The musical, which has more than fulfilled its promise as one of the most popular English musicals of all time, remains one of the country's most significant shows.

Author Marc Napolitano shows how Oliver!'s popularity has ultimately exerted a significant influence on two separate cultural trends. Firstly, Bart's adaptation forever impacted the culture text of Dickens's Oliver Twist; to this day, the general perception of the story and the innumerable allusions to the novel in popular media are colored heavily by the sights, scenes, sounds, and songs from the musical, and virtually every major adaptation of from the 1970s on has responded to Bart's work in some way. It's A Fine, Fine Book!

With OLIVER! A DICKENSIAN MUSICAL, Marc Napolitano has made a wonderful contribution to the study and history of musical theater. His thoroughly researched and intelligent observations give us tremendous insight into Lionel Bart's groundbreaking musical version of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist." By the time we reach the last page of Napolitano's book, we understand just exactly why OLIVER! is a great show and a cultural phenomenon. More importantly, we discover how Bart, through this show, brought significant changes to the musical form. A fan of the show since childhood, Napolitano understands fully why it touches such a chord deep inside us in such a delightful way, fifty-five years after its debut in England. Among other things, Bart's masterpiece --- and indeed "masterpiece" almost seems like an understatement - paved the way for later English musical transplants to America.

But first things first. Napolitano starts by doing an exhaustive -- but not exhausting --- comparison of the various stage and screen adaptations of Dickens' novel that came before Bart decided to turn it into a musical. This by itself is terrific background for what is yet to come. He informs us of the cultural context of both the book and these adaptations. Then he brings Bart into the picture.

Born into extreme poverty in the East End of London during the Great Depression, Bart was hardly a likely candidate for musical theater immortality. He could not play a musical instrument nor could he read or write notes. (Actually this is not all that unusual among our great writers of musicals; many of them were also musically untrained.) Yet he was a cockney and a Jew, two parts of his heritage he brought into OLIVER!, particularly in the music. Gradually he moved into the English theater of the mid 1950's. His method, also used by many of our great musical writers, was to sing or whistle his tunes into a tape recorder, for a more trained arranger to transcribe into readable musical notes.

At the same time that he was moving into the theater, Bart met up with a young, former merchant marine, named Tommy Steele, who had also been born into poverty. Within a year, Steele and Bart had taken the English pop music world by storm. Steele became the English Elvis Presley, whose biggest hit songs were either written or co-written by Bart.

It was for Steele that Bart first conceived the idea of turning "Oliver Twist" into a musical. But soon Bart realized that there was really no part in the show for Steele. Nevertheless he persevered. He was turned down by almost every producer in London. The producers believed the material was too depressing for audiences. Finally, however, he got his chance.

But world wide success came with a lot of blood, sweat and tears for Bart. There were arguments with producers, difficulties with Ron Moody over his performance as Fagin in the original British production, claims by others that they helped in the writing of the show and therefore deserved credit and royalties, and many other challenges, all of which Napolitano describes in great detail. Napolitano also analyzes the film version ( of which he is particularly fond), which was another frustration for Bart. Finally he provides the sad account of how Bart lost his copyrights --- and millions and millions of dollars/pounds -- to the show.

This book is crammed with so much fascinating material, not simply about OLIVER! and Lionel Bart, but also the state of musical theater at the time of the show, both in England and on Broadway. I had to read the book twice in order to take it all in. But I learned so much.

As a bonus, the publisher, Oxford University Press, has thoughtfully and generously created an online companion resource to the book presented in the form of five appendices containing additional material.

Whether you're a casual member of the audience, a musical theater buff, or a serious theater professional, this book should be mandatory reading. I can't recommend it enough.

About the Author

Stephen Prata taught astronomy, physics, and computer science at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California. Good info but falling to pieces

The book is very good but I am incredibly annoyed that it is falling to pieces! I think I got a faulty book - I've only had it for three weeks and I've never had a book do this before! Not sure if I can get a replacement or who I contact, if I can I will update this review.

Excellent book

This book is a must have for anyone interested in C programming. Prata is very thorough in his explanations (hence why the book is so big) and goes out of his way to make sure a concept is understood. There are review questions after each chapter and the answers are located at the back of the book. Although this book is aimed at beginners, absolute beginners may have a little trouble at first.

As a word of advice, do the review questions and programs. It will help you understand the topics presented in this book. Imagining yourself doing them doesn't count, open a notepad program and actually write your answers/code.

Kindle Readers Beware

The Kindle edition of this book all but guarantees a very frustrating learning experience. Many lines of text have words with character spacings that are nonsensically ultra-wide and nearly unreadable. Some characters such as bullet points are not displayed correctly and code examples are more often than not just collections of jumbled text. I encounter similar viewing problems using both the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle PC Reader platforms. I am very disappointed with the surprisingly low level of quality control from the publisher.

Excellent intro. to reading rhythms

I've taught percussion now for about 15 years, and this book teaches all the important rhythmic concepts within about 11 pages. It will definitely give a beginning student a sense of accomplishment, and will keep them interested, which is the most important thing! It also has a list of all 26 major rudiments and has plenty of useful exercises.

Great beginner book for the aspiring drummer

When I first learned the drumset, this is the book my teacher made me buy. It is written by Roy Burns (the head guy at Aquarian.) Lets face it, when you want to learn the drums, what could be more boring than learning on a practice pad or a snare drum. You just have to tell yourself that to become a good drummer, you need to work hard and master the basics. This book covers the basics and will help you master them.

This book explains note values, it has all the rudiments, it teaches various time signatures, it covers syncopation, and it is fun to play. There are some books out there that are so dry and boring that they might actually make you not want to learn or might just confuse you. This book is the opposite. I like how it introduces each new step gradually. Everything seems to flow in this book from beginning to end.

Sometimes just for fun, I play through the whole book in under an hour just for practice.

If this is your first drum book, then just buy this, a pair of sticks, a practice pad, AND A METRONOME.

The drummer is the timekeeper and not only do you need to know how to play the stuff in this book, you need to know how to play it in time. So make sure you are playing with a metronome.

I highly recommend this book. While working on this book, make sure you play Ted Reed's Syncopation as well as Realistic Rock by Carmine Appice. These three books helped me out and I think they will help you out.

Well written

Even though the graphics in the beginning leave something to be desired and could easily be updated, this is my favorite beginning drum book. For one thing, it contains the 'rudiments,' which I find an important part of the learning process. The rhythmic concepts and technical aspects (flams, drags, etc) are introduced in a logical order that the student can easily grasp.

About the Author

Michael L. Scott is a professor and past Chair of the Computer Science Department at the University of Rochester. A Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE, he shared the 2006 Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing. In 2001 he received the University's Robert and Pamela Goergen Award for Distinguished Achievement and Artistry in Undergraduate Teaching.

Great material for courses on Programming languages and Compilers

great book if you are taking courses on programming language and compilers courses. I bought this book for my course because it was recommended by my Professor, but I will be keeping it even after the completion of the course. I got the ebook version. Too good!

UPDATED 3/2011: I had originally posted the review below, complaining that the Kindle version of Programming Language Pragmatics was a rip-off, because (1) you didn't get the CD that accompanies the print version, and (2) that missing CD includes large portions of the book. In March 2011, the publisher posted a responsive comment providing a link to an on-line copy of the material on the CD. Currently, the url is [...] . Given that the missing parts of the book are now available even if one buys the Kindle version, my original complaints about the book are no longer valid. I've kept the original review below just for context, but please note that I now have only good things to say about the book, which is worth reading in its entirety.

ORIGINAL REVIEW from 12/2010 (NOW SUPERSEDED - see above): Michael L. Scott's Programming Language Pragmatics is an excellent book about programming languages, language design, and compilers. Unfortunately, the Kindle edition simply omits large portions of the book. It's a rip-off. If you want the complete book, stick with the print edition. Here's the problem. Starting with the second edition, and continuing with the third edition, parts of the print edition were moved to a companion CD - for example, parts of chapters 2, 3, and 4, and all of chapter 5, are on the companion CD that accompanies the print edition - in order to keep the print edition from being too thick. Unfortunately, in the Kindle edition, they have neither integrated the companion CD into the text, nor provided you with the CD (or its contents) - you simply don't get those portions of the book at all. This is a rip-off - you are paying just as much for the Kindle edition as you would for the print edition, but not getting the entire book. I was looking forward to reading this on my Kindle, having read prior editions in hardcopy, but once I realized that I didn't get the entire book, I had Amazon refund my money and ordered the print edition.

Programming Language Pragmatics 2nd ed review

If you don’t know how programming languages work, I would say this is your book. It contains plenty of examples in different languages. It explains the trade-offs and internals in a very accessible language. The way to explain the different compiler stages and features is very natural. If you are looking for a concrete topic it is in the book.

On the other hand, the book contains complementary stuff in a CD. Along the book some topics are covered in digital content only. One extreme case is the last chapter “Code Improvement”, it is digital entirely. It would be great if all chapters had a minimal ‘core’ of content. By the way, the bibliography would be more useful in digital format only.
