strike, picks up pretty much right where Halo (The Flood) leaves off with John and Cortana floating in space in the hope of finding survivors. They find survivors and embark on a quest to find Reach and possibly any Spartan's left on it. Without spoiling the book too much, John will have some backup for the upcoming war with the Covenant.

Overall, if you haven't read this book you're missing out on a great preview to Halo 2 and a great read for any science fiction fan as well.

Caveat Emptor

There is no question that, when it comes to informational books on the futures markets, Schwager is one of the best around. This book meets his high standard of quality and informativeness. I can recommend this book to anyone looking to broaden their knowledge of fundamental analysis and the guts of what affects supply and demand. But I can't recommend the book wholeheartedly, because basing trading decisions on fundamental analysis in itself is such a flawed approach in my opinion.

I used to pay a lot of attention to fundamentals (as a commodity broker). I would spend hours each day looking at news and research to get a feel for the reasoning behind the movement. After doing this for a while, I realized the inherent futility in the approach--if a trade sets up technically I will take it, unless there is some compelling reason not to--and if there is no technical confirmation, I won't take it, period. So fundamental analysis just doesn't play a starring role in either case. Nowadays, I still keep tabs on fundamentals, but mainly to avoid getting hit by a train; not taking action in front of a significant report, going short coffee in the freeze season, stuff like that. Below are a few reasons why my trading has taken on a strongly technical flavor:

1) Most daily news is worthless, and here is why: at any given time, there seem to be half a dozen arguments for being bearish on a market, and half a dozen arguments for being bullish.

When a market has a big move up and the reason isn't clear, the news services pick a couple of the bullish reasons and talk about those. If the market has a move down, they highlight some of the bearish reasons. It's total retrofitting, and thus usually a waste of time (in that there's not much of a way to turn that knowledge into profit).

Furthermore, the "traders" that the newsies interview are often just run of the mill clerks or brokers who don't really know anything special... or if they do know, they aren't telling. The classic filler explanations on the aftermarket newswires center around buzz phrases like "profit taking," "fund buying" and "fund selling." When you read about one of those three, the general translation is that the reporter dragged out an old standby because "who the heck knows" just doesn't make good copy.

2) Many of the best trades are the ones where the move starts before anyone knows why. Bruce Kovner talked about this concept in the first Market Wizards. If a breakout occurs when everyone is expecting it, then everyone is already in, and the odds are not as good because a lot of the buying (or selling) is already done. But if a breakout occurs and no one knows why, then there are 1) potentially powerful hidden reasons for the move, and (2) a whole group of traders who are not in the market yet, and may want or need to get in (or out if the move is against them) once the reason comes to light.

So, by deduction, if some of the best trades are the ones where fundamental reasons are not yet clear, then by paying attention to fundamentals too much, you run the risk of keeping yourself out of the best trades. You have to be willing to sometimes say, "I don't know why this setup is occurring, but the technicals are tellling me something interesting that the news might confirm later." Because the confirmation of "why" often comes after the window of opportunity has closed, you have to be willing to act before the fundamental reasons are clear.

3) Analysts are often biased and have a hesitancy to change views. When an analyst writes down his opinion on a piece of paper and then sends it out for everyone to see, part of his (or her) pride and reputation is staked on that opinion. It is a psychological truth that writing something down, and confirming it to other people, makes a person more committed to that belief. (Humans have a very strong desire to be consistent.) That make the typical analyst very hesitant to change his mind, even when the facts change. If an analyst is bullish one week and then the facts turn bearish the next week, the analyst should change his mind--but the odds are that he will not, because he will be thinking "well, if I was bullish last week and do a 180 to bearish this week, then I will look stupid."

But often that is the right thing to do! Especially for fundamental analysis, being flexible is very important. But most analysts are too worried about their reputations to have that flexibility. This is one reason trends unfold over time--because the masses are hesitant to change their minds quickly, even as it becomes more and more clear that they should.

4) Much of fundamental analysis is either incomplete or just plain wrong. Even if you have 90% of the puzzle pieces, the 10% that you are missing could be important enough to turn the whole picture upside down. Or if you somehow miraculously have all the pieces, you still have to figure out how to weight them properly and determine what the market is going to pay the most attention to. It is almost impossible to get all the facts correctly uncovered and assembled without overlooking anything.

And then there is always the possibility that something could come up by surprise that you were not prepared for. Different analysts with access to the same information will often have directly contradicting opinions on a market. What does that tell you? Generally the only time that the analysts are all on the same page is when the writing on the wall is obvious... and by that time, the move is usually almost done if not over. There is simply no free lunch.

5) Price--the ultimate value judgment of all underlying fundamentals--reveals itself in the technicals. The technicals don't lie (though they can certainly deceive), and they don't harbor an emotional bias. They represent the opinions of the entire market, with a heavier weighting towards the bigger and smarter players, and are thus more reliable than individual opinions subject to bias and error. For a fast mover such as myself, this is what needs to be known. As far as trading goes, I'm typically interested in the next three days or weeks... not the next three months or years.

For the above reasons, fundamental traders caveat emptor.

This Series "Schwager on Futures" is the biggest work has ever been written on futures trading. As a Futures Trader I advise everybody to read these books before to starts any real trading in Futures, that if not taken in the proper way can be very painfull. As a Member of IFTA(International federation Of Tecnical Analisys)I suggest you to read it joint with John Murphy's "Technical Analisys f Futures Markets" and "Intermarket Technical Analisys" this will give you a integral knowledge of Futures Environment that is what you need on your Trading philosophy. I always let these books on my desk because I need them so many times during my trading day. THEY ARE A REAL REFERENCE. The good thing of this series is that you can test your comprension by the various study guides. Reading the book about "Managed Trading" You can even get able to judge the returns of the various CTA and decide when it is better to invest in them and to whom give your money.Probably you are not be interested in the Fundamental analisys book but remember, especially in the commodities markets, EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING TO TRADE TECHNICALLY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND FUNDAMENTAL ANALISYS!!! Schwager is very indepth...sometimes too indepth.

This is the most comprehensive books on Fundamental Analysis that I have ever seen. This book along with Schwager's Technical Analysis book are required reading for new futures brokers that I hire to my firm.
Mr.Schwager and Mr.Turner have put a very strong mathematical spin on how fundamental analysis can be accomplished. They dissect government trade reports and analyst reports and put an empirical face on the nebulus act of fundamental analysis.
In the preface of the book Mr.Schwager admits that fundamental analysis is not quite accurate. Which begs the question, "why write such a complex book?"
This book is not for the faint of heart, nor is it light reading. It is quite indepth and for the most part above the heads of many beginning futures investors. In order to understand any of the examples you have to have solid trading reference points in your personal trading life.
I recommended it for intermediate traders primarily.
After being involved with futures for 11 years and authoring three books on the subject, I am always impressed at Mr.Schwager thoroughness in researching.

I enjoyed the raw animus

I first read this Jack London book fifty-five years ago. It inspired me to read more books and especially all of the London books. I enjoyed the raw animus, the Alaska wilderness, and the struggle to survive. I love adventure, the outdoors, dogs, hunting, fishing, and hiking. Consequently, this book was a perfect start for me.

Buck is a beloved character and the book is very well written - so well, that I could suggest it as a writing clinic in itself! Highly recommended. The Call of the Wild

Good Intro to NE for Health Physicists

Currently reading this book. So far, it is a great introduction to Nuclear Engineering. As a health physicist with no formal NE education, it covers relevant topics in the nuclear industry. Although a bit dated, this version still conveys essential information for newcomers to reactor operations.

This is one of the few books that through college I actually liked. Not to say that I read it from cover to cover, but the parts I did to read were well put and not as dry as other textbooks out there. I'm keeping this one despite it costing me an arm and a leg.

Great Overview Book for PE and Defense Exam Preparation

This book is a comprehensive overview of nuclear engineering topics. It is that ONE book if you must rely on just one. It is similar to the Glasstone book but newer and with better text. The explanations in the Reactor Physics and Kinetics chapters are great and easy to understand. I wish I'd had this book as an undergraduate; that Reactor Analysis course would have been much more understandable!
