Thoughtful historical overview and polemical defense of classical rhetoric

The author discusses the history of classical rhetoric from ancient to modern times, and uses that discussion to present a vigorous defense of rhetoric from its many critics and detractors. The author provides a scholarly, erudite discussion of rhetoric and its critics that gives readers a very good perspective on the issues involved, and the main lines of intellectual attack and defense. The author’s strong, polemical defense of classical rhetoric against its critics and detractors is thoughtful, informative, and worthy of serious consideration.
Written in a scholarly style, the book is aimed at readers who have knowledge and experience with intellectual history, and the history of classical rhetoric and Western philosophy. It is too technical for readers interested only in an introduction to classical rhetoric or its history.
My two disappointments with the book were: (1) the author’s failure to offer English language translations of some passages that quoted works written in French, German, and Italian; and (2) the author’s detailed discussion of only three modern novels in chapter 8 (“Rhetoric in the modern novel”). Although those two disappointments led me to refrain from giving the book 5 stars, they are not serious enough to prevent me from strongly recommending this book to readers who have a serious or scholarly interest in classical rhetoric.
