Jack and Carrie are lost souls. Jack is an eminent university lecturer in English Literature who suffers from quadriplegia after a spinal cord injury in his late teens. A great love story

Finally a book which talks to us, lucky ones, who live a fulfilling love life with our "special" special ones! There aren't too many of this kind of books.

Mrs. Darkins did really do her research, and a portrayal of the life (and love life) of her quadriplegic (tetraplegic for the European) hero is really accurate.

How many times did I get annoyed with books where the misconceptions regarding disability interfered with the possibility to enjoy a great story? How many times did I put down a book confused "What is the writer talking about? It just does not work like this."

In this novel it never happened. I could concentrate on the sweet love story, feeling comfortable with their everyday mechanics. The book is a very fast and easy read - I devoured in two days (OK, I know I should have written "at a go", but I have a busy life, I cannot spend hours only reading...). And I needed this relaxation right after a demanding exam.

This book could be a nice read for anyone who likes the wounded hero genre, but also for those who are looking for a refreshing little love story (and won't be discouraged by the uncommon hero).

Not a bad story

As a nurse, I am fairly well versed on the limitations of those suffering from quadriplegia, but I would have enjoyed more romance than a couple teenage style make out sessions . I would have found it more realistic had the author allowed Jack & Carrie to negotiate some of Jack's sexual limitations and revel in their ability to create a beautiful fulfilling intimacy despite them. I never got the impression Jack had attempted much if any intimate relationship since his accident. It would have been nice to experience with Jack what he was in fact capable of.
I also felt there was a lack of exploration of each other's pasts. The author mentioned Jack's tracheotomy & surgical scars but never mentioned many details of his accident or how he felt about it. Carrie didn't divulge much about her past to Jack either. There was just a depth about that I felt was missing.
What was there I enjoyed.

Wonderful

Set in an English university town, this romance featuring a Literature professor hero with a C6 spinal cord injury and a 24 year old biology undergraduate student heroine who comes to live with him as his home care provider is compelling as we watch our hero who hasn't attempted a deeply intimate relationship in some time and a heroine who has many emotionial scars from a childhood in and out of foster care and a neglectful family to really trust anyone to think she is of value fall in love.

The writer does wonderful work here with the romance and physicality of love with these characters. The love story is believable and sexy and tender.

Less well done are the secondary characters who while interesting are created with much broader strokes and don't always behave in ways that follow suit or are worked out and there is more that could be done with the leads as well.

I would have liked to see more time between the last chapter and the epilogue in couple time.

However, overall, it is a very good romance, human, passionate, and tangible.

I look forward to reading more from this writer.

His 'superb new translation' (William Boyd - "Guardian") of Gogol's "Dead Souls" was published in 2008.

Highly recommend for anyone interested in getting into a NoSQL or Mongo specifically.

I've really enjoyed this book. My favorite part by far is the tech comparison in the early chapters. The authors go over the pros and cons of MongoDB and describe the use cases for it, and it's competitors. The examples are all in Ruby, but are readable (even for a JS dev). I was up and running in ~5 minutes and followed along in each chapter. At about 1/3 of the way in, I felt I had a firm enough grasp to be able to implement it into my own project.

Coming from a relational (MySQL) background, the concept of a NoSQL DB was intriguing but took a bit of getting used to ("you don't have to design your schema up front?"). Storing and receiving data in a JSON-based format felt right at home after working with web frameworks and this book provides some great samples.

Aimed at experienced software developers, but good for MongoDB beginners and casual users, as well

This updated edition is aimed at software developers, but it doesn't ignore those of us who are more "casual" users of MongoDB. Indeed, this is an excellent book for newcomers to MongoDB, especially if you are patient and willing to read through an introductory chapter focusing on "MongoDB's history, design goals, and application use cases." Many people, of course, just want to jump straight into downloading software, running it, and playing with it for a while before getting down to serious stuff such as application use cases. So Appendix A is the place to go for getting MongoDB onto Linux, Mac, or Windows PCs. Then, once you have MongoDB installed, you can jump back to Chapter 2 to start learning how to use the JavaScript shell. After that, things start getting more "practical." For example, Chapter 3 introduces "Writing programs using MongoDB." Here, Ruby is used to work with the MongoDB API, but the author notes: "MongoDB, Inc. provides officially supported, Apache-licensed MongoDB drivers for all of the most popular programming languages. The driver examples in the book use Ruby, but the principles we’ll illustrate are universal and easily transferable to other drivers. Throughout the book we’ll illustrate most commands with the JavaScript shell, but examples of using MongoDB from within an application will be in Ruby."

I won't try to sum up everything in this well-written, 13-chapter book. I have used older, 2.X versions of MongoDB in MEAN stack applications. And, separately, I have worked a bit with Ruby and MongoDB. But in each case, I haven't needed to learn all that much about MongoDB itself, mainly just ensure that it is storing data that can be accessed in the right place and updated, saved or deleted as needed. So this book, written for 3.0.X (and later, as well as earlier) MongoDB releases is an eye-opener for me and one that I will keep around for reference and more learning now that I have upgraded to 3.2.

Part 1 of this 2nd edition "provides a broad, practical introduction to MongoDB." Part 2 offers "a deep exploration of MongoDB’s document data model." And Part 3 examines MongoDB "from the database administrator’s perspective. This means we’ll cover all the things you need to know about performance, deployments, fault tolerance, and scalability."

One cautionary note: The author points out that "as of MongoDB v3.0, 32-bit binaries will no longer be supported." Of course, some 3.X 32-bit binaries are still out there, and you can install them, but you will get a lot of warning messages from MongoDB. Download a 64-bit binary if your system will support it.

The author realizes that many readers who have some MongoDB experience will not read the book straight through but will jump around to chapters in many different orders and will even skip some chapters. And this is okay. MongoDB in Action: Second Editon is a book many of us will be happy to have handy whenever we need to get a better grip on some new aspect of working with this great open-source, document database.

A distasteful hero and rampant comma misuse

The Duke's Reform started out with what I assumed would be a typically formulaic historical romance. In the prologue, Alex, the widowed and heartbroken Duke of Rochester, vows that he will not marry again for love. He will marry to secure an heir, but by God, he absolutely will not fall in love. He runs into (literally) Isobel a few pages later. She's predictably feisty and mouthy, and they immediately feel sexual attraction as they verbally spar. Here we go, I thought. They will push and pull for 75% of the book, she will break down his walls, he will awaken her sexually, they will fall madly in love, they will be separated by some misunderstanding, and they will reconcile. The end. In hindsight, this might have been a better book.

Instead, the pair quickly marry after a brief courtship. When Isobel is not instantly impregnated, Alex turns to gambling and alcohol, and Isobel feels increasingly lonely.

On two separate occasions, his low-life friends attempt to sexually assault Isobel, and she fights back. Both times, Alex viciously accuses Isobel of tainting his good family name because she physically defended herself. After the second attempted assault, Alex tells Isobel, "Tonight, madam, you brought disgrace to my name...I am master in this house and it's high time you learnt what happens when you disobey me." He calls her a common trollop and locks her alone in a freezing room. When he finally releases her, she punches him. Alex then drags his wife to their bed and prepares to rape her, but of course, Isobel quickly succumbs to his "charms". She understandably flees the next day, and like magic, Alex instantly repents and becomes a changed man.

It seems like the author could not decide what to do with Isobel. Her initial spunk was replaced almost immediately by a simpering subservience and then continued to vacillate without reason. The Duke, meanwhile, is not exactly a sympathetic character.

I can appreciate the author's attempts to mix up the typical formula. But I cannot appreciate the constant misuse of commas. I had to continually pause and double back to attempt to discern the author's meaning, making an already slow read even slower. I was also put off by the awkwardness of the writing. I think the author went to great lengths to avoid anachronisms. While that's commendable, in this case, conversations just sounded silly. For instance, when Alex cuts himself on a wine glass, he tells Isobel, "I don't wish to mar the perfection of your outfit with my gore." She replies, "I should not care if you did. However, as I've no idea where your bandages are kept, I shall do as you ask."

I don't enjoy writing negative book reviews, but a distasteful lead male character and constant grammatical errors make this book impossible to recommend.

God's teeth! I beg your pardon!!!

God's teeth! How do I begin this review? Let's see . . .this book is about the poor Duke of Rochester, our hero Alexander. He lost his first wife and two daughters due to illness, and after much urging is on the hunt for another bride so he can get that all important heir. He's let himself fall into a pit of depression while blowing money on gambling and drinking. Alexander hangs out with some unsavory characters as well. However, a chance meeting with our heroine Isobel changes his life. They meet at a ball afterward, court quickly and marry at record speed. Not much courtship is shown, and I didn't really feel a connection initially.

Begging your pardon, but in the first few chapters of the book Alexander is often shown to be cold and uncaring. He becomes distant and acts disappointed when Isobel fails to conceive within the first few months of marriage. Isobel is shown to be a mousy individual without much backbone to speak up. One night Alexander is drunk and punishes Isobel for "ruining his name" at a party. I beg your pardon, but Isobel runs away the next day. This causes Alexander to reflect on his life to make changes. God's teeth! He promises to be a different man if he can just get his love back! He doesn't even blame her for running away, and he even takes all the blame for Isobel not getting pregnant upon himself as well.

After being in hiding for a while Isobel discovers she is pregnant after leaving Alexander. God's teeth! She decides to go back to the home they shared. Alexander is gone, and this gives Isobel time to establish a small army of servants who are loyal to her as she sets up house in the east wing of the home. Alexander accidentally discovers she is back and spends the rest of the book groveling in one form or another trying to win Isobel's love once again.

This is when the book sort of changes gears and starts veering into a mystery. God's teeth! There are a few villains causing trouble for the couple; murder, mayhem and distrust abound at this point. Isobel falls in and out of love with Alexander a half dozen times due to perceived slights. Alexander's personality is completely transformed, and he sort of becomes a wimp as he bows to each and every demand Isobel makes. God's teeth! It was really starting to get irritating.

Begging your pardon, but there is the happily ever after at the end of this book because that is the typical outcome of most romances. I don't begrudge the ending at all. However, I have to say, you could really get involved in a serious drinking game with the writing in this book. The two phrases I used as my review title are repeated over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. You get my drift right? I'm sure if I had bothered taking a shot for each time one of those phrases was used I would have been well wasted by the end. Even the author must have realized how ridiculous it was becoming because she had Isobel making fun of "I beg your pardon" once in the book.

I do beg your pardon, but God's teeth I couldn't bear to read this story again. I'm afraid it will be removed from my Kindle as it is not a keeper.

The Duke's Reform - Kindle version - where was the editor?

Spoiler alert: I hate to write a bad review so I will start out with the good. This was a good story. Could have been a much better story. It was poorly told, punctuation and vocabulary and missing words and words added in that did not relate to the sentence they were in combined to make this a very difficult read. When I read a story, I want to read what the author wanted to tell, I don't want to have to guess and fill in the story every other page.

There was a lot of room for emotions in this story but not much of it was developed. The Duke who was very nice at first, then became a jerk and then miraculously woke up and became a groveling good guy was actually my favorite character.

The h just wore me out with moving here and there, having clothes moved back and forth, changing her mind, she's in love, she's in lust, she's in hate. It got to the point where it was just tedious. Maybe she hurt herself jumping to conclusions about the Duke.

The Duke really was a big jerk during part of the book and the h was whiny. Okay, she was young and not very experienced but she went from being a simpering whiner to being an unhappy shrew. That transformation can happen but why? I would have liked to see her emotions and actually see her grow.

The sex scenes were very mild and pretty bland. Nothing hot here ladies.

The voices of the characters never really rang true. Some parts of the story did not go anywhere. For instance, after the baby is born, h takes her first horseback ride. Lots of anticipation and build up for this and sure enough, the high strung horse bolts. That's the end of that part of the story. Seriously, it is never mentioned again. Horse bolts and presumably she falls off. We never hear anymore about it.

One of the bad guys is just abandoned at the end of the story. We never find out if he was caught or if he lived happily ever after as a bad guy.

The story ended very abruptly. There was an implied HEA. But once again, the reader is left out.

This could have been a good read if only they had had an editor. The Kindle version has some serious formatting problems with new paragraphs beginning in the middle of sentences, some paragraphs in bold and other in italics for no apparent reason. Commas and other punctuation are just, willy nilly throughout the book. A stilted and unbelievable dialogue. I wanted to like both the H and the h. I really did.

I am left wondering why I read this book to the end except that, I really wanted to like the H and h and I wanted them to have an HEA.

But if you must, get a dictionary and keep it handy, you will need it. This is a long read and by the end I just wanted it to be over.

Lawrence O. Richards hold a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Michigan, a Th.M. in Christian education from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in religious education and social psychology from Garrett Biblical Seminary and Northwestern University jointly. Dr. Larry Richards has taught in the Wheaton College Graduate School, served as a church minister of Christian education, and taught courses at carious schools in the United States and overseas. He has developed Sunday school programs, conducted seminars and workshops, and Internet curriculums for Sunday school and home school. He has written over 200 books, including Christian education texts, theological works, Bible dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias, and commentaries; he has also written a number of devotional and enrichments books, as well as several specialty and study bibles. He and his wife, Sue, life in Hudson, Florida.

15 summaries of some good management books

This is a book of book summaries. Soundview is a company that creates and sells these summaries and there are many other companies that provide them. This book has 15 of these summaries. I have read and reviewed several of these books already and can vouch for them as very good books. However, the title of the sub-book is pure hyperbole. These are NOT the "best management books of all time". I can point to books by books by Drucker, Jack Welch, and others that are not included here. These may be the best books of the past few years, but even that is pretty subjective given the huge number of forests that get consumed in printing management books each and every year. However, using a subtitle something like "some pretty good books on management from the past couple of years" just doesn't have the same punch even if it is more accurate.

I have to say that the summaries of the books read well and are nicely organized. Of course, I recommend reading the actual books if you are interested in the topics.

Abbreviated but insightful and eloquent profiles

Created by Chris Lauer in collaboration with the editors of Soundview Executive Book Summaries, this is one of two volumes in which readers are provided with the core concepts and most important insights of some of the most influential authors of books on management. There is a companion volume, The Marketing Gurus, created by Chris Murray, also in collaboration with the editors of Soundview Executive Book Summaries. The purpose of both volumes is to accommodate the needs, interests, and (yes) time constraints of executives who have more resources available than they are able to explore, and thus require guidance when determining which books to read. As with all other anthologies, there will always be quibbles with inclusions and omissions. (What about Blanchard, Charan, Collins, Covey, Deming, Drucker, Jennings, Kaplan and Norton, McGregor, Porter, Schumpeter, Taylor, and Womack? OK, but then who to leave out to make room for one or more of them?) Lauer and his associates decided to focus on specific works most of which are recently published and each representative of the "guru" who wrote it. I have no quarrel with any of their selections.

Lauer and his collaborators are to be commended on their brilliant use of a standard format that consists of basic components: a brief introduction to the given author or authors (e.g. Marshall Goldsmith and Mark Reiter's What Got You Here Won't Get You There), a table of contents for a representative book, "The Summary in Brief" followed by "What You'll Learn in This Summary," and then "The Complete Summary." What amazes me, frankly, is how much coverage is provided in a series of 15 chapters, each devoted to one or a combination of business thinkers; also, having already read and reviewed most of the exemplary books, I can attest to the fact that there was no effort to "dumb down" the material. Moreover, the length of each commentary is significant. For example, 15 pages to John C. Maxwell (Winning with People), 16 pages to Bill George with Peter Sims (True North), 17 pages to Bo Burlingham (Small Giants), and 18 pages to Kenichi Ohmae (The Next Global Stage). Obviously, these commentaries are necessarily incomplete but they are certainly not "thumb nails." There is more than enough information to help a busy executive to decide whether or not to seek additional sources, several of which are identified in the brief introductions.

At first glance, some readers may question the inclusion of certain "gurus" (e.g. Bradford Smart, Charles Handy, Bo Burlingham, and Ian Mitroff with Gus Agnos), especially if they ask "What about Jim Collins and Peter Drucker?" Granted, some of the business thinkers are much more familiar than are others. The fact remains that all of the "others" deserve far more attention than they seem to have received thus far. Also, my guess (only a guess) is that if all of those discussed in this book were asked for their own opinions of Smart, Handy et al, they would eagerly acknowledge the significance of their contributions to the business world in general and to executive education in particular.

Please allow me now a personal digression to share two separate, unrelated experiences. Years ago while at work on a graduate degree in comparative literature, I decided to write a research paper on the major works of Joseph Conrad. I had read and re-read them and was convinced that I understood and appreciated his talent as a storyteller, his mastery of imagery and symbolism, his insights into human nature, etc. My problem was, I could not summon the writing skills to express my thoughts with a style that would be worthy of a Polish �migr� for whom English was a second language! Later, when teaching English and coaching football at a boarding school in New England, I attended a clinic and was asked to introduce Vince Lombardi at a luncheon. I was familiar with his achievements but feared that my remarks would be obvious and, worse yet, banal. I mention these two experiences to suggest how difficult it must have been for Chris Lauer and his collaborators to do full justice to the business thinkers and their significance in this volume. They succeed brilliantly.

Had me from the start....

I got this book for free after seeing it on the Kindle Buffett list. I did not know the author and just thought that the book would interest me. Marja Fluudjinicki a/k/a MaryAnn Flood is a Polish teenage girl who is hypersexualized at an early age (albeit not sexually active per se) by men. Marja has learned that she has power over men through her body and use of feminine wiles and every time someone described her it made me think of Jessica Rabbit ("I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way...") Marja is insightful, wise and honest so she has qualities that also endear her to the men who see her body before they "see" her. Marja is pursued by a rich kid (Ross Drego) who is obsessed with her mainly because she is an enigma to him and he really wants to control and possess her (as he does all things). At the same time, Marja is actually in love with Ross' friend (Mike Keyes - rhymes with eyes) but either fails to believe she deserves his love or wants to avoid being hurt when his love disappoints her. The story is set in the 40's, 50's and 60's.

Ross aspires to be a mover and shaker in the crime syndicate while Mike is a good guy studying to be a police officer and always does the right thing. Marja, Ross and Mike move in an out of each other's lives and the story starts with Mike, an Assistant District Attorney in the present being forced to prosecute his lost love Marja for Prostitution, Bribery and other crimes committed while she acts as a madam (fronting as a model agency) for the crime syndicate. In the beginning Mike is reciting Marja's contacts with the criminal justice system as a backdrop to turn the jury against her, however the story later unfolds from the perspective of the past that led her to court and you get the background for each of those contacts listed in Court; although the story is told in a way that you only recognize after the fact that you have context for her past as described by the D.A. This book is a lost love/lost opportunity story for Mike and Marja but also a commentary about what life events could lead a presumably good girl to a life where she becomes a professional prostitute.

Not very good

This book was originally published in 1955. Not being super-familiar with the popular literature of the 1950s, I'm not sure how this stacks up, but I'll tell you this: this is no The End Of The Affair, it's not even Peyton Place.

It's the story of a young woman in New York who is robbed of her virtue (in true retro style, once she's raped her attitude is "Why bother?") and is thus, alas, unable to love the man who loves her. Despite the fact that she lacks any abilities beyond beauty, blonde hair, and a certain hardscabble "Never say die" attitude, he improbably moons over her for decades. Various high drama events propel the plot along (a love affair with a rich drunk, fistfights with mobsters, etc) until the virtuous DA who never stopped loving her winds up prosecuting her after she's arrested for running a major prostitution ring.

It's a fairly easy read, but there's nothing here. The scenes that were probably exciting for previous generations fall flat today and the characterization is beyond flat. Mary Ann (she goes by several names in the story, I'm just going with the last one) doesn't come across as a consistent character, she's just a blonde mannequin moving through the plot.

Unless you're reading this for the nostalgia factor, I recommend skipping.

Great characters, plot, and book

I really enjoyed this book. It's a story about how a girl coming from nothing but wanting everything ends up getting involved with the wrong people/mob. She starts out with strict morals, but as life continues to give her unfortunate circumstances, she is forced to make decisions that lead her away from the one person who has created happiness for her. Years later, that man is the one to prosecute her on her criminal involvement in the mob. I think the book ended the exact way it should have - realistic and true to the characters. Only gave it 4 stars because it was a little slow in the beginning and had trouble getting past the first couple chapters. After that things picked up and I couldn't wait to see what happened. Definitely will recommend to others.
