Foundation Document for the Sisters who were later connected with the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland

I doubt anyone in the world will be interested in this book aside from me but I'll write a review for it anyway. This book is the foundation document for the Sisters who later got into such trouble in Ireland for running the Magdalen Laundries. They weren't the only Order that did so but they actually set the framework in place. The foundress (who is a Saint) arranged for girls who weren't suitable to enter the Sisters of the Good Shepherd could still enter a modified form of religious life (sort of) - the Magdalens. I guess back in the day (mid 1800's) girls who were illegitimate or of "ill repute" could not usually enter religious orders without a dispensation of some sort. Even the well known St. Therese of Lisieux wrote once she had thought of entering the Magdalenes so she could live among the least of all. This book is an exact copy of the original and the print is really big for some reason. And why Forgotten Books decided to publish it is beyond me. But if you are studying the Magdalen Laundries in Ireland this book might be helpful as background information.

Margaret Furtado, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., a registered and licensed dietitian-nutritionist with almost 20 years' clinical experience, is currently part of the multidisciplinary team at the Massachusetts General Hospital-MGH Weight Center, where she counsels patients on both medical and surgical weight loss (including gastric bypass and gastric banding procedures). Prior to working at MGH, Ms. Furtado spent 4 years working at Tuftss New England Medical Center's (NEMC) Obesity Consult Center, providing both individual and group consultations for gastric bypass, gastric banding and BPD surgery patients. Margaret earned her Master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Florida International University in Miami, FL., and her B.S. degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Rhode Island. Pan-Seared Steak Tips with Mushroom Gravy

JOE’S TIP: Try serving this delicious dish with rice or pasta and a side of sauteed vegetables.

TEXTURE: Regular

INGREDIENTS

—Cooking spray

—1 pound (455 g) sirloin steak, cut into 1/2-inch (1.25-cm) pieces

—1 tablespoon (15 ml) extra-virgin olive oil

—2 tablespoons (20 g) finely minced shallots

—1 package (8 ounces, or 227 g) baby portabella mushrooms, sliced

—1 teaspoon garlic, minced

—1 tablespoon (15 ml) low-sodium soy sauce

—3 tablespoons (23 g) whole-wheat flour

—1 1/2 cups (355 ml) low-fat, low-sodium beef broth

—1/2 teaspoon black pepper

—1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

—1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

DIRECTIONS

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Coat the skillet with the cooking spray and brown the steak on all sides. Remove from the pan, and cover.

Heat the olive oil in the pan and then add the shallots and mushrooms; saut� for approximately 4 minutes, or until the mushrooms and shallots are cooked through. Next, add the garlic and saut� for another 30 seconds. Stir in the soy sauce. Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture, and cook for approximately 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in the beef broth. Add the pepper, salt, and thyme, and bring to a simmer. Cook for approximately 4 to 5 minutes, or until the mixture is thickened. Add the beef back to the pan and cook for another minute.

YIELD: Makes 6 (about 3⁄4-cup) servings.

Disappointed, Would Not Recommend

I am very disappointed in this cookbook. The "look inside this book" was very misleading and many of the bad reviews ring very true, after all. I will preface this with I am a big fan of low carb, Primal Blueprint, and Paleo/Whole30 ways of eating and, after surgery, I know this is the recommendation and what I'm looking forward to sticking with, just in much smaller and lower-in-fat portions. Well, although uber-low-fat, almost all of the recipes are useless to me and the information that I can use is in need of carb/process foods tweaks and/or pretty much 'no-brainer'-- except using cottage cheese as a base in salad dressing recipes, because that was one and only tip I did pick up, reading this book. But, if you were hoping to follow a low-carb or whole foods lifestyle after surgery, this is not your book.
This was one of the two books recommended to me by my bariatric surgery center. The first book, eating well after weight loss surgery, was packed with creative recipes-- not one had potatoes, white bread, and sugar needlessly crammed into nearly every recipe. The other books I've bought for WLS cooking, although not as good as that book, in my opinion, also contain very good choice whole food ingredients. In this book, however, even the tomato soup has potatoes as one of the main ingredients (why would you do that?), and even some egg recipes have bread. There is an entire breakfast chapter devoted to omelets with basic ingredients and fancy names, a couple with bread, a cream of wheat recipe where you simply add protein powder, and I don't need to pay for a book to know that tip, French toast, using bread and basically your average French toast, which again, you don't need a recipe book for, and then pages upon pages of muffins using flour and other ingredients we're told to avoid. The shakes chapter is another basic, non-creative, needlessly-sugary-ingredient list of recipes. The salads have a lot more fruit and sugary ingredients than the other WLS cookbooks. A large chapter is devoted to sandwiches, with breads, and not really anything worth using w/o the breads because they are so basic. Even the soups are full of ingredients like rice, potatoes, macaroni, and flour. Bread crumbs are everywhere, so many places they just don't need to be. Corn meal makes appearances too. I hate to tear anyone's hard work apart but, flipping through the entire book, almost all of these recipes in this book are very carb-y and just basic, boring, no-brainer recipes with no creativity and not good choices. I would not recommend this book to anyone and plan to share my poor opinion of it to my surgeon, dietician, support groups, and boards.

As a Bariatric Support Group Leader of LIPO (Long Island Post Ops) a 501 (c) 3 organization, I am always looking for good bariatric friendly recipes to share and this book is a true winner!
I encourage ALL bariatric patients (or anybody who is in need of good healthy recipes) to look no further and add this to your shopping cart as you will not be disappointed!
From Broccoli Raab to Sloppy Joes to Almond Milk Rice Pudding with Dried Cranberries....these along with numerous other amazing recipes can be found in this book.
Lastly, I am especially grateful that noted in this book are meal plans for the various stages after surgery along with helpful hints to focus on a healthy and happy post operative journey.
Kudos to Margaret M. Furtado, Lynette Schultz and Chef Joseph Ewing!

Worst Organized Cookbook Ever!

The recipes in this cookbook seem to be workable and appealing enough, and the pictures are pretty, but the organization is so ludicrous that I tossed it in the trashcan in disgust. First of all, the index is totally worthless, since it lists the recipes by name and not by main ingredient. And the table of contents has chapter headings such as "Dinners","Lunches", etc. The upshoot is that if you're looking for a recipe for cooking salmon, you must thumb through the entire book to find "Leftover Salmon Sandwich" (page 97), "Leftover Salmon Salad" (page 139), "Smoked Salmon Dip" (page 170), "Salmon with Ginger Teriyaki Sauce" (page 221) - you get the idea. Nowhere in the index is a heading of "salmon" or even "fish". You have to look under "L" for Leftover, under "Smoked", etc. Not user friendly at all!

Good, well-rounded, heavy read.

This a great book for Media Law and Ethics. It has a lot of great case references that make it easier to understand concepts and a great way to reference back. The only downside is that it is quite a heavy read because there is so much information packed into it, so I found myself re-reading a lot to let it sink in.

Magnetic: The Art and Science of Engagement
Jim Collins called it the "Power of And" Tuttle and Bergeron say it is "time for and." This book shows how some of Americas leading 'positive deviant' museums have become "high performance institutions with a superior ability to attract and retain the resources necessary to deliver sustained programmatic excellence and growth over time." And, it should be said, there are hundreds more on this path. As Phelan Fretz, Director of ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center, Burlington, VT said: "Just finished reading the first three chapters of Magnetic. The book is what Jim Collins never delivered for the nonprofits/museums industry: they have stock markets; for us, relationships are our commodity. A round of applause!"

Tuttle and Bergeron bring business leadership and organizational research and deftly apply their own deep knowledge of the museum landscape: why, where, and how does growth make sense? What about quality in our terms: collections, facilities, programs? How to create loyalty beyond reason. This series keeps getting better

Oh wow where do i start? Linc is obsessed with porn star 'Eve Kelly', so when he sees she's coming to an event, he's determined to go meet her and get her out his system once and for all. Seeing her on stage, it's like she's a different woman, she seems uncomfortable and shy. Paying for a lap dance, Linc can't wait to get up close and personal with 'Eve'.....Except 'Eve' is really passed out on a bed and sister Claire is trying to get through her ordeal to help save her sisters a$$. Walking in to give a private dance, Claire isn't expecting the gorgeous, sexy MMA fighter to be the one waiting for her and sparks fly between them. This book has it all, it's hot, sweet, sexy and funny. I was crying with laughter within the first few pages, Linc is a one of a kind, mr all round perfect, kinda guy. Claire is a sweetheart, i loved her character, loved the way she was family first but i could have slapped her for keeping secrets. With a fantastic story that will keep you turning those pages, this is yet another brilliant book from this author. I don't know how she makes each Cocky Cage fighter better than the last but she continues to do so. Another 5 star book i can't wait for the next book

Mesmerizing, A Knockout

Lets get the technical stuff out of the way--I had the privilege of obtaining an ARC in exchange for an honest review. If I don't like a book, I don't finish it. Therefore no review. Linc was read until the beautiful epilogue came to an end. I still looked for more. Like a fine wine, this series just keeps getting better and better. I really liked Jax. Jude touched my heart, but Linc tops them both. If you haven't read this series what is stopping you?? It has romance, challenges, excitement, tension, men fighting with no shirts and getting sweaty, and some really super hot gorgeous drool worthy guys. If I could only use one word to Describe the book, it would be "mesmerizing". With Linc I got humor and lots of finger crossing for the outcome I wanted. I can't begin to express how happy I was when one of my wishes came true. Karma is a meany and its name is Linc. This book has the usual boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy wins girl back concept. It is how it happens that makes this book so fantastic. From page one I snickered, I giggled, I swooned and I cried. I also got creeped out. One of the characters just gave me the heebie jeebies. Lane's detailed description had me wanting to shower in bleach. Creepy doesn't begin to describe the guy nicknamed Slick Rick by Linc.

Sweet Good Ol' Boy MMA fighter falls in love with Innocent Look-a-Like sister of a Porn Star

I am so addicted to the MMA heroes in the Cocky Cage Fighters series, even though I don't enjoy really enjoy the sport. With every book I love the Hero of that one more than the previous one. Linc is the Sweet Southern Fighter with the Heart of Gold who has an Obsession for a porn star. He's not proud of it and he wants to get over it by any means possible. The Heroine is a Porn Star for a night ... or two ... or more against her will only because she shares the same looks as her sister the real porn star. It's on that first night of her substitution that the Heroine, Claire, meets the Hero, Linc. Linc appeared in the previous novel in the Cocky Cage Fighters series and was an adorable, funny, and Hot big brother character. I couldn't help falling in love with him. In this novel he shows what a true Romantic he is - he dives all in without looking. Claire is cautious and careful due to her sister and brother's penchant for trouble, she is surrounded by sharks. She's at the point where she's struggling to keep them from dragging her down. She is pushed to the point in which she feels she has to abandon her moral code in order to save her sister's screw up and pose as a porn star - she meets Linc. Their "Meet Cute" is a story that they are going to have to change for the grandkids. Their chemical reaction is immediate and truly combustible - we are talking e-reader melting HOT. They are thrown together by luck and at the same time used by dangerous sharks who bring them even closer. Just as they overcome a tragic even it also tears them apart.
I love this book in the Cocky Cage Fighter series! The character of Linc was my favorite in the previous novel. I'm a geek so when I learned that Linc's parents named him after the character in the video game "Zelda" I was a goner. Also, throughout "Linc" the character Jude calls him Zelda constantly - hilarious! But Lane Hart has created a sweet good ol' boy with a heart of gold MMA cage fighter. A true romantic and protector but an Alpha hero as well. Claire is a strong heroine the caretaker of her siblings constantly trying to keep them on the straight and narrow path - putting their needs before her own. Finding a good man like Linc is too good to be true - a Cinderella story. This book is sweet, sexy, and thrilling. The secondary characters - the other fighters at the gym, who you know are going to have their own novels - are awesome. I definitely love this series, each installment is better than the last.
