Adult level in best tradition of Dorling Kindersley

ISBN 1465422293 (Train: The Definitive Visual History, 1st ed.) is written and published in the best tradition of Dorling Kindersley's books on the adult level, like visual dictionaries, atlases, the human body, animals, activities, and Eyewitness Travel Guides. The Train is not different, as being profusely illustrated, well written, and beautifully bound. Some illustrations are gigantic - covering entire page or two - and they are excellent. This book does not have much of competition.
Typically for the Smithsonian series, every single period (step) is presented sequentially and pictorially, illustrating each technological development, from the locomotives, coaches, and cabin cars to exterior details, cab and car interiors, rails, and supporting structures incl. stations and bridges. The simple, clear, friendly style of the presentation ensures even complex machineries are easy to be visualized in their work environment, and their function - understood.
The Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function is unavailable yet and no pages are shown. What could not be seen is that the book is well printed on excellent paper, and hard-bound incl. a nice dust jacket. The covers are strong and flexibly jointed.

gorgeous book

This is a gorgeous book with lots of photos and drawings and tons and tons of information. It might be an overkill for a train-loving child, but it is a treasure trove of information, with details like wheel arrangement, boiler pressure, drive wheel diameter and top speed. I really liked the collages of close-up photos with names and explanation about many details of exterior and interior of a given train. At the end, there is a section on how railroads work.

Everything you need to know about trains!

I have always been fascinated with trains. This large, wonderful book has so much information and fantastic illustrations. The price is worth it for the glossy photos alone! It covers the early history and the key players, with photos of the invention in its infancy. These were inventions I had never seen before and had no idea they were the beginnings of the huge locomotives that came later. I'd read into some of the early innovations and history of the American trains and railroads, but had not read anything yet about the British history regarding trains. These iron monsters tore apart terrain, but also helped build nations. There were so many things I didn't know about the people promoting them, the specific railways and trains, etc. This is the perfect gift for that train collector or historian who does not yet have a railroad history in his library. This book covers everything. One chapter delves into the specifics of the wheel arrangements, cylinders, boiler pressure, etc. It goes over the cab interiors and other parts that help you dissect the engineering and better understand how the trains worked, as well as how in was improved over time. I do believe this book has everything you need to know about trains!
