"Living And Dying Are, In A Sense, Of Equal Value"

Murakami has a particular expertise in describing people's feelings, perceptions and needs. This book is no exception. In a series of 6 short stories, Murakami presents a panoply of effects resulting from the earthquake in Kobe, Japan. None of the stories concentrate on the actual earthquake itself. Rather, the stories concentrate on the effects on the people who were not in Kobe, but who suffered, primarily emotionally, as a result of that disaster.

In America, there is a similarity between the Kobe earthquake and the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. In both the Kobe quake and the 9/11 incident, people who were not directly affected were in fact shell-shocked by the occurrence. In this book, Murakami shows us that the effect is universal. His characters were all affected by the disaster, even though they were not in it.

The book concentrates on the psychological musings on life of Japanese people with augmentation regarding the manner in which the earthquake left a mark on their psyche. Yet the concentration is more on the day to day life decisions that the characters make, and why.

Two of Murakami's stories are allegorical. In the story, "Super-Frog Saves Tokyo" the author tells a tale about a giant frog that teams up with one person to save Tokyo from the attack of the devastating "worm." The frog indicates that what he needs is the man's support and belief. The frog does all the fighting, but without others with true belief, the frog knows he cannot win.

The depth of understanding of internal psychological musings is explicitly expressed by Murakami. His character development is his forte. His writing style is highly understandable, yet brilliantly structured. The book is recommended for all lovers of supreme contemporary literature.

Haunting ... enchanting ...

Two people look at the night sky. One sees darkness and dots of light. Another sees a thousand marvels.
As the shock of an earthquake wears off, a sort of soul-quake takes place. After all, if we can't rely on the ground under our feet to remain solid, what can we be certain of? Sometimes we KNOW that in the brain, but it takes an earthquake or terrorist attack for us to FEEL it in the gut -- for the knowing to be meaningful.
Something intangible but essential shakes loose in the people of Japan weeks after the Kobe earthquake. Like the rock mantle that once covered Kobe, neglected souls have liquefied. Now change is possible. For some, that means healing. For one, it means, not just losing, but unknowingly giving away his...soul(?). Another meets a heretofore hidden aspect of his Self. I guess it depends on what had been important in their lives and where they were headed before.
The stories are told gently, subtly and with respect. A writer's self-inflicted chains are broken and he finds his freedom. A dumpy, overly modest, milquetoast doormat of a man finds his true power. With the help of a guru/limo driver, a rock of hatred that even the soul-quake left intact is only now able to be recognized and dealt with.
I wouldn't presume to discuss Mr. Murakami's use of metaphor and allegory. I think each reader will find what s/he needs to find. ("When the student is ready....") That's one reason I'll be reading this book again soon: There's much to be found.
AFTER THE QUAKE, I suggest, is best read slowly and often, with soft and open awareness; it's to be contemplated upon.

Another great one!

If you have not picked up any of Murakami's work, you should try his books as soon as you can. This was the second book of his that I read, the first being Sputnick Sweetheart and it was fantastic.

This is a collection of short stories that all deal with the earthquake in Kobe indirectly. It shows how a great tragedy can affect an entire country, even if the character knew no one in the effected area. Whether it is a young child who is scared of the Earthquake Man or a teenager questioning morality and purpose, everyone is impacted by the catastrophic event. There are also fantastical events, most noticeably a man who gets visited by a giant frog who needs his help to defeat Worm so that Worm will not cause an earthquake in Tokyo.

What stuck with me the most is how much I cared about the characters even though I was just shown a small part of their lives. I finished the story wanting to know more about what happened to them. Did the young man ever find his father or his purpose? Did she wake up after the bonfire and kill herself or did she realize all the good things in her life? Did they live happily ever after when they finally got together or did life happen and it was more difficult than they thought? By not giving a conclusion, Murakami made me try to decide for myself what I thought what would happen to the people. Since he showed real life in his stories, I saw that they did not all end up happy, that maybe she did kill herself or he never figured out what he was doing. The stories did show some hope though, so maybe they ended up okay. In these quick twenty page stories Murakami manages to show a slice of what life is really like and all of its complexities.

Her writing has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and online publications, including Ms., Penthouse, and Skeptical Inquirer, as well as several anthologies, including Best American Erotica 2003 and 2005. So-so start to a potentially good series

Editor Greta Christina says in the Introduction to her Best Erotic Comics 2008 that she used two criteria in her selection process: she wanted comics with "serious literary/artistic merit" and comics that were "hot." Both of these were necessary conditions. A comic that had one but not the other didn't make the cut.

Fair enough. But these criteria for determining what's "erotic" are boggy, even allowing for the fact that "erotic" is notoriously hard (and probably impossible) to define tightly. "Hot," of course, is unabashedly subjective. "Serious literary/artistic merit" is less so, but Christina says nothing to explain what she means by the standard except that it connotes "thoughtful, insightful, engaging, funny, poignant, political, and/or exceptionally well-drawn." Not much help there.

I bring this up because it seems to me that the comics included in this volume--which Christina claims is the first in a series--are seriously mixed in quality. Part of what's going on is undoubtedly a matter of taste: Christina's aesthetic and erotic tastes don't match up perfectly with mine. But part of it is the needless ambiguity of the standards she claims to have used in putting the volume together. Perhaps a more thoughtful discussion of what she means by "erotic" would've helped her be less scatter-gunned in her selections and more consistent in choosing high quality ones.

Ellen Forney's cover as well as her "Handy Map to Erogenous Zones" and "After House"; Colleen Coover's playful "A Bondage Tale"; Vince Coleman's "Flying to New Heights"; and Dori Seda's "F--- Story" are perfect examples of what this book could've contained: teasingly sexy, funny, playful, unconventional, tender, well-executed. Equally good but more serious selections include Quinn's "The Eternal Idol"; John Cuneo's "The Best Field Trip Ever"; and Daphne Gottlieb and Diane DiMassa's "Jokes and the Unconscious."

But why Trina Robbins' "Pets," which depicts sex and nudity but clearly isn't intended to be erotic in any sense of the word? Why "Talk Show Queers," which is too long and succeeds in making what should've been hot sex yawningly tedious? Why the sadistic selections from Toshio Saeki--beautifully drawn, granted, but erotic only to folks who get off on torture and mutilation? And what "serious literary/artistic merit" could one possibly claim for Phoebe Gloeckner's "An Evening in Prague," Gilbert Hernandez's "You're an Artist," Susannah Breslin's "My, My American Bukkake," or Ralf Konig's "Sniffing Around" (which at least has the merit of being funny)? For that matter, how are any of these selections "hot" in any reasonable sense of the word?

Why no Alison Bechdel? No trans-comics? And why the inclusion of pre-2008 erotic comics in a volume that announces itself as collecting the best of 2008? (Christina provides an unconvincing rationale in the Introduction.)

Here's a free piece of advice for Last Gasp Publishers. Don't rely on a single editor to put together future volumes in this series. Doing so almost inevitably means publishing volumes that really wind up being "Best Erotic Comics according to the Editor." Invite the leading erotic comic artists to jointly edit future volumes. It can only be an improvement.

A Sensual Trip Into the Wide World of Sex Comics

This first in the annual series shows comics that aren't just designed to turn you on (though some of them surely will), but also tell humorous, honest stories about a range of sexualities, using various artistic styles that show readers just how many ways one can interpret sex. The sex here isn't sanitized or trying to necessarily show any typical idea of "hot sex." In other words, while it's sexy, it's not necessarily something you're going to open and immediately start jerking off to (though you very well might as you go through the book).

There's kinky sex, lesbian sex, dogs talking about their owners (or rather, "the man with the can opener") having sex. Erika Moen's tribute to her silver bullet vibrator, and its ability to give her her first orgasm, when she feared she was lagging behind her peers, is one that many women will be able to relate to. There's everything from cock and ball torture to a man going down on himself to Susannah Breslin's journalistic take on bukkake, where she interviews and examines the motives of the participants, male and female, with an open-minded, curious tone. Some, like "Talk Show Queers," don't need dialogue to get their point across, while others rely more heavily on textual storytelling in addition to the visuals.

Ellen Forney's artwork is a favorite of mine as well, from her eye-catching cover art to her diagram of the human body's erogenous zones to "After Hours." Seasoned sex writer Greta Christina is out to provoke discussion, identification, lust, and much more with this collection. Thankfully, it's so much more than just naked bodies, but gets at the ways we think, talk, and feel about sex. She's included some classics as well as newer work. I appreciated the variety of styles included here, and as a relative newcomer to the world of comics, plan to check out work by some of the artists that are new to me. And, perhaps best of all, is that the series is taking submissions for the 2009 edition, if this one inspires you to submit something of your own (or something you've seen that's particularly hot).

I could draw better then this?

I could draw better then this? Now granted I am in art school and I do draw comics in my spare time but holy cow some of the drawings in here were just awful?
I understand that its erotica, that the point of these stories is to get to the erotic part, plot and dialog be damned. But some of the stories are lacking in the most simple of literary basics.
Some are difficult to understand whats going on, the expressions are off or understated, the details (where you really want details) are skipped or butchered.
There are a couple of good comics in here to pull this collection back from a 0 star rating, but over I was disappointed when I bought it.
I can't believe my first review of a book is on erotica.

A Must Read for Single Men in the Big Apple

Ah, New York. What comes to mind when you think of this metropolis? The Big Apple. Yankees. Wall Street. Broadway. Times Square. Ellis Island. Crazy homeless people. Hot dog stands. It’s really hard to pin this city down—perhaps that’s what makes it so alluring.

Although I’ve only been to a NYC a handful of times, and had no intention of going their in the near future (until reading this book), I bought a copy of the book for a couple reasons. One, Mark Z. always puts out entertaining writing. If you haven’t read his memoirs from traveling, do it now! Although, this is just a city guide I knew it would be entertaining.

Two, part of the purpose of this website is to read books for other guys and see if they are good enough to recommend. Seeing as New York is the USA’s biggest city, there’s bound to be some guys who are living there and travel there frequently who could use this guide.

Three, I spent the weekend at a seminar on politics. The weekend was filled with intellectual lectures and discussions. I didn’t want to read any philosophy or history in my free time—something along the lines of ‘sex, drugs and rock n’ roll’, and this fit the bill.

Travel Guides for Men

Writing guide books on places for guys specifically looking to get laid is a pretty niche market. Off the type of my head, Roosh seems to have corned the market with his ‘Bang [Country]’ series.

As far as American cities go, great information for how to get laid (and not with a prostitute) is on Roosh’s Forums. If you’re not familiar with the lingo, they’re known as ‘Datasheets’ (Here’s an example for NYC).

These datasheets provide a brief overview of a specific city, and break down how a man can bet get laid. Reading Naughty Nomad’s (NN) guide to New York, this seemed to be the way he was going, but on a much larger scale. However, once he got into the specific neighborhoods, he took it to the next level. He had detailed descriptions of a dozen or so bars for each area and then provided a map with the location for each of these bars within their respective neighborhoods. Additionally, he provides demographic data for each neighborhood. The book was much more than a datasheet—it’s like a Lonely Planet guide, but for guys who actually get laid.

Welcome to the Big Apple

With a city of 8 million people, and a metro population of many millions more, New York City has plenty to offer—including the women. So whether it’s for a short weekend of debauchery or years of work, New York will attract men looking to meet as many of the thousands and thousands of cute ladies as they can.

But with this massive size there’s a dilemma:

…Don’t get your hopes up too high. The Big Apple is not something you chow down in a weekend.

To really have a full grasp of what it takes to get laid in NYC a weekend won’t cut it. This guide will certainly help though.

The first step is understanding your opponents. Compared to most cities, men in New York are more assertive and aggressive when it comes to picking up women. I can think of few cities where men exhibit such little approach anxiety.

Competition is certainly very real in NYC, but reassuringly having a semblance of game will take you far.

The Ladies

NYC has an eclectic mix of people to say the least. In terms of women there are an amazing mix of immigrants, models, JAP’s and more. Mark Z. has you covered with a section breaking down the different types of girls in NYC.

Want to hit on cute, snobby college chicks? It’s in there.

Grind up on a big, black booty? He’s got you covered.

Salsa dance the night away with feisty Latinas? Check.

Hobnob with stunning models in posh nightclubs? You bet your ass.

Do some blow off a stripper in the backseat of a limo? Well… there are only certain things the Naughty Nomad can do, but hey I’m sure you might have some luck with that too.

These girls all fill a niche within their own neighborhoods. This is an important factor to keep in mind as NN suggests that you ‘hunt locally’. This means that it’s in your best interest, logistically speaking, to pickup chicks around where you live. So, if you are especially enamored with a certain type of chick, make sure to consult the guide about where to stay, whether short-term or long-term.

Drugs

Another welcomed section (at least to some) is on drugs. Although I’m a straight edge, non-drug user, I have seen the power of using drugs to get laid. In college I often saw guys pull just buy offering to leave the bar and go smoke some weed.

This is a tactic NN recommends. Cocaine is a substitute here, especially for hotter chicks.

He breaks down getting laid with drugs, types of popular drugs in NYC, the risks of getting caught/jail time, and even where to buy it! I’m not going to advocate drug use for a few reasons on this website, but I don’t judge. If that’s your thing, embrace it and use it to your advantage—anything helps in NYC.

Suggestions

I would have suggested a conclusion at the end of the book. It kind of just drops off after the last venue recommendation. I realize it’s not a novel or memoir, but a general overview would have been nice to wrap everything up, although there is one towards the beginning.

Also, to be a nitpicky dick, the city ‘Bishkek, Uzbekistan’ is mentioned. Bishkek is actually the capital of Kyrgyzstan—Tashkent is Uzbekistan’s capital. Yes, I know I’m a stickler, but the only reason I bring that up is because I’ve actually been to Tashkent and feel compelled to shed light on it.

If you’re a red-blooded man who wants to get laid in NYC, or simply have a good time, this guide is indispensable with 140 pages of solid information. From a financial perspective, this guide will point you in the right direction in terms of accommodations. So by spending a few bucks on this book you’ll save a lot more money on where you live, whether it’s a short term stay or signing a long-term lease.

The guide to all the different venues is pretty impressive. From reading Mark Zolo’s prior work, and with the amount of debauchery and crazy situations he gets himself in, to see him put together a detailed guide like this is well… impressive.

The amount of research that went into this also deserves recognition. While this “research” consisted of going out partying, drinking, and getting laid, still—it takes time, effort and a whole lot of cash. As far as I know no other guy has done this, and therefore Mark has done mankind a great service.

After reading this book, you’ll probably want to take a trip to NYC. In fact, I may be going there in the coming months. I’ll be sure to bring my Kindle so I can read this book again.

There's one thing you can also count on from Mr. Zolo: honesty. I've lived in Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem, and The Bronx; even I was surprised how many new places have opened during my time in New York. This book made me laugh several times. I recommend it to any man in his 20's who visits NYC.

Amazing as a guide on NYC. I recommend it to everybody travelling to NYC for a parting. But; as just a reading - i.e. without any practical reasons - the book is not so interesting as Naughty Nomad's first book - Not Your Typical Backpacker Story.

About the Author
Bernt S. Aadnoy is a Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Stavanger in Norway. He started in the oil industry as a trainee for Phillips Petroleum in Odessa, Texas in 1978.� He later worked� for Phillips Ekofisk operations in Norway.� In 1980 he started working for Rogaland Research where he mainly built a full scale offshore drilling rig for research purposes. This facility called Ullrigg still carries out research both in well technology and in rig automation.� Dr. Aadnoy worked for Statoil and Saga Petroleum and�entered his present position in 1994.� He developed the common Well Design Manual for the Norwegian oil companies, which also led to the book Modern Well design in 1996. He has�performed consultancy work for many oil companies, including being an advisor for the Petroleum Safety Authority. In the period 1998-2003 he was adjunct Professor at the University of the Faroe Islands where he built a petroleum engineering program aimed at the coming deep water exploration activities.� In 2009 he was a visiting Professor at the University of Calgary. Professor Aadnoy holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Stavanger Tech, a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wyoming, a MS degree in Control�Engineering from the University of Texas and a PhD in Petroleum Rock Mechanics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology.� He has authored more than 120 publications mostly within drilling and rock mechanics but also within reservoir engineering and production.� In addition to Modern Well Design he has also authored�Mechanics of Drilling�and�will soon publish Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics.� He was chief editor for the new SPE book: Advanced Drilling and Well Technology in 2009. Aadnoy� has received numerous awards over the years, amongst them he was the 1999 recipient of the SPE International Drilling Engineering Award.

Great book from an exceptional Dr.

I read this book and learned quite a bit. After being turned away by other endocrinologists who said they couldn't help me, I went to the author for treatment who was able to help me immensely. Dr. Friedman is brilliant. I highly recommend reading this book to anyone who has any thyroid problems who would like to understand their condition better and wants tips on how to overcome them.

Covers it all A-Z

I find this book to be a great tool to dealing with thyroid issues. Dr Friedman makes it easy to use as a reference and also explains things clearly. The book also touches on other endocrine and autoimmune disorders which is more than helpful. I will refer to it over and over. My fear is I will loan it out and it won't come back to me!
