amazing book. great connection to nolan's movies

I won't say a lot but this novel is ten tims better than the animatd film. Not only does it connect and bridge Batman Begins and The Dark Knight properly but it is also its own story much like both awesome films directed by Christopher Nolan.

Most of the main story does take a little time to get to the point but for good reason. The events of Batman Beginsis referenced well though I wish Joker and Harvey Dent would have been mentioned too. Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Deadshothave great scenes and development. Even The Man in Black has his moments during the first 6 chapters. Over all it is a recommended read for fans of Batman and Nolan's take on Batman.

About the Author
Don Richard Riso, M.A. is the foremost writer and developer of the Enneagram in the world today. The most-published and best-selling author in the field, he is an internatioinally recognized authority on the subject. He is the president of Enneagram Personality Types, Inc., and founder of The Enneagram Institute. He has been teaching the Enneagram for more than twenty years, pioneering a revolutionary new approach to ego psychology through his 1977 discovery of the Levels of Development. His four best-selling books are available in British, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and French editions. Mr. Riso was a Jesuit for thirteen years, holds degrees in English and philosophy, was elected to the Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu, and was a Ford Foundation Fellow at Stanford University in communications (social psychology).

good starting point to figure out what type you are

The enneagram is a personality typing system; individuals fall into one of nine personality types (reformer, helper, motivator, artist, thinker, loyalist, generalist, leader or peacemaker). Individuals can predict & analyze their thoughts & behavior based on their personality type. When I first learned about enneagram, I thought it was some kind of hocus-pocus new-agey alternative fluff, but the typing system has a strong historical grounding and it makes so much sense.
This book is helpful if you're new to the concept of enneagram, or if you're familiar with the enneagram but want to discovery or confirm your type. I would not recommend it if you know your enneagram personality type already and are interested in learning about the type . The book provides a simple 144-question survey somewhat remniscent of those interest tests we all took in high school (would you prefer to play tennis or keep score in a tennis match? conduct research in a lab or sell books?). Each question gives two choices; you must choose one -- sometimes it is tough, but the forced choice leads to an answer.
The book is most useful as a typing and diagnostic tool. The descriptions of the nine different personality types are short, barely enough to scratch the surface. Once you know your type, you'll probably want to consult one of Riso's other works to learn more about what the type means.

Valuable insight.

I must say that I disagree with the earlier negative review. I was turned on to the Enneagram and Mr. Riso's work by a friend and have been a supporter ever since. This is not about a cult religion or an alternative belief system. It is about seeing the whole picture of yourself, positives and negatives. The Enneagram test enabled me to see the things about myself that I didn't want to see and the things that friends and family may not want to tell you personally. An invaluable tool for self discovery. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the personality type descriptions tend to be a little short. (A problem remedied by Mr. Riso's book "Personality Types"). For those looking for a quicker read, I highly recommend this book. If a more insightful description of your personality type is what you are looking for, try Mr. Riso's book "Personality Types".

Very helpful at determining personality type

This test will either tell you what your type is, or help you narrow it down to a choice of two. You can also take the test answering as you think an acquaintance would answer, giving a strong clue to that person's type. I only came across one case where the test wasn't helpful, where an individual scored evenly for almost every type. In my case, a different enneagram test pointed to an incorrect type, but this test pointed correctly at my type. And that's the purpose of the book.

Gloria Konig Fiero was born and raised in New York City. She earned her Masters degree in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley, and her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities at the Florida State University. She has written and lectured extensively on medieval and renaissance topics and on the arts of both East and West as they reflect the human condition. Pretty good, for a textbook

I rented this book for my Humanities 201 class, and I thought that it was gonna be the exact same as most other textbooks: boringly written in boring style with boringly boring boredom printed everywhere. This one isn't like that! It's hard to make a textbook on history interesting but the author of this book sure gave it a shot and it turned out pretty well. Instead of just listing events it talks more about how cultures and civilizations influenced each other across the globe and through the years. It is much easier to learn about humanity when you're focussing on the bigger picture, not looking at the little pieces with scrutiny. There are excerpts from historical texts to add a sense of authenticity to the lessons, and the online resources are actually very helpful as well.

I know that if you're getting this for a college class you probably don't have a choice on what book to buy, but if you're assigned this one then it won't be bad at all!

If the purpose of these works is to reveal to the reader an objective picture of the life and ministry of Jesus, quite a number are useless while a majority are marginally to moderately useful. Albert Schweitzer famously disposed of most of the first quest for the historical Jesus by German scholars of the nineteenth century in one terse sentence. The second quest following Bultmann and Dibelius found that a true picture was unobtainable considering the source information available. And, the third quest that commenced in or shortly before the nineteen seventies has produced a wide variety of different and mutually incompatible results. It is a tribute to the pluralism of our contemporary society that in this third quest we can find a portrait of Jesus to suit any one's needs and prejudices. I have read or reread over sixty works in this cycle of study on the topic of the historical Jesus with well over forty of these works being from the third quest. And at this point, I am inclined to agree with Willian E. Arnal's assessment that the third quest is just about as abject a failure as were the first two.

This book is the work of a mature scholar at the height of his powers. Conclusory assumptions appear to be totally missing from this work. This book is a methodical presentation of fact, theory, and speculative deduction that is honest in separating fact from opinion. The reader is invited to form his own interpretations by interacting with the author's methodological practices, operating theories, and factual presentations. However, for the reader to accomplish this, they need to be nearly as well informed on the material covered as is the author. Buchanan's writing is crisp, clear, and easily understandable. But, this is a dense scholarly book that deserves and demands careful consideration to be fully appreciated and engaged. The first chapter is a inquiry into the meaning of the terms "Kingdom of God" and the "Kingdom of Heaven" in the Old Testament, Targumim, New Testament, and Rabbinic literature. The author finds these phrases connote the promised land under Jewish control and that all the titles of Jesus in the N.T pertain to kingship. Next is a technical section on "Rhetoricians, Philosophers, and Literary Forms." Buchanan presents an advanced form criticism based on literary conventions and usages in antiquity. He finds the chreia to be a basically trustworthy device that was relied upon by ancient historians for reliable information. Material so encapsulated retained its accuracy over periods of time spanning many centuries. The New Testament is loaded with chreias that in all likelihood represent the true teachings of Jesus.

Mindful of the above conclusion regarding the "Kingdom," the author provides an analysis of Jesus' ministry in the next five chapters. Each chapter tries to isolate one aspect of that ministry and investigate it by considering the chreias, parables, and other materials that pertain. Buchanan finds in Jesus a political messiah planning for the military removal of the occupying power from the promised land so as to bring the "Kingdom of God" to earth. However, the author readily admits that in the ministry of Jesus no overt acts of a revolutionary character took place with the possible exception of the cleansing of the Temple. Furthermore, the immediate transition upon Jesus' death of His movement into pacifistic non-violence is acknowledged. While I am dubious about the proposition of Jesus as a military Messiah, the handling and analysis of the N. T. and other source materials is much of the time extremely fresh, exciting, and persuasive. In the chapter, "Law and Liberty," a remarkably insightful exposition of Jesus' conflicts with the Levitical law is provided. The chapter, "The Royal Treasury," breaks new ground on the topic of repentance and forgiveness. Following these chapters Buchanan provides a technical explanation on "Cycles of Time and Their Signs" which provides the basis for the closing section on "The Church Writes History." It is clearly explained that the ancients, both Greek and Semitic, viewed history as a cyclical process. Once this fact is established, a clear presentation is provided of how traditions, chreias, parables, and other materials were integrated by standard literary conventions and devices to produce the gospels.

Elsewhere, I have supported the concept of a major political component in Jesus' ministry. Therefore, Buchanan's analysis of Jesus' aims is not alien to my thinking. However, I find R. David Kaylor's profile of a pacifistic, political messiah more persuasive. But, this ultimately begs the question. If Buchanan's critical analysis of the applicable ancient literature is correct, a good deal of other third quest scholarship is of questionable value. And, in my opinion, much of the literary critical analysis presented in "Jesus: The King and His Kingdom" is not only correct but often times brilliant and occasionally magisterial. Failure to deal with Buchanan's work and its implicit dismantlement of much later scholarship on the topic may lead to blind spots in any interested party's assessment of the historical Jesus. This book demonstrates that the critical analysis of the Jesus Seminar is anachronistic and, therefore, largely counterproductive. Equally, the other great contemporary school of thought which presents us with a Jesus thoroughly at home in first century CE Pharisaic Judaism is shown to be factually incorrect in significant ways. As with all purely historical considerations of the career of Jesus, this book does not answer questions about the universal Christ of faith. However, it should be noted that a political take on the the earthly ministry of Jesus does not in any way deny the possibility of the deified Jesus Christ. This book should be considered mandatory reading for students and scholars concerned with the historical Jesus. This is a book that I shall read again from time to time.

Original Ideas From Meticulous Scholarship

George Wesley Buchanan believes that Bible scholars haven't had the courage to face the historical Jesus, or at least to communicate the truth about Jesus to ordinary Christians.
He uses form criticism to discover what can be known about Jesus. I learned everything I know about "chreias" from this book. Chreias are memory devices Greek rhetoricians used. Buchanan believes that Bible writers remembered events in Jesus's life in chreia form. He believes he can identify them where they occur, and that chreia portions of the Gospels can be trusted as reliable. This provides an answer to the synoptic problem.
Using both Christian and non-Christian literature, he traces chreias in literature through hundreds of years, showing how the meaning remained the same, but the wording varied .
Buchanan believes that parables are less reliably preserved than chreias. He notices hints of military terminology in the parables. This leads him to suspect that Reimarus was too quickly dismissed, and that at least at one time Jesus probably was organizing an insurrection against the Romans.
He has a chapter on cycles of time that helps explain eschatological thinking during Bible times.
The book is much better than this review. Buchanan presents lots of data, but tries not to be dogmatic. In spite of the depressing conclusions that Buchanan seems to reach about Jesus, you should read the book. You won't stay up nights any more wondering why Matthew, Mark, and Luke report the same events in different words after reading about chreias.
None of Buchanan's books are boring, and none are a rehash of what others have said before him. They are always full of original thought and interesting data.

Otso Ovaskainen obtained his PhD in mathematics in 1998 at the Helsinki University of Technology. To combine his mathematical training with his interest in ecology, he did his postdoctoral training with Professor Ilkka Hanski in Helsinki University and with Professor Bryan Grenfell in Cambridge University. He became a research fellow funded by the Academy of Finland in 2003, at which time he founded the Mathematical Biology Group, which is part of Ilkka Hanski's Metapopulation Research Centre. He became a professor in Helsinki University in 2009, and a visiting professor in Trondheim University in 2014. He is broadly interested in mathematical and statistical approaches in ecology and evolutionary biology.

Henrik de Knegt obtained his PhD in ecology in 2010 at Wageningen University (the Netherlands), after which he moved to Finland as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki. He is broadly interested in spatial ecology, especially the small-scale mechanisms behind the movement and habitat selection of organisms. This is because the movement process couples organisms to their spatial-temporal environment, and is vital to coupling individual-level behaviour to population-level dynamics. He recently moved back to the Netherlands where his work at Wageningen University aims at contributing to the prevention of rhino poaching, through the development of a response system that highlights where and when poaching is taking place, based on anomalies in animal movement patterns that might signal poaching-induced disturbances.

Maria del Mar Delgado did her degree in Biology at the University of Seville (Spain), and then a PhD in ecology at Donana Biological Station (CSIC, Spain). She then moved to Finland where she has spent her last seven years as a postdoctoral researcher. She is interested in a wide array of issues within behavioural and evolutionary ecology, biodiversity and conservation biology. The main goal of her scientific trajectory is to carry out multidisciplinary, synthetic ecological and evolutionary research with a strong collaborative basis. Ecology and evolution are essentially trans-disciplinary areas, and thus she has always been interested in combining experimental, theoretical, and observational approaches. The main focus of her research is on gaining an integrated understanding of the structure and dynamics of natural populations and communities by combining rigorous statistical analyses with long-term monitoring data.

One of the best (ACTUALIZED) introductory books on spatial ecology

This is a Must-Read book for all ecologists working with spatially explicit problems. In my opinion, since space is an inherent condition in which ecological processes take place, ecologists must have at least a basic knowledge of the present paradigms and basic methods, which are all included in this book. It would be a perfect textbook, not only for graduate-level but also for undergraduate-level courses. Some basic quantitative knowledge is required, which is very briefly covered in the Appendices A and B, and must be studied with other good textbook as Hobbs & Hooten (2015: Bayesian Models: A Statistical Primer for Ecologists) which is another must- and easy-to-read book.

- Has a good balance of theory and methods.
- Has good and simple examples.
- Has both, classic and recent references
- Keeps things simple.
Cons: - Some secondary paradigms are not present or even commented (Maybe it was the authors' decision to keep the book short).

Haunting and unforgetable

Oh my, what a special story. I had to read it twice through because I wasn't ready to let it go after the first time. It has stayed with me long after. Somehow, this classic old West story transcends the genre and heads straight to high literature. L'Amour's spare style is especially effective crafting this tender, tough, touching story of two strong people facing the extreme struggles to survive in a time & place which breaks many but offers hope and new possibilities to those determined to make a new life. The last few chapters were especially powerful. The tumbleweeds! Wow!!

Possibly our favorite L'amour Western!

This is probably our favorite L'amour western. It is the one we buy and give to couples to start them reading. We own ALL the L'amour westerns and read them over and over. My husband reads them to me in bed every night. It's much nicer than listening to the news! Just a chapter or two. I love listening to his voice. And most of them have a love interest that is fun for couples. You will enjoy this story and when you're done you'll never again view a tumbling tumbleweed the same old way!

This is one of my favorite Louis L'Amour books. Saw the TV movie when it first aired many years ago. Loved the movie. Sam Elliot and Katherine Ross are 2 of my favorite actors. This movie was so well done I had to read the book. Very simple story about good people.

photography seeing animals in a new light

Horenstein takes photographs of animals, but he is not a naturalist. The photographs were taken in zoos and aquariums. While one might think this would give them a certain "staged" quality or limitation, an artificiality or familiarity as photographs, this is not the case--far from it. The photographs were exhibited (through June 2008) at the Harvard Museum of Natural History as a part of its "lessons in looking" project. This project aimed at being provocative and "chang[ing] the frame" of viewers' experiences with nature photography; as the Museum's Director Elisabeth Werby explains in her Foreword. Horenstein's 64 duotone photographs of animals--actually mostly parts of animals--patently work toward this end.

This skilled, imaginative, idiosyncratic photographer focuses sharply on a specific part, or a detail, of an animal. Such sharp focus--as in some photographs by Edward Weston, for example--leaves the subject so that the viewer does not easily recognize it. Horenstein does not go this far, however. His aim is not to demonstrate the power of the camera to microscopically hone in on a subject in such a way that one cannot recognize it; but rather to enlarge the viewer's awareness of and connection with his subjects of animals. The photographs are a kind of synecdoche. The parts of an animal Horenstein focuses on are usually ones the viewer associates with it from seeing many ordinary photographs or films of it or from school classes in the world of nature. The viewer knows an octopus from a tentacle lined with suction cups; an Emperor penguin from its elongated white belly; a dolphin from its sleek, bulbous shape.

Horenstein is patient, too. Since "you can't tell an elephant where to stand [or] ask a skate to smile...you must be very patient and wait" for the opportunity to take a good picture, he tells in his Photographer's Note. But there's more than simply waiting for the right moment. The photographer achieves his extraordinary effects by using macro lenses and by working with grainy, black-and-white film, then developing it in sepia to give it "an old school, timeless feel." It works: The combination of photographs which are at once familiar and challenging and technicalities of film and development used make a unique, lingering impression. It is unlikely most viewers will see the animals in Horenstein's photographs ever again without seeing them or thinking about them in some respect as they were led to see and consider them with these photographs.

This is a lovely book, making excellent use of the qualities of black and white photography.
There is great variety in the subjects, but a common simplifying approach to all of them.
Lighting and cropping transform these creatures to magical images and lead the viewer to
seeing them in new and unusual ways.
