Great General Programming Book, Lacks in OOP for experienced Programmers

This a good read for beginner- to intermediate- JavaScript programmers, and also as a primer for programmers coming from other languages C-based languages. The first part of the book focuses on basic JavaScript - primitives, functions, and objects. It progresses to overview of prototyping and inheritance - more advanced topics but still fairly general. The best thing about the book in general is that it abstracts programming JavaScript away from the strictly web based, client-side approach. There are great sections on things like self-invoking anonymous functions, variable hoisting, overloading methods, and a solid but not extensive overview of built in functions.

The best chapter for the true object-oriented enthusiast will be the chapter on design patterns. It first focuses on general best practices and patterns immediately involved with JavaScript, and progresses to the traditional Singleton, Factory, Observer, and Decorator patterns as they apply to JavaScript. Anyone who has implemented these patterns in other languages will find this to be the meat and potatoes of the book. Appendices are pretty standard by JavaScript book standards - reserved words, built in functions, built in objects, and regular expressions.

Overall - a 4/5 for a solid exposure to programming JavaScript, but it loses a point for not truly getting to the nitty gritty of OOP that would be expected by someone coming from Ruby, C#, or Java.

Ben Penglase’s ethnography goes beyond these perspectives to look at how the people of Caxambu themselves experience violence.�
Although the favela is often seen as a war zone, the residents are linked to each other through bonds of kinship and friendship. In addition, residents often take pride in homes and public spaces that they have built and used over generations. Penglase notes that despite poverty, their lives are not completely defined by illegal violence or deprivation. He argues that urban violence and a larger context of inequality create a social world that is deeply contradictory and ambivalent. The unpredictability and instability of daily experiences result in disagreements and tensions, but the residents also experience their neighborhood as a place of social intimacy. As a result, the social world of the neighborhood is both a place of danger and safety. �

About the Author

Erian A. Baskharone, Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University, and a member of the Rotordynamics/Turbomachinery Laboratory Faculty. He is a member of the ASME Turbomachinery Executive Committee. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Baskharone became a Senior Engineer with Allied-Signal Corporation (currently Honeywell Aerospace Corporation), responsible for the aerodynamic design of various turbofan and turboprop engines. His research covered a wide spectrum of turbomachinery topics, including unsteady stator/rotor flow interaction, and the fluid-induced vibration problem in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Dr. Baskharone’s perturbation approach to the problem of turbomachinery fluid-induced vibration was a significant breakthrough. He is the recipient of the General Dynamics Award of Excellence in Engineering Teaching (1991) and the Amoco Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching (1992).

About the Author
As you may have noticed by now, Mark is a breed all his own. Some may call his style unconventional, and the rest would probably agree! Mark got his start as a business owner early in life. He was only 10 years old when he hit the streets with a bucket and some soap and began a weekly car wash service for his neighbors. That led to his first “real” job with a lawn maintenance company at age 14. Mark was a hard worker. One of Mark’s mottos is, “If it’s worth doing, then it is worth overdoing.” While this is not the balanced approach he takes with his clients now, it might explain his “achiever” mindset in everything he does. At 17 years old, he decided he was ready for some independence; he moved out and got his own apartment while finishing high school. He graduated high school Salutatorian. That is second out of his entire class. After high school, he did not slow down. Mark put himself through college while working as a self-employed tile contractor and purchased his first home when he was 21 years old. While on a tile job, Mark was scouted to become a model and worked in the US and Europe for about 8 years. He was on television, on magazine covers, and inside more catalogs than I can count. Seeing him on billboards was fun but odd. Following his time in Europe, he worked in sales and marketing with a new product development firm. Never one to let an opportunity pass him by, he left that lucrative position to earn his real estate license, become a loan officer, and travel with a real estate investment firm. When the real estate market crashed, Mark changed direction. He headed back to college to expand his accounting, bookkeeping, and tax preparation knowledge where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Accountancy. So what does Mark do for fun? Aside from loving the fact that he is married to his best friend and business partner, he has the cutest daughter ever and three amazing stepsons. Mark loves life. He loves traveling and photography but cannot go more than a day or two without surfing. Mark loves to play tennis, or golf, or volleyball, or soccer, or ping pong, or pretty much any sport. Heck, he has even managed to make movie watching a sport. While not a big fan of reading, he still manages to read 1-2 hours a day. He works hard and plays hard, is abundantly humble, curiously intelligent, and savagely good-looking. If you are starting a business get this book!

I've been confused about how to start a business for years. I was a little skeptical when I was told this book would help me. It's was amazing how easy this book makes it. Within 30 minutes of reading I knew what I need to do for the type of business I have created. It really takes the confusion out and form a very clear outline for people who no nothing about starting up a business, like me...a guitar player.
